Jupiter in 1st house in Vedic astrology: good or bad?
Jupiter in the 1st house in Vedic astrology: why the rising sign is Jupiter's strongest direction, what each of the 12 signs changes, and its 16 years.

Jupiter in the 1st house, the rising sign: the house the text reads for your body, your knowledge and your character. An illustration of the placement, not your chart.
Jupiter in the 1st house is good news in Vedic astrology, and the rising sign is the one house where Jupiter's directional strength peaks42.13. How good depends on the sign that is rising: in five of the twelve, that sign leaves Jupiter's kind strength at nothing or close to it, and that changes the reading a great deal.
Jupiter in your 1st is one placement, though, and your chart holds eight other planets. The one sharing your rising sign, where your Moon sits and whose years you're living in right now can all tilt the story. Your free personal reading puts those pieces together and writes them up as a page about you.
What Jupiter in your 1st looks like day to day
Picture the friend people ask before they sign a lease or quit a job. They don't always have the answer, but they've read about it, and they say it calmly. That is close to how a centuries-old Sanskrit text, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, pictures Jupiter: intelligent and learned in every branch of knowledge3.16. It names Jupiter as the giver of knowledge and happiness3.2, and it seats Jupiter at the royal court as one of the two ministers, with Venus3.3. Today a minister looks like the adviser, the person in the group chat whose opinion settles things.
Your rising sign is the house of you in the most literal sense. It is read for your body and its form, your knowledge, your strength, your character and your constitution17.1. No single verse says "Jupiter in the 1st gives this body". The reading comes from putting two pieces side by side: the 1st house describes your body, and Jupiter is pictured as large-bodied and tawny, with striking hair and eyes3.16. Read together, Jupiter here tends to show in how you look and carry yourself, often as a frame with some presence to it.
Two verses speak to this placement plainly. Jupiter in an angle of the chart (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) gives "royal marks"17.28. Your 1st house is one of those angles, so this verse applies to every Jupiter in the rising sign. Royal marks were signs of distinction on the body. Today that can look like a bearing that makes people defer to you before you've said much.
The second verse says that with Jupiter in an angle, the person is wealthy and beloved of kings17.25. The verse also discusses longevity here; we leave that out. The king's favor today can be a boss who backs you, or a name that opens doors in your field. These readings are offered for reflection; they are not a forecast or financial advice, and real decisions about money, health or family belong with an adviser, a doctor or the people involved.
Why the rising sign is Jupiter's best house
Some people seem most like themselves the second they walk into a room. Jupiter is like that in your 1st. Every planet has a direction where it is strongest, and Jupiter's is the east3.24. In a birth chart the east is the horizon where your rising sign comes up, so the 1st house is Jupiter's home ground. The arithmetic agrees: Jupiter's directional strength is counted as its distance from the 7th house, which makes it greatest at the rising point and smallest in the 7th42.13.
That strength is separate from the sign. Jupiter can have full directional strength in your 1st and still sit in a sign that gives it little else to work with (the table below shows which).
Jupiter rising also turns up in Parashara's section on misfortunes and what undoes them. A strong Jupiter in the rising sign clears the accumulated trouble by itself5.45. Any one of Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle clears the whole of the affliction, too5.44. And if a hard planet sits in your 4th house, the house of home, Jupiter in an angle or a trine offsets it, and the birth favors both sides of the family5.51.
How the Vedic reading differs from your Western chart
In Western astrology, Jupiter in the 1st is usually read as luck, optimism and a big, open presence: the person who walks in and the room relaxes. The Vedic reading keeps the presence and adds two things. It says why the placement is strong (the direction), and it makes everything hang on the sign, which a Western reading often skips.
There's also a chance your Jupiter isn't in the 1st at all once you switch charts. Vedic astrology measures the zodiac against the fixed stars, so every planet lands about 24 degrees earlier than in a Western chart, a gap caused by the slow wobble of Earth's axis called axial precession. Your rising sign moves back by the same amount. A rising sign in the last few degrees of a Western sign stays in it; anything earlier slips into the sign before. Our guide to your Vedic rising sign shows you how to find yours, so check that first.
Many pages on this placement name "Hamsa yoga" when Jupiter rises in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer. We searched all 4,197 verses of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra for Hamsa, for the Sanskrit हंस and for mahapurusha, the family of yogas it belongs to. None of them sets out that yoga's conditions or what it means for you. The name turns up once, in passing, in a verse on calculating longevity; we leave that out, and it attaches no rule to the name. What the verses give for those three signs is strength, and the next section shows how much.
Jupiter rising in each of the 12 signs
Two people can both have Jupiter rising and get very different readings, and the sign is why. A planet's kind strength is graded by whose sign it sits in. In its exaltation sign the strength is full; in its moolatrikona, a special stretch of its own sign, three quarters; in its own sign, half; in a friend's sign, a quarter3.51. In a neutral's sign it gets an eighth, and in its debilitation sign, an enemy's sign, or when it is burnt up by sitting too close to the Sun (combust), it gets nothing3.52.
For Jupiter, the Sun, the Moon and Mars are friends, Saturn is neutral, and Mercury and Venus are enemies3.46. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer3.38 and debilitated in Capricorn, the sign opposite3.39. Jupiter in your 1st means Jupiter sits in your rising sign, so here is what each rising sign gives it:
The table uses Jupiter's fixed friendships, and your own chart can shift them one step. Planets also become friends by where they sit from each other3.48, and a fixed enemy that is a friend in your chart counts as a neutral3.50. So a Taurus or Libra rising can lift Jupiter from nothing to an eighth, depending on where Venus is.
If you have Sagittarius or Pisces rising, one more verse is yours. When Jupiter sits in its own sign as the rising sign and Mercury and Mars join it or look at it, the verse reads a lord of wealth24.10. Both planets are named, so one alone doesn't meet it.
If you have Capricorn rising, your Jupiter sits in its debilitation sign with no kind strength3.52. The same is true of a Jupiter that is combust, close enough to the Sun to vanish in its glare. What that can mean shows up when Jupiter's season arrives inside the Moon's years: if Jupiter is debilitated or combust37.113, or joined with malefics (the planets counted as hard), there is inauspicious action, loss of a guru, of sons and the like, loss of position, mental sorrow, and "certainly" sudden quarrels37.114.
Today that can look like a mentor who drops away, a role you lose, a stretch where advice you trusted turns out wrong and arguments flare out of nowhere. It describes one season, and only for a Jupiter in that condition. None of the verses here speaks to softening it. What can change the picture is the rest of your chart.
A second hard verse is about children. If Rahu, Venus and Jupiter all sit in the rising sign, the Moon is joined with Saturn, and the ruler of the rising sign is in the 8th house, the verse reads an absence of a son, from a departed spirit's curse, in the verse's terms34.97. All three conditions have to hold, so this is rare. Read today, it points to difficulty around having children, and only when all three conditions meet.
Your Jupiter years
Jupiter rules sixteen years of a life. In the order Parashara gives, those years come fifth, after the Sun's, the Moon's, Mars's and Rahu's35.14,35.15, and where your own run starts depends on where your Moon was the minute you were born. Our guide to Jupiter's years walks through all sixteen.
The conditions for good Jupiter years are a list: Jupiter in its exaltation or own sign, situated in an angle, the 11th or a trine, or in its moolatrikona or the 11th, or in its exaltation or own navamsha36.38. Your 1st house is an angle, so the placement itself is on the list, and Cancer, Sagittarius and Pisces rising add the sign conditions as well.
When the years go well, the verses read gain of a kingdom, great happiness, royal honor and renown, horses and elephants, and the worship of gods36.39. They add happiness through wife and children, vehicles and clothes, success in rites, and the study of philosophy36.40, with a king's favor that brings what you were aiming for, a palanquin and well-being36.41. Swap the court for your life and it can look like a promotion with your name on it, a car and a wardrobe upgrade, a class that rearranges how you think, a household that feels full.
Jupiter's seasons inside other planets' years
Jupiter also gets a shorter season inside every other planet's years. Three of those seasons have their own lines for a Jupiter in an angle:
In the Moon's years: when Jupiter in an angle or trine from the rising sign is also in its own sign, the 11th, or its exaltation, its season brings gain of a kingdom and great celebration37.110. It adds clothes, ornaments, jewelry, royal favor and wealth, and conception through the grace of your chosen deity37.111, plus splendid undertakings and a home favored by fortune37.112. With Jupiter rising, only Cancer, Sagittarius and Pisces meet the sign condition.
In Rahu's years, Jupiter in an angle or trine from the rising sign is enough37.237. The season brings gain of position, a steadier mind, enemies beaten and comfort from a ruler's favor37.238, and growth day by day "like the moon in the bright fortnight"37.239.
In Mercury's years, again an angle or trine from the rising sign qualifies37.520. The season brings bodily comfort, money, royal favor, wedding celebrations and sweet food every day37.521, with listening to the old stories, devotion to gods and teachers, and charity37.522.
Which Jupiter-rising chart is yours?
Open your Vedic chart and make four checks:
Find your rising sign in the table above. Cancer gives Jupiter full strength3.51; Capricorn leaves it none3.52.
Look for your Moon. If it sits in your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, Jupiter is in an angle from it, which is called Gajakesari20.1. Its reading is a radiant, wealthy, intelligent and virtuous person who wins a ruler's favor20.2.
See what shares your 1st. Rahu with Jupiter there sends you to the hard verse above34.97; Mercury and Mars with a Sagittarius or Pisces rising send you to the wealth verse24.10.
Find the ruler of your rising sign. If it sits in your 5th house and the ruler of the 5th sits in your 1st, the Jupiter in your angle completes a verse that reads many sons, today simply many children34.107.
Each check moves the reading, and none of them settles it alone. That is the case for reading the whole chart at once. Your free personal reading starts from your birth minute and writes about you from your whole chart.
Questions to sit with
When people come to you for advice, what are they actually asking for?
Where has being "the one who knows" helped you, and where has it kept you from asking?
Who backed you early, the way a ruler backs a minister?
What would you study for its own sake if no one were grading it?
Jupiter in the 1st house: your questions answered
Is Jupiter in the 1st house good or bad?
Good in most charts. It sits where its directional strength peaks42.13, but in Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra or Capricorn rising its sign strength is nothing or close to it, and that is the case to check.
Does Jupiter in the 1st house make you lucky?
The verses don't speak of luck. A strong Jupiter in the rising sign clears accumulated affliction by itself5.45.
Does Jupiter in the 1st give Hamsa yoga?
Not by any rule in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. We searched every verse: none gives its conditions or its reading, and the name appears only once, in passing.
How does Jupiter in the 1st affect marriage?
None of the verses for this placement speaks about a partner directly. The nearest is Jupiter's own years, which bring happiness through wife and children when Jupiter is strong36.40.
Does Jupiter in the 1st make you gain weight?
None of these verses mentions weight. Jupiter's portrait is large-bodied3.16. That portrait describes the planet, and a question about your body belongs with a doctor.
What careers suit Jupiter in the 1st house?
The verses name no job. They seat Jupiter at court as a minister3.3, and in good Jupiter years a king's favor brings what you were aiming for36.41. Today that can read as advising or teaching, work where people come to you for judgment.
Which rising sign is best for Jupiter in the 1st?
Cancer, where Jupiter is exalted and its strength is full3.51, then Sagittarius up to 10 degrees3.42.
Is Jupiter in your 1st?
Check your chart: is Jupiter in your 1st house? Your reading takes your birth date, time and place and writes back about you as a whole person.
The verses
From the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, with our plain-English reading. Where a verse is in the public-domain Bombay 1899 printing, the page link opens the scan, so you can read it there yourself.
Subtract the 4th house from the Sun and Mars, the 7th from Jupiter and Mercury, the lagna from Saturn, and the 10th (midheaven) from Venus and the Moon; if the remainder exceeds 6 signs, subtract from 12, convert to degrees, and divide by 3 — this gives the dig-bala (directional strength).
Mercury and Jupiter are strong in the east; the Sun and Mars in the south; Saturn in the west; and Venus and the Moon in the north — the directional strengths of the grahas.
In its own exaltation, a graha's auspicious strength is full; in its moolatrikona, it is full less a quarter; in its own sign it is half; in a friend's sign it is declared to be only a quarter.
In a neutral's sign it is declared to be an eighth; it is void in debilitation, combustion, or an enemy's sign. Likewise the wise should state malefic/inauspicious strength in the reverse order.
To Jupiter: Mercury and Venus are enemies, Saturn is neutral, and the others are friends. To Venus: Mercury and Saturn are friends, Mars and Jupiter are neutral, and the rest are enemies.
अजो वृषो मृगः कन्या कुलीरझषतौलिकाः । सूर्यादीनां क्रमादेतास्तुङ्गसंज्ञाः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥३८॥
Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces, and Libra are declared, in order, to be the signs of exaltation (uchcha) of the Sun and the other grahas.
The precise degree of exaltation for each graha is given by a series of word-numerals; the sign of debilitation (nicha) is the seventh from the exaltation sign, at the same degree already stated (the exact numeric values encoded by the word-numerals in this verse are not fully certain without further cross-reference).
Dwelling in the east, of royal kinship, roaming the mountains, of rajo-guna, rising by its back (prishthodaya), and of fiery nature — the sign Aries is ruled by Mars.
White, ruled by Venus, long-bodied, quadruped, strong by night, dwelling in the south, domesticated, of the merchant class, earthy, female, and rising by its back — this is Taurus.
शीर्षोदयी नृमिथुनं सगदं च सवीणकम् । प्रत्यक्स्वामी द्विपाद्रात्रिबली ग्राम्याग्रगोऽनिली ॥९॥
Rising by its head, depicted as a pair of humans — one bearing a mace, the other a vina — ruled by Mercury (whose direction is west), biped, strong by night, foremost among domesticated creatures, and of airy nature — this is Gemini.
Leo, ruled by the Sun, is of sattva-guna, quadruped, of the kshatriya class, strong, rising by its head, large-bodied, pale/tawny, and strong in the earlier part of the day.
Associated with grain and fire, of the vaishya class, of variegated color, windy (restless) in nature; a maiden, joined with tamas, of youthful disposition, and ruled by Mercury.
Head-rising, endowed with strength by day, of the shudra class, of rajo-guna; ruled by Venus, lord of the west, of medium body, and biped — this is Tula (Libra).
Head-rising, small-bodied, many-legged, of the brahmin class, strong, associated with the benefics, strong by day, tawny-colored, moving through water and earth; abundant in bristles and extremely sharp-limbed — this is Vrishchika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars.
Mercury's moolatrikona extends for a further five degrees beyond its exaltation zone, its own sign following after; Jupiter's moolatrikona extends to ten degrees of Sagittarius, its own sign thereafter.
Venus's moolatrikona spans fifteen degrees of Libra, the rest of Libra being its own sign; Saturn's moolatrikona spans twenty degrees of Aquarius, the rest being its own sign.
BPHS 2.24
सुराचार्याधिपश्चास्य राशीनां गदितं मया । त्रिंशद्भागात्मकः स्थूलसूक्ष्माकरफलाय च ॥२४॥
Its ruler is Jupiter (suracharya, teacher of the gods). Thus have the natures of the signs been declared; each consists of thirty degrees, for the purpose of both gross and subtle results.
Grahas occupying certain houses relative to one another (per the scheme given) are to be known as temporary (tatkalika) friends at that time; in the remaining houses they are temporary non-friends.
When enmity and friendship combine, the result is neutral; when enemy and enemy combine, it becomes a 'great enemy' (adhishatru). Thus the wise describe five grades of relationship (panchadha-maitri) among the grahas.
Through the great king's favor, one's desired aim is accomplished, bringing happiness. But if Jupiter is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th, or debilitated, or combust —
— or joined with malefics, there is inauspicious action, loss of guru, sons, and the like; loss of position, mental sorrow, and certainly sudden quarrels.
BPHS 34.97
लग्ने राहौ च शुक्रेज्ये चन्द्रे मन्दयुते तथा। लग्नेशे मृत्युराशिस्थे प्रेतशापात्सुतक्षयः।।९७।।
If Rahu, Venus, and Jupiter are in the lagna, the Moon is joined with Saturn, and the lagna-lord is in the 8th house (mrityu-rashi), there is absence of a son by a preta's curse.
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu (tamas), Jupiter (vakpati), Saturn, Mercury (manda-chandra-ja), Ketu, and Venus — these, in order, should be known as the dasha-lords.
[Their dasha periods, encoded as number-words, are, in order:] six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven, and twenty years, respectively held [as the dasha-years for Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and Venus].
Now the results of Jupiter's dasha: when Jupiter is in its own exaltation or own sign, situated in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or in its mulatrikona or the 11th, or in an exaltation-navamsha or its own navamsha —
[Such a dasha brings] gain of kingdom, great happiness, royal honor and renown; being endowed with elephants and horses, and the worship of gods and brahmins.
दारपुत्रादि सौख्यं च वाहनाम्बरलाभदम्। यज्ञादिकर्मसिद्धिः स्याद्वेदान्तश्रवणादिकम्।।४०।।
Happiness through wife and children, and the gain of vehicles and garments [occur]; success in yajnas and other rites, and the hearing and study of Vedanta and the like, come about.
महाराज प्रसादेन इष्टसिद्धिः सुखावहा। आंदोलिकादिलाभश्च कल्याणं च महत्सुखम्।।४१।।
Through the great king's favor, the accomplishment of desired ends brings happiness; the gain of a palanquin and the like, well-being, and great happiness [occur].
चन्द्रस्यान्तर्गते जीवे लग्नात्केन्द्रत्रिकोणगे। स्वगेहे लाभस्वोच्चे वा राज्यलाभं महोत्सवम्।।११०।।
In Moon's mahadasha, Jupiter's antardasha: when Jupiter, in a kendra or trikona from the lagna, is in its own house, the 11th, or its own exaltation, its antardasha gives gain of kingdom and great celebration.
There is gain of garments, ornaments, and jewelry, royal favor, and wealth; through the grace of one's chosen deity, the fruit of conception (garbhadhana) and the like.
There are auspicious, splendid undertakings, and the household is graced by Lakshmi's favorable glance; there is royal patronage, and wealth accompanied by cows, elephants, and horses.
In Rahu's mahadasha, Jupiter's antardasha: when Jupiter is in a kendra or trikona from the lagna, or in its own exaltation, own sign, exaltation-navamsha, or own navamsha —
— there is gain of position, steadiness of mind, destruction of enemies, great happiness; one enjoys great comfort brought by royal favor.
BPHS 37.239
दिने दिने वृद्धिरपि शुक्लपक्षे शशी यथा। वाहनादि धनं भूरि गृहे गोधनसंकुलम्।।२३९।।
There is increase day by day, like the moon in the bright fortnight; abundant wealth in the form of vehicles and the like, and the household abounds in cattle-wealth.
BPHS 37.520
बुधस्यान्तर्गते जीवे लग्नात्केन्द्रत्रिकोणगे। स्वोच्चे वा स्वर्क्षगे वापि लाभे वा धनराशिगे।।५२।।
In Mercury's mahadasha, Jupiter's antardasha: when Jupiter is in a kendra or trikona from the lagna, or in its own exaltation or own sign, or in the 11th or 2nd house —
गोमहिष्यादिलाभं च पुराणश्रवणादिकम्। देवतागुरुभक्तिश्च दानधर्ममखादिकम्।।५४।।
There is gain of cows, buffaloes, and the like, listening to the Puranas, devotion to gods and one's guru, and charity, righteousness, and sacrificial rites.
If Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon, that is called Gajakesari-yoga; or if the Moon — itself not debilitated or combust — is aspected by Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury, themselves not debilitated or combust, that too is Gajakesari.
If the lagna-lord is in the 5th house, the 5th lord takes refuge in the lagna, and Jupiter is in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or trikona (5th, 9th) house, many sons should be declared.
