Saturn in 4th house in Vedic astrology: home and land

Saturn in the 4th house in Vedic astrology: what it reads for your home, whom it looks at, all 12 rising signs, its 19 years, and checks for your chart.

Saturn at the bottom of the birth chart, in the 4th house: your home, your land, your kin and the vehicle you drive. An illustration of the placement, not your chart.

Saturn in the 4th house puts Saturn in the house of your home, your land and your family, and in Vedic astrology its verdict hangs on your rising sign. When Saturn both rules and occupies your 4th, at home in Capricorn as it is for Libra rising, a centuries-old Sanskrit text, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, reads a growth in comfort and in vehicles17.64. A hard reading exists too, tied to conditions you can check below.

A 4th-house Saturn is one room in a bigger building, though. The planets beside it, your Moon's house and the planet whose years are running now may tilt the reading, kinder or harder. Your free personal reading takes in the whole building at once and sends you a page written from it.

What a 4th-house Saturn looks like at home

Maybe you were the kid who knew where the spare key was and which bill came due on Friday. Home, for you, is often something you keep running, and the comfort you get from it is comfort you built yourself, one repaired shelf at a time.

That picture comes from Saturn's rank. Among the planets seated at court, the Sun's son holds the servant's post3.4. Today that reads as the one who carries the load. Its list of things it stands for runs through oil, cloth, journeys, obstacles, servants and bone, and houses are on it too12.karakatva-7. It is also named the giver of sorrow17.18, so a house that holds it is never read as effortless.

Your 4th house is judged for vehicles, relatives, the happiness of your mother, hidden treasure, fields and the house17.4. Today that is the place you live, the car or bike you rely on, the relatives you call, money put away, and land if you ever own some.

Whatever this page says about a parent, a home or savings comes from an old book and is here to think with; signing a lease, buying a place or settling a family matter is a call for you and whoever lives it with you.

The 4th is one of four pillar houses (the kendras), the 1st, 7th and 10th being the others. The verse that ranks them puts each stronger than the one before, so the 4th outranks the 1st and gives way to the 7th and 10th, and the same verse counts Saturn among the hard-acting planets, with Mars ranked the stronger of the two16.6.

From the 4th, Saturn looks straight back at you

Saturn's look is where this placement gets interesting. Every planet watches certain houses from where it stands, and for most of them the fullest look goes to the house directly across the chart9.22. Saturn aims differently. Its strongest gaze lands three houses on and ten houses on from wherever it sits; the seventh gets three quarters of it, the fourth and eighth half, and the fifth and ninth a quarter9.19.

Our guide to aspects in Vedic astrology sets out every planet's pattern.

Count those from your 4th and the full looks fall on your 6th house and on your 1st, your rising sign. That first house is where the body and its shape are judged, your learning, how strong or frail you are, and your nature17.1. So a Saturn at home doesn't stay downstairs. In daily life that might be a seriousness people notice in you early, or a habit of checking every lock before you let yourself relax.

Three quarters of the look goes up to your 10th, judged for royal rank, a sky-linked livelihood, honor, your father, a home abroad, and debts17.10. Home and work sit at the two ends of one line in your chart, and Saturn holds the home end, looking up at the other. With Saturn at the top end instead, Saturn in the 10th house reads the same line from above.

How strong is Saturn in the 4th house?

If you've read that Saturn has a favorite house, by direction it's the 7th. Saturn draws strength from the west3.24, and its directional score grows with its distance from your rising sign, topping out six signs away in the 7th and sinking to its lowest in the 1st42.13. The 4th sits three signs out, halfway along that count, so a 4th-house Saturn holds roughly half its directional strength, nudged up or down by the exact degrees.

Direction is one kind of strength. For how much good Saturn can actually do in your 4th, its sign counts for more, and your rising sign fixes that sign.

The Western Saturn in the 4th, and the Vedic one

If you've looked this placement up before, you've likely met the Western version: a strict or distant parent, a childhood home that felt heavy, a late start on owning property. That reading runs mostly through feeling and early memory.

The Vedic reading is cast in a different zodiac, so first make sure your Saturn sits in the 4th in a Vedic chart; our sidereal vs tropical guide explains why a placement can move.

Then it reads the 4th mostly through things you could point to, and it judges your mother from your Moon, from the 4th sign counted on from it12.32. For her, look at the 4th from your Moon, which may be a different house from the one Saturn holds.

Where the Western reading often treats this Saturn as a lesson to grow through, the Vedic one hands you conditions: its sign, whether it owns the house, who sits with it. Those decide whether the house fills up or wears down. The rest of the Vedic astrology guides follow the same method, one placement at a time.

Libra and Scorpio rising: Saturn owns the house it sits in

Born with Libra rising? Your 4th sign is Capricorn, Saturn's own sign2.19. With Scorpio rising, it's Aquarius, where the first twenty degrees are Saturn's root sign (its moolatrikona) and its last ten count as its own sign3.43.

A 4th-house ruler sitting in its own house, in its own sign, its own navamsa (its sign in the partner chart, the D9) or its exaltation, is read for growing comfort and more vehicles, to the sound of festive conches and drums17.64.

Today: a place that is genuinely yours, a car that's paid off, a home where people come for the good nights. Capricorn always meets the own-sign test; in Aquarius, the last ten degrees do, while the first twenty are the root sign, which this verse doesn't list.

Owning the house is only half of it. Say a house's ruler is combust (too close to the Sun), or keeps company with whoever rules your 6th, 8th or 12th, and the like17.13. Or it fails to look properly at its own house, is in what the text calls a dead, aged or sleeping state, or is otherwise afflicted. Then the joy that house gives is called destroyed, its fruit doubtful17.14.

So measure your Saturn's distance from the Sun, and look at what sits beside it.

One more line fits these two rising signs. If the 4th holds its own ruler together with your rising sign's ruler (Venus for Libra, Mars for Scorpio), a house is gained; if the two rulers are joined with the 6th, 8th or 12th instead, the reverse, and no house comes17.60.

Saturn in the 4th for all twelve rising signs

Start at your rising sign as house one and step forward three signs: you land on your 4th, and on Saturn's sign. Saturn's high point, exaltation, is Libra3.38, and its low point, debilitation, is the opposite sign, Aries3.39. Our page on exalted and debilitated planets explains both ideas. Elsewhere it depends on the sign's ruler: Mercury and Venus are Saturn's friends, Jupiter is neutral, and the Sun, Moon and Mars are its enemies3.47.

How much good Saturn can hand out follows from that sign. Exalted, all of it; root sign, three quarters; own sign, half; a friend's, a quarter3.51. A neutral's sign gives an eighth, while its fall, combustion or an enemy's sign gives none3.52. Then comes an unrelated test: each rising sign has a verse sorting the planets into helpers and troublemakers for people born under it.

Where a row says "on neither list", that rising sign's verse names Saturn neither kind nor hard.

Libra rising is the clearest good row: Saturn at home in the house it rules, and named kind for you. Cancer rising gives the exalted Saturn, with its full share of good by sign.

Taurus rising is the split case: Saturn is the one planet named for royal combinations, yet it sits in an enemy's sign with no share of good by sign, and the verses don't say which test wins. Capricorn rising puts Saturn in its fall, and that opens the hard reading for its years further down.

The hard lines: land, house and the heart

Some years the house costs more than it gives. A lease ends badly, a move comes that you didn't pick, repairs swallow the savings.

The book's catalogue of what planets' years bring has a line for this. From whichever house a hard planet stands fourth, it reads the ruin of land, house and field there, and the loss of cattle36.94. Counted from your rising sign, a 4th-house Saturn is that hard planet. The next line gives each planet its own version, and for Saturn it is a sharp pain in the heart (hridaya-shula)36.95.

These lines read for a stretch of years, not for your whole life, and a pain in the chest is a matter for a doctor, whatever a chart says.

Today the first line can look like a rental that falls through, a family property sold, or a home that needs more than you can give it that year.

The second hard reading needs a condition. Put Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th, in its fall, or combust, and its years read injury from poison, weapons and similar things, lost standing, and deep fear36.49. The verse after adds separation from both parents, hardship for wife and children and those around them, friction with the king, ventures that collapse into loss, and imprisonment36.50.

For a 4th-house Saturn, that means Capricorn rising, where Saturn sits in Aries, or any Saturn burned by standing too near the Sun. Now it could be a move far from your parents, a clash with your boss, or a plan that falls apart. Nothing in this passage turns that reading; it rests on its condition, so check the condition first.

Your nineteen Saturn years with Saturn in the 4th

Saturn runs nineteen years of your life, one of the longer stretches in the cycle35.15. For everything else about them, see the Saturn years guide. With Saturn sitting in your 4th, these are the lines that matter.

The first kind route is a long list of alternatives: Saturn joined with and seen by kind planets, in company with a yogakaraka (a helper planet for good combinations), standing in a pillar house, a 5th or 9th, the 11th, or placed in Pisces or Sagittarius36.51. Your 4th-house Saturn meets the pillar-house condition just by being there.

The years then read a kingdom gained, high spirits, and elephants, horses and clothes in plenty36.52. Today that can be a role that's clearly yours and the drive to see it through.

The second kind route asks for Saturn's sign: its root sign, exaltation, its own sign or a friend's, among other conditions36.45.

Then the years can bring royal honor, prosperity, good fame, money and a love of learned talk36.46, a great king's favor with elephants, vehicles and ornaments, a royal combination and the happiness of commanding an army36.47, and well-being in the household with gains through wife and children36.48. From the table, that's Gemini, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces rising.

Inside the other planets' years, Saturn gets brief seasons of its own, and four of those want Saturn in a pillar house from your rising sign, where yours already stands.

In Mercury's years, the condition list includes a pillar house, and Saturn's season increases well-being at home37.530, with gain of a kingdom, enthusiasm, cattle-wealth at home, a good position and pilgrimage37.531.

During the Sun's years, Saturn's season reads enemies beaten, great happiness, and a little grain and money coming in37.57, and if Saturn is exalted or at home with a friendly planet, weddings and good undertakings37.58.

In the Moon's years, Saturn's turn reads a sacred initiation, marriage and a kingdom's wealth37.120.

In Rahu's years, a pillar-house Saturn is among the ways in37.249, and the season brings a vehicle, employment, favor from people in power, weddings and good works37.250. It adds skill at laying out gardens and building water tanks, and a growing herd of cattle37.251. Today, gardens and tanks can be a yard you plant or a place you fix up.

Which 4th-house Saturn is yours?

Four checks sort your version from the others.

  1. Is Saturn in its fall or near the Sun? Capricorn rising puts it in Aries, and a Saturn close to the Sun is combust; either brings the hard reading for its years36.49.
  2. Does Saturn rule your 4th? With Libra or Scorpio rising it does, and a 4th-house ruler resting in its own sign there is read for growing comfort and vehicles17.64.
  3. What shares the house? If the Sun sits with Saturn in your 4th, and your Moon is in the 9th and Mars in the 11th, the text reads gains of cows, buffaloes and the like17.69, which today can be assets that grow while you sleep.
  4. What is the 4th from your Moon? That is where this book looks for your mother12.32, and it can tell a different story from the house Saturn holds.

If Venus or the Moon shares the house, Venus in the 4th house and Moon in the 4th house add their part.

None of these settles the chart alone. A Saturn in its fall can sit beside a kind planet; an owned house can still hold a combust ruler. Your free personal reading reads the whole chart you were born with and sends back a page written about you.

Questions to sit with

  • What did you learn to keep running at home before anyone asked you to?
  • Where in your life does comfort feel earned, and where would you like it to come easier?
  • When you picture a home that is fully yours, what's in it that you don't have yet?
  • Who do you hold steady for, and who holds steady for you?

Saturn in the 4th house: what people ask

Is Saturn in the 4th house good or bad?

Neither, until you know its sign and whether it rules the house. Exalted for Cancer rising, it gives its full share of good3.51; at home for Libra rising, it is named kind as well16.26; in its fall for Capricorn rising, its years read hard36.49.

Does Saturn in the 4th mean a difficult relationship with your mother?

This book reads your mother from the 4th sign counted from your Moon12.32, so Saturn in your 4th isn't the whole answer. Look at that house first.

What does Saturn in the 4th house mean for marriage?

From the 4th, Saturn gives half its look to your 7th9.19. In its kind years the text reads gains through your partner36.48; in its hard years, trouble for your partner36.50. The verses on this page give no standing marriage reading for it beyond that.

Which planet is not good in the 4th house?

The years catalogue reads any hard planet fourth from a house as damage to land, house and field36.94. It names Saturn's version as a pain in the heart, the Sun's as the king's anger, and Rahu's as loss of all one's goods with fear of poison and thieves36.95.

What about Saturn transiting the 4th house?

This page reads Saturn where it stood when you were born. Saturn moving through your 4th today is a transit, a separate question.

What if my Saturn in the 4th is retrograde?

None of the verses this page draws on speaks to a retrograde Saturn, so we don't read one here.

Are there remedies for Saturn in the 4th?

None of the verses this page draws on names one, and we don't sell any.
