Is the North Node — Rahu, in a centuries-old Sanskrit text called the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra — a bad placement? No. The book gives Rahu a smoky, fearsome portrait, and then, reading the years Rahu rules in an actual chart, asks where Rahu stands and in what company; for a well-placed Rahu it reads honor, comfort and a happy home. If you came here knowing the North Node as the direction your life is growing toward, expect something different in kind, not just in name.
The North Node you know, and the Rahu this text describes
In the chart you are used to, the nodes are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's — the North Node ahead of you, the South behind, one pulling you toward what you have not learned yet.
This text is not doing that. Rahu here is a graha, counted among the planets and given the same treatment as the rest: a sign where it is strong, houses where it does well, company that helps or hurts, and a stretch of years of its own. There is no verse in this book about a soul's destination. What there is instead is a set of tests you can run on a chart, which is more modest and more checkable.
It begins with a picture of rank. The planets are arranged like a royal court around the Sun, where Saturn is the servant and Rahu and Ketu are the army3.4. Think what an army is to a kingdom. Not the king's enemy — it lives at the edge of things, goes where it is sent, and is feared because it is strong. Pointed outward under good command it protects everything inside the walls; left without command it can turn on the house it was meant to guard. That is a fair way to hold Rahu before reading a single verse about its results: force that depends on who directs it.
Why Rahu has a fearsome name here
The text does not make Rahu pretty. It gives him a smoky form and a dark-blue body; he lives as though in the forest, he is fearsome, and in the same breath he is called intelligent3.19. His things are a patchwork garment — the many-colored cloth stitched from pieces — and the metal lead, and the text calls him lord of serpents3.31.
Smoke, forest, serpents, patchwork. Everything about him sits outside the tidy center of life: the person who works far from home, the trade nobody in the family has done before, the life assembled from pieces rather than handed down whole. Today that can look like a career abroad, a new field, a gamble that pays or one that does not.
If you have met the story of a severed head that swallows the Sun, note that it is not in these verses; the portrait above is what this book itself gives. So the reputation is partly earned — Rahu is the outsider in the court. But an outsider is not a curse, and the book never stops at the description.
Which Rahu placement is best, by this text's own tests
Before it says anything about results, the chapter on each planet's years gives Rahu a dignity, exactly as it does every planet. Taurus is named as Rahu's sign of exaltation, and Scorpio as Ketu's36.29. Virgo is named as Rahu's own house, and in the years of a node standing in its own house the text reads much happiness and plenty of grain36.30.
That alone answers the question in the title. A planet the text reads as giving happiness in its own sign is not bad by nature; it is a planet whose result depends on where it stands, like every other planet in the book.
For houses it is generous. Rahu in an angle (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th), a trine (the 5th or 9th), the 11th or the 3rd, in a kind sign, is read as every kind of prosperity and happiness through the favor of a great ruler36.33, with honor from a foreign ruler and well-being in the household36.34. Count those houses: that is most of the chart. The book names far more good places for Rahu than bad ones.
When the Rahu years go well
Rahu rules eighteen years, and here the verses turn generous. For a well-placed Rahu the text reads desired things achieved through friends and those above you, the comfort of vehicles, the birth of a son, a new house built, a turn of mind toward dharma, and great celebrations36.31.
Read for now: "through friends and superiors" is the colleague who puts your name forward, the senior who opens a door; "vehicles" is a car, or the freedom to travel. The line about a son is the book's own idiom for a family growing, and it is a reading rather than a prediction — anything about having children belongs with a doctor, not a chart.
There is more when Rahu keeps good company. Joined or aspected by kind planets, and joined with a yogakaraka (a planet ruling both an angle and a trine, which ties strength to luck), its years are read as royal honor abroad and gifts of clothes and jewelry36.32 — recognition that arrives from far outside your own circle, which is very Rahu. The text paints those years; it does not forecast your income. The whole eighteen years are laid out in Rahu's mahadasha.
When this text reads Rahu as hard
It does name the bad placements, and you deserve them in the text's own words.
The first condition is the house: Rahu in the 8th or the 12th, where the text reads those years as bringing hardship instead36.34. The second is company and dignity: Rahu joined with a malefic, or in its sign of debility, where it reads loss of position and a troubled mind36.35. It goes on — the happiness of wife and children spoiled, poor food, and as those years open, bodily trouble and a loss of wealth and grain36.36.
Then a detail that helps. Even these hard years have a shape: in their middle the text reads happiness and gain in your own land, and at their end hardship again, loss of position and anguish of mind36.37. A hard start, a better middle, a hard close.
How to read that today, in three parts. It belongs to a particular Rahu — in the 8th or 12th, debilitated, or with malefics — and it is the mirror of the strong Rahu above, not a sentence on everyone's Rahu years. It speaks the court's language, so "loss of position" reads naturally as trouble with a job or a role, while "the happiness of wife and children spoiled" is strain at home, which the verse names and does not explain. And one verse is never the whole chart: the same Rahu joined or aspected by kind planets turns the reading the other way36.32.
These are the book's readings, kept as it gives them, not predictions. The lines about the mind and the body are old words, not a diagnosis; if you are struggling, a doctor or someone you trust is the place to start, and a worry about money or family belongs with people who can help.
What these verses never say about the North Node
Four things people look for are not here, and saying so is more useful than filling the gap.
There is no karmic lesson, no unfinished business, no life purpose attached to Rahu in this book. Those readings belong to other traditions and may still be worth something to you; they did not come from here. There is nothing about Rahu maturing at age forty-two — we searched all 4,197 verses for maturity and found no such rule for any planet. There is no gemstone, no ritual and no remedy for Rahu in any verse on this page, so we will not offer one. And nothing addresses Rahu's motion, which comes up because the nodes always appear to move backward; the strength-of-motion rules leave them out, as retrograde planets sets out.
Four questions to put to your own Rahu
- Sign. Is Rahu in Taurus, its exaltation, or Virgo, its own house? Or in its sign of debility?36.29,36.30,36.35
- House. Is it in an angle, a trine, the 3rd or the 11th — or in the 8th or 12th?36.33,36.34
- Company. Do kind planets join it or look at it? Does a yogakaraka sit with it? Or is it with malefics?36.32,36.35
- Timing. Which part of the eighteen years are you in: the start, the middle or the end?36.37
Most charts pass some and fail others, which is why "Rahu is bad" is a slogan and not a reading. The text treats Saturn the same way, and is Saturn always bad? tells that story. Rahu with Jupiter has a popular name the book never uses, covered in Guru Chandal yoga, and the Rahu–Ketu axis another in Kaal Sarp Dosha. How the engine turns verses into tests on a real chart is in how AstroEngine reads the BPHS.
Questions to sit with if Rahu is prominent in your chart
- Where in your life are you the outsider, doing the thing nobody around you was trained for?
- The text pairs fearsome with intelligent in one line. Where do those two sit together in you?
- What recognition has reached you from far outside your own circle, and did you trust it?
- The army image turns on who is directing it. In the part of life Rahu touches, who is giving the orders?
The North Node (Rahu): quick answers
Is the North Node the same as Rahu?
The same point in the sky, read by two different traditions. This text reads Rahu as a planet with a sign, a house, company and years of its own, and says nothing about a soul's direction.

Which placements does it read as hard?
Does Rahu mature at 42?
Not in this book. No maturity rule appears in the 4,197 verses we searched.
Where Rahu stands in your chart
Your reading says where Rahu stands in your own chart and what this text says of it: its sign and house, the planets beside it and looking at it, and when its eighteen years run. If your Rahu is the hard one it says so plainly, and shows you what in your chart turns it.
