A Sun in your 1st house in Vedic astrology places the planet this text ranks as a king3.3 in the house of your own body, your looks and your character. In the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), a Sanskrit text on reading charts that is centuries old, the Sun also heads the list of house significators, and the 1st is the house it signifies12.37. So the Sun is standing in its own field, and how well it does there depends mostly on one thing you can look up today: your rising sign.
That said, one planet is one voice in a crowded room. A planet beside it in the 1st, the sign your Moon chose, or whichever planet's years you're living in can each pull this Sun a different way. Your free personal reading takes all of that in together and gives you a single page, written to you.
What a 1st-house Sun looks like in your week
You walk into a room and people place you quickly. You may not say much, but you rarely go unnoticed, and when a group stalls, eyes drift your way. A 1st-house Sun is the planet of rank sitting in the house of the self, so the way you carry yourself is where it shows first.
The 1st house is read for the body and its form, for knowledge, for strength and weakness, for character and for constitution17.1. So a planet here colors the whole person.
Among the planets, the Sun is ranked with the Moon as a king, while Mars is the commander and Mercury the prince3.3. Seat a king in the house that holds your body, and the reading is about presence: how you hold a room, and how hard you find it to play a supporting part for long.
Is the Sun the 1st house's own significator?
Each house has a significator, a planet that naturally stands for its matters. Here the text gives two answers side by side, and it's worth knowing both.
The passage on significators opens by naming the birth-lagna itself, your rising sign, as the 1st house's own karaka12.34. A few verses on, the list that runs through all twelve houses starts with the Sun, so the Sun is the significator of the 1st12.37. The passage doesn't rank the two. We read them as working together: your rising sign is the house, and the Sun is the planet that speaks for it.
How strong a rising Sun is by position
Every planet has a direction it prefers. For the Sun, and for Mars, it is the south3.24, which in a birth chart is the 10th house, the top of the wheel. A later chapter turns this into a number, counted by how far the Sun stands from the opposite point, the 4th house: the farther from the 4th, the stronger42.13.
Run that for a 1st-house Sun and you land three signs from the 4th, which comes to about half of what the 10th gives. So by position alone, your Sun is neither at its peak nor at its low point. For the top of that count, see the Sun in the 10th house; for its floor, the Sun in the 4th house.
Half is plenty to work with. Position is one score of several, and the score that usually decides how a 1st-house Sun behaves is its sign, which for you is the same as your rising sign.
Where the Sun looks from your 1st house
From the 1st, the Sun looks straight across the chart at your 7th house. Planets see some houses partly, and the 7th from where they stand fully9.22. The partial looks are laid out in our page on aspects in Vedic astrology.
The effect of that gaze on your 7th depends on the sign there and on anything sitting in it, so only your own chart can answer it. The verses this page reads don't spell out a result for the Sun's look on the 7th, so we won't invent one.
Your father, read through this Sun
People with a prominent Sun often find their father comes up when they talk about who they are, whether as a model, a rival or a gap. The text has a precise way to look at him.
For the father, count nine houses on from wherever the Sun stands12.32. With the Sun in your 1st, the 9th from the Sun is simply your own 9th house, so its sign, its ruler and anything in it are where your chart speaks about him. Take that as the text's way of reflecting on a family bond, never as a verdict on a real person; choices about family, health or money are yours to make with the people involved and the right professional.
The Vedic rising Sun and the Western one
If you've read a Western take on this placement, you've probably met the confident, visible, "main character" Sun in the 1st. The Vedic reading keeps that, and adds a frame around it.
First, the zodiac. Vedic charts place planets against the stars, so most Western positions slide back by most of a sign. Our sidereal vs tropical guide explains how far and why. Your Vedic Sun may sit in the sign before your Western Sun, and your rising sign may shift too.
Second, the houses. The charts on this site count whole signs: your rising sign is the entire 1st house, and the Sun is in the 1st whenever it shares that sign. Because the Sun's sign was the one coming up over the eastern horizon, this placement means you were born in the hours around sunrise. Western house systems can disagree. If your Western chart puts the Sun in the 1st house but in the sign after your rising sign, the Vedic chart counts it in the 2nd. If the Sun is in the sign before your rising sign, it is a Vedic 12th-house Sun, a placement we cover in Sun in the 12th house.
Third, the Vedic chart adds questions of its own: how much good strength your Sun keeps in its sign, what job it does for your particular rising sign, and when its six years fall. Those answers are where two people with the same placement part ways.
All 12 rising signs: what your Sun keeps
With the Sun in the 1st, your Sun sign and your rising sign are the same sign, so each rising sign below is also the sign your Sun is in. If you don't know yours yet, start with how to find your Vedic rising sign; the other first-house planets are in our Vedic astrology guides.
Good strength by sign runs on a scale. Exaltation gives the Sun the whole measure. Its root sign (moolatrikona) leaves three parts in four, its own house two in four, and a friendly sign one in four3.51. A neutral's sign leaves one part in eight, and its fall or an enemy's sign leaves nothing3.52. The Moon, Mars and Jupiter are the Sun's friends, Mercury is neutral, and Venus and Saturn are its enemies3.44.
The second verdict comes from a chapter that reads each rising sign and says which planets act kindly for it (a benefic for that chart) and which act harshly (a malefic for that chart). It's a judgment about the planet's job in your chart, separate from its strength.
You rise in | Your Sun's sign is | Good strength it keeps | Its role for your rising sign |
|---|---|---|---|
Aries (Mars's sign)2.7 | its exaltation3.38 | all of it | benefic16.13 |
Taurus (Venus's sign)2.8 | an enemy's | none | benefic16.16 |
Gemini (Mercury's sign)2.9 | a neutral's | an eighth | malefic16.18 |
Cancer (the Moon's sign)2.11 | a friend's | a quarter | not named; Mars alone is the royal-yoga planet16.20 |
Leo (the Sun's own)2.12 | root sign for the first 20°, own sign after3.40 | three quarters, then half | gives good results16.22 |
Virgo (Mercury's sign)2.14 | a neutral's | an eighth | not named16.24 |
Libra (Venus's sign)2.15 | its fall3.39 | none | malefic16.26 |
Scorpio (Mars's sign)2.16 | a friend's | a quarter | with the Moon, the yoga-making pair16.28 |
Sagittarius (Jupiter's sign)2.17 | a friend's | a quarter | benefic; with Mercury, a royal yoga16.30 |
Capricorn (Saturn's sign)2.19 | an enemy's | none | not named16.32 |
Aquarius (Saturn's sign)2.22 | an enemy's | none | not named16.34 |
Pisces (Jupiter's sign)2.24 | a friend's | a quarter | malefic16.36 |
"Not named" means that rising sign's verses list their kind and harsh planets and leave the Sun off both lists. A royal yoga (raja yoga) is a combination the text singles out for rank and success, and a yoga-making planet (yoga-karaka) is one the verse picks out to form such combinations for that rising sign.
Three rows pull apart from the rest. Aries rising gives the Sun its exaltation and a benefic role, the best of both verdicts. Leo rising makes the Sun the ruler of your rising sign as well as its occupant. And for Leo rising there is one more verse: if the rising sign is the Sun's own and the Sun occupies it, joined with or aspected by Mars and Jupiter, one becomes endowed with wealth24.7. Both planets are named, so check for each.
Libra rising is the hard mirror. The Sun sits in its fall, keeps no good strength by sign, and is named a malefic for that rising sign. The next section covers what can turn it.
What lifts or dims a Sun in the 1st
Picture two people with the same rising Sun. One seems to grow into themselves every year. The other keeps second-guessing who they are. The difference often lives in what the Sun meets, and in how your rising sign's ruler is doing.
Start with the hard case, which is about any house's lord. The trouble begins when that lord is combust, swallowed by the Sun's glare, or is joined with the lords of the three hard houses (6th, 8th, 12th) and the like17.13. It also begins when the lord fails to look back at its own house, or is "dead", aged, asleep or afflicted; then the happiness that house gives is to be called destroyed, and its fruit doubtful17.14. With your Sun in the 1st, the house in question is your 1st, and the planet to check is your rising sign's ruler. If it sits right beside your Sun, it may be combust.
Today that can read as a self that feels outshone: a strong sense of what you want, and less trust in your own body, looks or health than the rest of you deserves. It asks you to give the ruler of your 1st house room, which in practice can mean building the side of you that planet stands for, instead of letting the Sun's side do all the talking.
What turns it, in the same chapter: a house looked at by kind planets and joined with its own ruler as a benefic, with that ruler youthful, awake and princely in state, flourishes17.15. The ruler's own look at its house makes that house's happiness grow, and the text applies this to every house alike17.16. Leo rising gets a head start here, since the Sun is both the 1st's ruler and its occupant.
The six years your rising Sun runs
In the Vimshottari system, the planets take turns running long stretches of your life, and the Sun's stretch is six years35.14,35.15. Those are your Sun years, and a 1st-house Sun tends to put you at the center of them.
A strong Sun gives these years sons, a sharp mind and wisdom, higher standing, learning, money, a name, valor and contentment. A weak one gives plans that fail, money lost, sickness, dread of the powerful turning against you, unrest, affliction and the risk of fire36.1. A Sun endowed with strength, standing in its own divisions, makes its years very happy and brings money in36.3. Today, "standing" can look like a promotion, a public role or simply being the one people come to. Any health worry in these years is a question for a doctor, not for a chart.
The weak Sun has its own checklist: in its fall, sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th, lacking strength, in malefic company, beside Rahu or Ketu, or in company with the lords of those three hard houses36.7. With any of these, its years bring great affliction, ruin of wealth and grain, the anger of people in power, going abroad, and money lost to penalties imposed by authority36.8. For a 1st-house Sun, Libra rising meets the first of those conditions outright, and the Sun with Rahu or Ketu in the 1st meets another.
The same passage goes on, still describing that weak Sun: worry centered on your father's relatives, and people turning hostile. A benefic's look at the Sun lets some happiness in partway through those years; a malefic's look leaves only the hard results36.11. What those years can ask of you is less pride and more patience with authority, while you check what is actually looking at your Sun.
Which rising Sun is yours?
Same placement, very different people. These four checks, in order, tell you which version you're carrying.
- Your rising sign. It is also your Sun's sign. In Aries the Sun keeps all its good strength3.51; in Libra, Taurus, Capricorn or Aquarius it keeps none3.52.
- Your rising sign's ruler. If it is lost in your Sun's glare (combust), or joined with the lords of the 6th, 8th or 12th17.13, the text calls the 1st house's happiness destroyed, its fruit doubtful17.14; if it looks at your 1st, that house's happiness grows17.16.
- What shares the house. A malefic, Rahu or Ketu in the 1st with your Sun is on the list that marks a weak Sun's years36.7.
- Whether you're in your Sun years. Find your current Vimshottari ruler; if it's the Sun, the strong-or-weak reading above is the one running now36.1.
Each of these can tilt the others, and that is the part a one-placement page can't do for you. Give your birth date, time and place to the free personal reading, and it reads your chart as one whole, with this Sun in among everything else.
Questions for a Sun that rises with you
- When do you step forward before anyone invites you, and when do you hold back for an invitation?
- When you feel unseen, is it about other people, or about not trusting your own presence?
- What does your relationship with your father, or with authority, teach you about how you carry yourself?
- If your Sun years are ahead of you, what would you want to be standing on when they arrive?
Sun in the 1st house: quick answers
Is the Sun in the 1st house good in Vedic astrology?
What does the Sun in the 1st house say about my career?
Little, on its own. The 1st house's list in this text is the body, knowledge, strength, character and constitution17.1, and work isn't on it. This page reads the birth chart, not transits. For the Sun and work, see the Sun in the 10th house.
What does the Sun in the 1st house mean for my looks and personality?
Does the Sun in the 1st house affect marriage?
From the 1st, the Sun looks fully at your 7th9.22. The verses here don't give a marriage result for that look, so what it means for you depends on your 7th house's own sign and planets.
What happens if the Sun is in the 1st house with Rahu?
Are there remedies for a Sun in the 1st house?
None of the verses this page reads gives one for this placement, and we don't recommend stones or paid rituals.
