The Sun in the 11th house of the birth chart, counted from the rising sign: the house of what you gain.An illustration of the placement, not your chart.
In Vedic astrology, a Sun in the 11th house sits well: this is one of its good houses. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, a centuries-old Sanskrit text, puts the 11th by name on its short list of houses that make the Sun's own years good ones, alongside a strong sign and the company of the planets that rule your 9th and 10th houses36.2. How much it gives you depends on the sign your Sun lands in, and your rising sign sets that.
Your Sun is still a single planet, though. The planets that share its house, the sign holding your Moon and the planet whose period is running for you today can each tilt this placement. Your free personal reading weighs your Sun against all of that and writes up what your own chart says, plainly.
A Sun in the 11th, on an ordinary Tuesday
You're the one a manager picks to lead the new project, and the raise tends to follow. People above you notice your work and say so out loud. That is the Sun in the 11th at its best, as we read the verses on its years below.
In the planets' court, the Sun is one of the two kings, with the Moon3.3. The text draws it brightly: honey-colored eyes, a well-proportioned body, pure, fiery (pitta) in constitution, glorious and masculine3.12. A king placed in the house of gains, as we read it, collects: what you work for comes in, and much of it is handed down by people with power over you.
For the 11th, the text lists what arrives: goods of every kind, a husband or wife, children, and growing herds17.11. Today the herd is your savings, your gear, the slow pile of things you earned. An elder brother belongs to this house as well12.35.
Read what follows about your Sun as something to reflect on. The text describes; it doesn't forecast or advise, and when money, health or family is on the line, the call is yours, made with a professional or with the people it affects.
Why the house of gains suits the Sun
Your Sun is in a growth house. The 11th is one of four upachaya houses, a word that means "increase", with the 3rd, 6th and 10th counted from where you stand, and the text rates all four as excellent8.36.
One thing to keep straight: the 11th's own significator, the planet the text ties to this house by nature, is Jupiter, not the Sun12.37. So a Sun here is a king working in Jupiter's house, and our page on Jupiter in the 11th house reads the natural owner.
How the Vedic Sun in the 11th differs from your Western chart
If you've read about this in Western astrology, you were told this house is about your circle, your causes and your wishes, and a Sun there makes your sense of self depend on the people around you. The Vedic reading moves the weight. In Parashara's list the 11th opens with gains, the place where what you're owed actually lands.
Your Western Sun may not even be in this house in a Vedic chart. The Vedic zodiac is sidereal, measured against the stars, and it runs about 24 degrees behind the tropical one, so your Sun often moves back a sign, and your rising sign can too, which can change the house. Our page on sidereal vs tropical shows the shift, and your Vedic rising sign page helps you find your real starting point.
And friends? They do turn up, later, in what the Sun's seasons bring you. The verse that lists the 11th's own matters doesn't name them.
Your rising sign sets your Sun's sign: all 12
Your 11th house is the sign eleven places along from your rising sign (the rising sign is number one), so your rising sign decides where your Sun sits. Two separate questions follow, and the text answers both.
The first is strength. Exalted, a planet gives all of its good strength; in moolatrikona, three quarters; at home, half; in a friend's sign, one quarter3.51. A neutral's sign leaves it an eighth, and its debilitation or an enemy's sign leaves it nothing3.52.
Those terms, briefly. Exaltation is a planet's strongest sign; for the Sun that's Aries3.38. Its debilitation, its weakest, is the seventh sign from there, Libra3.39. Moolatrikona ranks just below exaltation: for the Sun, Leo up to its twentieth degree, with the rest of Leo simply its own sign3.40. As for the Sun's friends, the text calls Mercury neutral, Venus and Saturn enemies, and the Moon, Mars and Jupiter friends3.44.
The second question is kindness. Chapter 16 goes through every rising sign and sorts the planets into kind (benefic) and hard (malefic) for a person with that sign rising. A strong Sun can still sit on the hard list for your rising sign, so the table gives both.
Where the last column says "not named", that rising sign's verse sorts some planets into kind and hard, and the Sun is in neither group. For Scorpio rising, the verse makes the Sun and the Moon together the makers of a good combination (yoga-karakas), so for you the Sun and your Moon are read as a pair16.28.
That table uses the fixed friendship between planets. Your own chart adds a second, temporary friendship that can move a row up or down, and our page on planet friends and enemies explains how.
When a strong Sun is still on the hard list
Gemini and Libra rising are the rows people misread. With Gemini rising, your Sun is exalted in the house of gains, about as strong as a Sun gets. Yet the same text puts the Sun among the hard planets for a Gemini rising sign.
The text doesn't rank these two tests against each other, so we won't either. Read them as two facts about one Sun: strength says how much it has to give, and the hard listing says the text counts it among the planets that work against your rising sign. Which one wins in your chart, the verses don't say.
Libra rising is the mirror. Your Sun sits at home in Leo, with three quarters of its full strength in the first twenty degrees, and chapter 16 still names it hard for you. With Aries or Sagittarius rising it's the reverse: the Sun is kind for you, yet has no good strength in its sign, so it means well with little to spend.
Your six Sun years
Over a lifetime you pass through nine planets' years, one after another, and the Sun's are six35.15. They come first in the cycle's fixed order, with the Moon's next35.14. Your entry point in that order is set by the Moon at your birth; our guide to mahadasha and antardasha shows how to find yours.
A strong Sun's years read well. The text lists a rise in status, children, intelligence and wisdom, learning, wealth, fame, courage and happiness36.1. With the Sun at strength and in its own divisional signs, those years bring great happiness and money coming in36.3. The "royal honor, horses and palanquins" of the next verse can be, today, a public award or a seat at a bigger table36.4.
The last verse of that set reads like a promotion letter. The ruler is pleased with you; you grow wealthy, lead people as an army's commander would, and you're happy, with new clothes and vehicles36.6. In our reading, that's a boss who backs you and a team that follows.
Your house is in the text's own list for this. The verse asks for the Sun in its moolatrikona, its own sign, its exaltation or its deepest exaltation, placed in a corner or trine house or in the 11th, and joined with the rulers of your 9th and 10th houses36.2. Your four corners are houses 1, 4, 7 and 10; the 5th and 9th close a triangle with your 1st, which is why they are called trines. The 11th is covered; the sign and the company are up to your chart.
Your Sun's turn in the other planets' years
Each planet's years are cut into nine smaller stretches, one per planet, and this page calls each stretch a season. Your Sun gets one in each, and in nearly all of them the text names the 11th as a place that makes it a good one.
Planet whose years are running
Sun's placement the verse asks for
What the verse reads
the Sun's own
the Sun in a corner house, the 11th or a trine, or exalted or in its own sign37.18
wealth, grain and the like
the Moon's
the Sun strong, exalted or in its own sign, or in a corner, a trine, the 11th, 2nd or 3rd37.151
a lost position won back, money, a happy home, land, help from friends and people in power37.152
Mars's
the Sun exalted, in its own sign or moolatrikona, in a corner or the 11th, or with the 9th and 10th rulers37.217
vehicles, fame, a son, plenty and prosperity at home37.218
Rahu's
the Sun exalted, in its own sign, a corner, a trine or the 11th, or in its exalted or own sign in the navamsa (D9)37.290
with a kind planet's aspect too: favor from those above you, plenty, and some real comfort37.291
Jupiter's
the Sun exalted or in its own sign, or in a corner, a trine, the 3rd or the 11th37.362
or joined with strength in the 9th, and likewise counted from Jupiter: money and the shine of public honor37.363
Saturn's
the Sun exalted or in its own sign, with the 9th ruler, or in a corner, the 11th or a trine37.424
or with kind planets' aspect: happiness through your employer, a thriving home, more joy through your children37.425
Mercury's
the Sun exalted, in its own sign, a corner, a trine, the 2nd or the 11th, or exalted or at home in the navamsa37.487
good fortune from those above you, great happiness through friends and your employer; land early on if Mars aspects it37.488
Ketu's
the Sun exalted or in its own sign, or in a corner, a trine or the 11th, with a kind planet's aspect37.549
money, favor, many good undertakings, the aim you set out for reached37.550
Venus's years are the exception. There the text counts the 11th from Venus, not from your rising sign: the Sun's season goes well with the Sun exalted, at home or in a friend's sign, in a corner or trine, or in the 11th or 2nd from Venus37.621. Then it reads money, your standing on the rise, your partner and your riches doing well, happiness through your employer, and a reunion with someone dear to you37.622.
So eight of the nine planets' years name the 11th as a good spot for the Sun's season. The friends Western astrology puts in this house appear here, in the Moon's and Mercury's years, as people who help.
When the Sun in the 11th reads hard
A house of gains doesn't protect a weak Sun. The text's list for hard Sun years is a Sun that is debilitated, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, weak, with harsh planets, joined with Rahu or Ketu, or with the rulers of the 6th, 8th or 12th36.7. Your Sun in the 11th escapes the house clause, but the rest can still apply: a Sagittarius rising sign puts it in Libra, its debilitation, and Rahu or Ketu beside it counts on its own.
In those years the text reads great trouble: wealth and grain lost, the ruler displeased, travel abroad, and money lost through the ruler's punishment36.8. In a modern life, that might be a boss turning on you, a move you didn't choose, a fine or a ruling that costs you. The text also reads worry over your father's side of the family and people turning hostile; a kind planet's aspect brings some happiness in the middle of those years, while a harsh planet's aspect leaves only the hard reading36.11. In this text the Sun stands for your father5.42.
One combination is hard by name. When the Sun sits in the 11th together with Rahu, Mars and Saturn, the text reads a person deprived of their vocation, their line of work17.218. That takes four planets in one house. No verse on this page speaks to that combination to soften it, and we won't invent one. If it's yours, this one line still isn't your whole chart, so look at everything else before you settle on it.
Which Sun in the 11th is yours?
Work through these four in order:
Find your row in the table. Exalted in Aries, your Sun gives everything it has3.51. In Libra, Taurus, Aquarius or Capricorn, it has none to give3.52.
See who shares the 11th. Rahu or Ketu there puts your Sun on the hard-years list36.7, and the Sun with Rahu, Mars and Saturn all together is the one named hard case17.218.
Look at the aspects. For a weak Sun, a kind planet's aspect brings some happiness in the middle of its years36.11.
Note whose years you're in. If they're Venus's, count the 11th from Venus, not from your rising sign37.621.
No check settles it alone, and your Sun sign by itself shows none of this. The four answers matter only side by side, and your free personal reading sets them side by side for you, with the rest of your chart, in words about your life.
What these verses don't say about the Sun in the 11th
People ask whether a Sun here means pride, what a partner with this placement looks like, and which career it points to. We found no answer to them in the verses read for this page. The 11th's own list counts a spouse and children among what the house brings in17.11, and says nothing about looks or how you'd meet.
Nor do these verses cover the Sun passing through your 11th by transit, the Sun in the 11th of the navamsa (D9), or a remedy for this placement, and we don't borrow answers from other books. How we search the text, and how we mark its gaps, is explained in how AstroEngine reads the BPHS.
Who has opened a door for you without being asked, and what did they see in you?

Short answers on the Sun in the 11th house
Is the Sun in the 11th house good in Vedic astrology?
Mostly. The 11th is on the text's list of places that make the Sun's years good, with a strong sign and the 9th and 10th rulers asked for too36.2. How much it gives depends on the sign, from full strength in Aries to none in Libra.
Does the Sun in the 11th give wealth?
A strong Sun's years read money coming in36.3, and so do most of its seasons. In a weak Sun's years the text reads losses instead36.8. It never names an amount.
With which rising sign is the Sun in the 11th strongest?
Gemini, which puts the Sun in Aries, its exaltation3.38. The same text lists the Sun as hard for a Gemini rising sign, so strong and easy aren't the same thing.
Is the Sun in the 11th house good for an elder sibling?
The 11th is the elder brother's house12.35. What a Sun there does for that sibling, the verses we read for this page leave unsaid.
Can the Sun in the 11th be retrograde?
No. Seen from Earth, the Sun never seems to move backward, so no chart has a retrograde Sun.
We haven't named any, because public birth times are often rounded, and a few minutes can move your rising sign, and with it the house.
Is the Sun in your 11th?
Look up two things in your Vedic chart: the sign your Sun is in, and the sign that was rising when you were born. If the Sun's sign comes two signs before the rising sign, the way Aries comes before Gemini, your Sun is in the 11th. Look up your rising sign's row in the 12-sign table for your Sun's strength, then see what else sits in the house with it, since the one combination named hard for this house needs Rahu, Mars and Saturn there too.
The verses
From the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, with our plain-English reading. Where a verse is in the public-domain Bombay 1899 printing, the page link opens the scan, so you can read it there yourself.
[If the Sun is] in its mulatrikona, own sign, its own exaltation, or supreme exaltation (parama-uccha) — situated in a kendra, trikona, or the 11th house, and conjoined with the 9th and 10th lords —
One should know the dhana-bhava [2nd] by the dara-karaka itself; in the 11th, the elder brother's [karaka]; and in the 3rd, the younger [siblings'].
BPHS 8.36
The fourth and the eighth [ashta] they call chaturasra, O best of the twice-born. From one's own place, the third, sixth, eleventh and tenth are the upachaya houses, indeed excellent.
Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn — these are the bhava-karakas [of the twelve houses in order].
In its own exaltation, a graha's auspicious strength is full; in its moolatrikona, it is full less a quarter; in its own sign it is half; in a friend's sign it is declared to be only a quarter.
In a neutral's sign it is declared to be an eighth; it is void in debilitation, combustion, or an enemy's sign. Likewise the wise should state malefic/inauspicious strength in the reverse order.
Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces, and Libra are declared, in order, to be the signs of exaltation (uchcha) of the Sun and the other grahas.
The precise degree of exaltation for each graha is given by a series of word-numerals; the sign of debilitation (nicha) is the seventh from the exaltation sign, at the same degree already stated (the exact numeric values encoded by the word-numerals in this verse are not fully certain without further cross-reference).
The Sun's moolatrikona spans the first twenty degrees of Leo, the remainder of Leo being its own house; the Moon is exalted in the first three degrees of Taurus, the rest of Taurus being its moolatrikona.
Mercury is neutral to the Sun; Venus and Saturn are its enemies; the remaining grahas are its friends. To the Moon, certain grahas stand as related; the rest of the grahas are neutral to it (natural friendship/enmity, naisargika-maitri).
Venus's moolatrikona spans fifteen degrees of Libra, the rest of Libra being its own sign; Saturn's moolatrikona spans twenty degrees of Aquarius, the rest being its own sign.
BPHS 16.13
For Mesha (Aries) lagna: Saturn, Mercury, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Sun are benefic. The mere combination of Saturn and Jupiter does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
BPHS 2.24
Its ruler is Jupiter (suracharya, teacher of the gods). Thus have the natures of the signs been declared; each consists of thirty degrees, for the purpose of both gross and subtle results.
For Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna: Jupiter, Venus, and the Moon are malefic; Saturn and the Sun are benefic. The one Raja-yoga-karaka is Saturn (रवेः सुतः, "son of the Sun") alone, directly.
Dwelling in the east, of royal kinship, roaming the mountains, of rajo-guna, rising by its back (prishthodaya), and of fiery nature — the sign Aries is ruled by Mars.
For Mithuna (Gemini) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun are malefic; Venus alone is benefic. The combination of Saturn and Jupiter [here] gives results the same way as [described] for one born in Mesha lagna.
White, ruled by Venus, long-bodied, quadruped, strong by night, dwelling in the south, domesticated, of the merchant class, earthy, female, and rising by its back — this is Taurus.
For Karka (Cancer) lagna: Venus and Mercury are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत, "son of the earth") alone becomes the Raja-yoga-karaka, directly.
BPHS 2.9
Rising by its head, depicted as a pair of humans — one bearing a mace, the other a vina — ruled by Mercury (whose direction is west), biped, strong by night, foremost among domesticated creatures, and of airy nature — this is Gemini.
For Simha (Leo) lagna: Mercury, Venus, and Saturn (अर्कज, "son of the Sun") are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun give auspicious results. The mere combination of Jupiter and Venus does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
Leo, ruled by the Sun, is of sattva-guna, quadruped, of the kshatriya class, strong, rising by its head, large-bodied, pale/tawny, and strong in the earlier part of the day.
For Tula (Libra) lagna: Jupiter, the Sun, and Mars are malefic; Saturn and Mercury are benefic. The Moon and its "son" (Mercury) become the karakas of Raja-yoga.
Associated with grain and fire, of the vaishya class, of variegated color, windy (restless) in nature; a maiden, joined with tamas, of youthful disposition, and ruled by Mercury.
For Vrishchika (Scorpio) lagna: Mercury, Mars, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Moon are benefic. The Sun and the Moon together become the Yoga-karakas.
Head-rising, endowed with strength by day, of the shudra class, of rajo-guna; ruled by Venus, lord of the west, of medium body, and biped — this is Tula (Libra).
For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna: Venus alone is malefic; Mercury and the Sun are benefic. Their combination (Sun and Mercury) is a Raja-yoga; the maraka is Saturn (भास्करसुत, "son of the Sun").
Head-rising, small-bodied, many-legged, of the brahmin class, strong, associated with the benefics, strong by day, tawny-colored, moving through water and earth; abundant in bristles and extremely sharp-limbed — this is Vrishchika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars.
For Makara (Capricorn) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are malefic; Venus and Mercury (चन्द्रज, "son of the Moon") are benefic. Saturn is itself the maraka; Mars and the other [aforesaid malefics act as marakas] through association.
For Kumbha (Aquarius) lagna: Jupiter, the Moon, and Mars are malefic; Venus (दैत्यगुरु, "teacher of the demons") alone is benefic. Venus is the Raja-yoga-karaka, together with Mars and Jupiter.
Dhanu, continued: situated in the east, roaming the earth, radiant, and rising by its back. Then, for Makara (Capricorn): ruled by Saturn, of tamas, earthy, south-dwelling, and strong by night.
For Meena (Pisces) lagna: Saturn, Venus, and the Sun are malefic; Mercury, Mars, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत) and Jupiter together become the Yoga-karakas.
[Their dasha periods, encoded as number-words, are, in order:] six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven, and twenty years, respectively held [as the dasha-years for Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and Venus].
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu (tamas), Jupiter (vakpati), Saturn, Mercury (manda-chandra-ja), Ketu, and Venus — these, in order, should be known as the dasha-lords.
Now the chapter on the results of the dashas: first, by the Vimshottari system, the results of the Sun's mahadasha. An excellent (strong) dasha of the Sun brings sons, intelligence, wisdom, elevation of authority/status, gain of knowledge, wealth, fame, valor, and happiness, by the grace of the Lord. A malefic (weak) dasha of the Sun brings failure in undertakings, loss of wealth, illness, fear from royal displeasure, disturbances, affliction, and danger from fire.
When the Sun is endowed with strength, situated in its own varga (divisional dignity) and joined with strength — in that dasha, great happiness, gain of wealth, and other auspicious results occur.
Great royal honor, [the gift of] horses, palanquins, and other auspicious things [occur]; when conjoined with the lord of the 5th house (sutadhipa), the gain of a son is known.
[The native gains] the king's satisfaction, becomes wealthy, a commander of an army, and a happy person; the gain of garments and vehicles [also occurs] — thus, in the dasha of a strong Sun.
When the Sun is in a kendra, 11th, or trikona, or in its own exaltation or own sign, in its own bhukti [within its own mahadasha] there is gain of wealth, grain, and the like.
BPHS 37.151
In Moon's mahadasha, Sun's antardasha: when Sun is strong, in its own exaltation or own sign, or in a kendra, trikona, the 11th, the 2nd, or the 3rd house —
— it gives recovery of a lost kingdom and gain of wealth, and auspicious well-being at home; through the favor of friends and kings, gain of villages, land, and the like.
BPHS 37.217
In Mars's mahadasha, Sun's antardasha: when the Sun is in its own exaltation, own sign, or a kendra, its mulatrikona, or the 11th, or joined with the lords of the 9th and 10th —
BPHS 37.218
— in its bhukti one obtains vehicles, fame, and gain of a son; there is abundance of wealth and grain, and well-being and prosperity at home.
In Rahu's mahadasha, Sun's antardasha: when the Sun is in its own exaltation, own sign, a kendra, trikona, or the 11th, or in its exaltation-navamsha or own navamsha —
In Saturn's mahadasha, Sun's antardasha: when the Sun is in its own exaltation or own sign, joined with the 9th-lord, or in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona —
— or aspected by benefics, in its antardasha there is great happiness through one's own master, well-being and prosperity at home, and increase of happiness through sons and the like.
In Mercury's mahadasha, Sun's antardasha: when the Sun is in its own exaltation, own sign, a kendra, a trikona, the 2nd, or the 11th, or its exaltation-navamsha or own navamsha —
— there is good fortune through royal grace, and great happiness through friends and one's master; if aspected by Mars, at the beginning there is gain of land as well.
In Ketu's mahadasha, Sun's antardasha: when the Sun is in its own exaltation or own sign, or in a kendra, trikona, or the 11th, aspected by a benefic —
— it gives gain of wealth and grain, and splendor through royal favor; many auspicious undertakings, and the accomplishment of one's desired aim, bringing happiness.
But if the Sun is in its own exaltation, own sign, a friend's sign, a kendra, or a kona, or if it is in a kendra, kona, the 11th, or the 2nd from the dasha-lord —
— in its bhukti there is gain of wealth, and prosperity of kingdom, wife, and riches; great happiness through one's own master, and reunion with a beloved kinsman.
[If the Sun is] debilitated, in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, weak, conjoined with malefics, joined with Rahu or Ketu, or conjoined with the lords of the difficult houses (dushtana, i.e. 6th/8th/12th) —
In that dasha [of a weak Sun], great affliction occurs, causing destruction of wealth and grain; royal displeasure, travel abroad, and loss of wealth through royal punishment [also occur].
One experiences mental distress regarding the father's side of the family, and hostility from people. If the Sun is aspected by benefics, some happiness occurs in the middle of that dasha; if aspected by a malefic, the person should be told only malefic results.
