Sun in 10th house in Vedic astrology: career, name, father

Sun in the 10th house in Vedic astrology: why it peaks in directional strength here, what it reads for work, honor and father, and all 12 rising signs.

The Sun in the 10th house, the top of the chart, where its directional strength reaches its high point. An illustration of the placement, not your chart.

The Sun in your 10th house in Vedic astrology puts the planet of authority at the top of your chart, in the house of work, honor, rank and your father. In the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), the centuries-old Sanskrit text this page reads from, the 10th is also where the Sun's directional strength climbs as high as it goes. Its sign then decides how much good strength it keeps there.

Still, a single planet in a single house is only a slice of you. Your Sun's sign, whatever shares the house with it and the planet whose years you're in right now can each bend what this placement does. Your free personal reading takes in all of your chart at once and gives you one page written about you.

Why the 10th is where your Sun stands tallest

Think of the person in your office whose name everyone knows, the one people ask first when a decision has to be made. In a birth chart, that seat at the top has a house number, and the 10th is where your Sun sits.

Every planet has a compass point that suits it, and for the Sun it is the south3.24. A later chapter makes that something you can count: take the Sun's distance from your 4th house, count it in signs up to six, turn it into degrees and divide by three42.13.

The 10th sits six signs from the 4th, which puts a 10th-house Sun at or close to the top of that scale. The 4th, straight below, is the bottom, as our page on the Sun in the 4th house explains.

Directional strength is one score among several. It tells you your Sun has position on its side. It doesn't tell you whether the Sun's sign is a friendly one, and that part comes from the rising-sign table further down.

The six things your 10th house holds

Most of us would sum up the 10th as "career." The verse gives six: rule (kingship, in its words), honor, the father, debt, living in a foreign land, and what it calls a livelihood of the sky17.10.

Read for your week, kingship is how much say you have, whether that's running a team or running your own small business. Honor is your reputation at work, what people say about your work when you've left the room. Living abroad can be a job that moves you to another country. Debt is what you owe, from a student loan to a favor. The verse leaves its sky livelihood unexplained.

Now put the Sun in that house. The text compares the Sun and the Moon to kings3.3, so a 10th-house Sun is a king planet sitting in the house of kingship. Today that can show as a pull toward being the one in charge, and a working life where people can see what you do.

The Sun also looks straight across the chart. A planet looks with full force at the seventh house from itself9.22; counted from your 10th, that is your 4th, the house of home. The 4th and the 10th are the two houses the text calls special houses of happiness16.1. The verses in this set stop there and give no separate reading of what the Sun's look does to your home.

Is the Sun the 10th house's significator?

It's one of the first things people ask about this placement. In the book's list of house significators, one planet per house in order, the 1st goes to the Sun and the 10th goes to Mercury12.37. We searched the whole text for a verse naming the Sun as the 10th house's significator, in English and in the Sanskrit word for significator beside the Sun's names, and found none.

That takes nothing away from your 10th-house Sun. Its directional strength and its sign still carry the reading. It only means that any rule making the Sun the 10th's significator comes from outside this book.

Your father and the Sun at the top of your chart

If you're asking what this placement says about your dad, two rules overlap. Your father is one of the things the 10th is read for17.10, and the Sun is the planet his matters are judged from17.62. Yours puts the father's planet inside a father's house.

A second rule counts the father from the 9th house measured from the Sun12.32. Count nine houses on from your 10th, starting with the 10th as one, and you land on your 6th. That house, and whatever sits in it, is where this rule sends you for your father's story. No verse in this set reads a 10th-house Sun as good or bad for a father on its own.

Everything on this page is how the BPHS reads a chart, offered for reflection. It forecasts nothing about your family, your health or your money, and choices about a job, a contract or a doctor's visit belong to you and the people who know your situation.

The Western 10th-house Sun, and what the Vedic one adds

In a Western chart, a 10th-house Sun usually means ambition, a public image and a career that becomes part of who you are. Most of that sits easily beside the verses above.

The Vedic reading layers more on. Direction gives the Sun a score, and the 10th is where that score tops out. The sign it occupies gives it a grade, anywhere from complete to empty. Your rising sign decides whether the Sun counts as a helpful or a difficult planet for you. The 10th is also read for your father, for living abroad and for debt, three things a Western 10th rarely carries.

Before you look up your row, open your Vedic chart, not your Western one. Vedic astrology counts signs on the sidereal zodiac, which can move your Sun back a sign, and now and then into a neighboring house. The sidereal vs tropical guide explains the gap.

All 12 rising signs: which 10th-house Sun you have

Count your rising sign as one and go on to ten: that sign is your 10th house, so your rising sign fixes the sign your Sun is in (our guide to the Vedic rising sign shows how to find it). That sign decides how much good strength the Sun keeps.

The scale runs from full when the Sun is exalted, down through three quarters in its root sign (moolatrikona), half at home in its own sign and a quarter with a friend3.51, to an eighth with a neutral and zero in an enemy's sign or in its fall3.52. The Sun's friends are the Moon, Mars and Jupiter; Mercury is neutral; Venus and Saturn are enemies3.44.

The last column gives the verdict on the Sun for each rising sign. Where that verse leaves the Sun out, the table says so.

"Yoga-maker" is our word for the verse's yoga-karaka: the planet it singles out as the one that forms a royal combination (a raja yoga) for that rising sign.

Two rows stand out. Cancer rising gives the Sun its exaltation, the most good strength the scale allows. Scorpio rising gives it its own sign, and there the Sun also rules your 10th, since Leo is the Sun's sign. Capricorn rising is the hard mirror: the Sun in its fall, at the top of the chart.

Six Sun years from the top of the chart

In the order of planetary years the Sun comes first35.14, and it runs for six years35.15. When the Sun is strong, its years bring children (the verse says sons), a sharp mind and wisdom, rising authority, learning, money, fame, courage and happiness; when it is weak, they bring fire danger, illness, lost money, plans that fail, fear of displeasing those in power, disturbance and affliction36.1. A worry about illness belongs with a doctor.

For good Sun years, one verse sets three conditions together:

  • The sign: its root sign, its own sign, its exaltation or the exact point of exaltation.
  • The house: one of the four angles of the chart, at the rising point, the bottom, the setting point and the top (houses 1, 4, 7 and 10, so yours counts); one of the two that make a triangle with your rising sign (the 5th and the 9th); or the 11th.
  • The company: the planets ruling your 9th and your 10th, joined with it36.2.

A 10th-house Sun already meets the house part. A Cancer-rising Sun in Aries meets the sign part too, and the company it still needs is Jupiter and Mars, the rulers of your Pisces 9th and Aries 10th.

With Scorpio rising, the Sun stands in Leo and is itself the ruler of your 10th, and your 9th is Cancer, ruled by the Moon2.11. If your Moon shares the house, the Sun is joined with your 9th's ruler, and for Scorpio rising the Sun and Moon together are named as yoga-makers16.28. The verse doesn't say how the Sun counts as its own 10th-house company.

When the Sun has strength, stands in its own divisions (its varga) and is joined with strength, its years bring great happiness and gains of wealth36.3.

The strong Sun's list goes on: the favor of whoever rules, wealth, command of an army, clothes, vehicles and happiness36.6. Joined with your 2nd house's ruler, prosperity; joined with the ruler of vehicles, three kinds of them36.5. For today, the ruler's favor can be the manager who backs you, command can be the team you lead, and vehicles can be the car the job finally pays for.

When a 10th-house Sun reads hard

The hard reading starts with the Sun's own condition. The weak list is long: the Sun in its fall, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or feeble, or with malefic planets, or sharing a house with Rahu or Ketu, or with whichever planets rule the 6th, 8th and 12th36.7.

A 10th-house Sun is never in those hard houses, but with Capricorn rising it is in its fall, and Rahu, Ketu or a hard planet can share the 10th with any Sun.

For a Sun that meets those conditions, the years read as heavy affliction, wealth and grain destroyed, a ruler's anger, travel abroad, and money taken as a ruler's penalty36.8. Read for now, that is six years when a boss, an agency or a court can turn against you, and money leaks out.

A later verse in the same passage adds the paternal family as a source of worry, and people being hostile, and then it turns. If kind planets aspect the Sun, some happiness comes in the middle of those years; if a hard planet aspects it, only the hard results are told36.11. So with a fallen 10th-house Sun, the aspects on it settle which half applies.

The house has its own test, run on its ruler. Combust (lost in the Sun's glare), or sitting with the rulers of the 6th, 8th or 12th and the like17.13; or not casting a proper look on its own house, or dead, aged, asleep or afflicted: any of these, and the house's happiness is to be called destroyed, with what it bears left doubtful17.14.

If your 10th's ruler sits right beside your Sun in the 10th, it can be combust, and this reading lands on your work and name. A separate verse says that when the 10th's ruler has no strength, a defect in your vocation is to be read17.211.

Four checks for the Sun in your 10th

Pull up your Vedic chart and run through these. Each one can change which of the readings above is yours.

  1. The sign. Look up your rising sign in the table above. An exalted Sun keeps all its good strength3.51; a fallen one or an enemy's keeps none3.52.
  2. Who shares the house. If the ruler of your 10th sits close beside the Sun, it may be combust17.13, which brings in the hard reading of the house17.14. If Rahu or Ketu is there, that is one of the weak-Sun conditions for its years36.7.
  3. Your 10th's ruler. Find which planet rules your 10th and how strong it is. Without strength, the text reads a defect in vocation17.211.
  4. Your years. Which planet's years are you living in, the Sun's six or someone else's? For a weak Sun, look at who aspects it, since a kind planet aspecting it lets some happiness in partway through36.11.

Directional strength is nearly the same for every 10th-house Sun, so the differences between two people with this placement come from everything else on this list. Your free personal reading begins with your own birth details and weighs all of it at once.

Questions to sit with

  • Where do people already look to you to decide, even when no one gave you the title?
  • What do you owe right now, in money or in favors, and how much of your work is shaped by it?
  • If your Sun is in a sign where it keeps little strength, where does your sense of standing come from instead?
  • What does your 6th house hold, and does it fit the story of your dad's family?

Sun in the 10th house: short answers

Is Sun in 10th house good or bad?

By direction, it's the Sun's best house42.13. By sign, it ranges from full strength with Cancer rising, where the Sun is exalted, to none with Capricorn rising, where it is in its fall: the share of good strength runs from all of it3.51 down to nothing3.52.

Does the Sun in the 10th mean fame?

The 10th is read for honor and rank17.10, and a strong Sun's years list fame among their results36.1. Neither verse reads fame from the placement by itself.

What career does a 10th-house Sun suit?

The verses on this placement don't name a profession. They speak of authority, honor and the favor of those in charge, which today can read as leading a team or being backed by the people above you.

Is the Sun the karaka of the 10th house?

Not in this text's list, which gives the 10th to Mercury and the 1st to the Sun12.37.

How does the Sun read in the next houses?

One house on, the same planet reads differently in Sun in the 11th house, and two on, in Sun in the 12th house. Other planets at the top of the chart: the Moon in the 10th and Saturn in the 10th, with the whole house covered in the 10th house guide. The learn hub has the rest.

What does a 10th-house Sun say about my spouse or marriage?

The verses on this placement don't read a partner from it, so we don't either.

Is the Sun in the 10th different in a woman's chart, or when retrograde?

The verses on this placement make no distinction by gender, and none of them speaks of a retrograde Sun.

Are there remedies for a 10th-house Sun?

None in the verses on this placement, and we don't sell or suggest stones or rituals.

Now the chapter on the results of the dashas: first, by the Vimshottari system, the results of the Sun's mahadasha. An excellent (strong) dasha of the Sun brings sons, intelligence, wisdom, elevation of authority/status, gain of knowledge, wealth, fame, valor, and happiness, by the grace of the Lord. A malefic (weak) dasha of the Sun brings failure in undertakings, loss of wealth, illness, fear from royal displeasure, disturbances, affliction, and danger from fire.
