Venus in the 1st house, your rising sign: the house the text reads for your body, its form and your character. An illustration of the placement, not your chart.
Venus in the 1st house in Vedic astrology starts from a good place: Venus sits in one of the chart's four corners, which the text reads for "royal marks"17.28. Whether it's good for you comes down to your rising sign. For four rising signs the book counts Venus as kind for the whole chart, for one it is even, and for the other seven it is hard.
Venus rising is one line on a full page. A Sun right beside it, a Moon in a difficult spot, or the years of another planet can each change how it plays out. Your free personal reading takes your whole chart at once and writes what it finds as a page about you.
Does Venus in the 1st house make you attractive?
Maybe you read that Venus rising means good looks, then looked in the mirror and weren't convinced. Here is what the book actually holds. It reads your 1st house for your body and its form, your knowledge, your strength and weakness, your character and your constitution17.1. Separately, it pictures Venus as content, with an excellent and beautiful body, fine eyes, curly hair and a poet's gift3.17.
No verse joins the two. We searched the whole text, in English and in the Sanskrit, for a line that says Venus in the rising sign gives a beautiful body, and found none. The beauty reading is built from those two parts: a beautiful planet in the house of the body lends the body some of its look. It's a reasonable step, and still a step, so it can be no stronger than your Venus is.
Venus's strength swings a long way with its sign. In an enemy's sign or its debilitation sign, or when it sits too close to the Sun (combust), its kind strength is void3.52. If that's your Venus, the face in the mirror doesn't disprove anything. The table further down shows which rising signs leave Venus with little or nothing to give.
What Venus rising looks like in your week
Think of the friend whose taste everyone trusts: the one asked what to wear to the thing on Saturday. The book makes Venus the giver of vigor and vitality3.2, and seats it at the royal court as one of the two ministers, beside Jupiter3.3. A minister today is the person who can talk to anyone at the table and leave both sides feeling heard.
Venus is also the planet the text reads for the good things in a life: a fine wife (today, a partner), vehicles, goods and ornaments17.62. With Venus in the house of you, those tend to show on you. Today that can look like the jacket people keep asking about, or the care you take with how a room looks.
Your 1st is one of the four corners of the chart (the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, called kendras), and two verses speak to every Venus in a corner. One gives royal marks17.28. Those were signs of distinction on the body; read today, it's a presence people register before you've said much. The other reads a person who is wealthy in the world and beloved of kings17.25. That verse also touches on longevity; we leave that out. A king's favor now can be a manager who goes to bat for you, or a client who keeps coming back.
Take lines like these as the book's readings to reflect on, not as a forecast or advice. When money, your health or your family is really at stake, talk it through with a qualified professional or the people it touches.
One more verse belongs to every Venus rising. In the chapter on afflictions at birth and their undoing, any one of Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in a corner of the chart clears the whole of the affliction5.44.
Venus in the 1st house: Vedic vs Western
In a Western chart, Venus in the 1st is read as charm and good looks, the easy social face, sometimes a need to be liked. The Vedic reading keeps the charm. It adds two things a Western reading tends to skip: a measured strength for Venus in this house, and a verdict that turns on your rising sign.
The strength first. Every planet has a direction where it is strongest, and Venus's is the north3.24. The arithmetic counts Venus's directional strength from the 10th house: it is nothing at the 10th, the top of the chart, and greatest at the 4th, opposite it42.13. That full-strength house has its own page, Venus in the 4th house. Your 1st sits a quarter of the way round from the 10th, so Venus rising holds half its directional strength, a solid middle.
Before any of this applies, check that your Venus is really in your 1st. Vedic astrology measures the signs against the fixed stars, about 24 degrees behind the Western zodiac, a gap left by the slow wobble of Earth's axis called axial precession. Your planets and your rising sign all move back by that amount. Late degrees of a sign stay in it, while earlier ones fall into the sign before, so your rising sign can change and Venus can land in a different house. Our guide to finding your Vedic rising sign walks you through it, and sidereal vs tropical astrology explains the two zodiacs.
Venus rising in each of the 12 signs
If you've compared notes with someone else who has Venus rising and found you're nothing alike, the sign is usually why. Venus in your 1st means Venus is in your rising sign, and that sign changes two things.
The first is Venus's kind strength, which follows whose sign it's in. It is full in its exaltation sign, three quarters in its moolatrikona (a set stretch of its own sign), half in its own sign and a quarter in a friend's3.51. In a neutral's sign it is an eighth, and in an enemy's sign or its debilitation it is void3.52. To Venus, Mercury and Saturn are friends, Mars and Jupiter are neutral, and the Sun and the Moon are enemies3.46. Venus is exalted in Pisces3.38 and debilitated in Virgo, the sign opposite3.39.
The second is Venus's role for your chart as a whole. One chapter sorts every planet as kind or hard for each rising sign, reckoned from the houses it rules from there16.9. In that chapter, "hard" follows the houses a planet rules: the rulers of the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 11th, for instance, are named givers of sorrow16.11.
The Libra row comes from the same verse as the Aquarius one: Venus's moolatrikona is the first 15 degrees of Libra, the rest its own sign, and Saturn's is the first 20 of Aquarius, the rest its own sign3.43.
Three rows tend to surprise. With Taurus rising, Venus rules your chart and is still counted hard for it; from Taurus, Venus also rules Libra, your 6th house. With Pisces rising, Venus has full strength and a hard role at once, and from Pisces it rules your 3rd and 8th. With Virgo rising, Venus is the one kind planet for your chart while sitting in its debilitation. The text gives both halves of each row and doesn't say which one wins, so read them as two facts side by side.
The table uses Venus's fixed friendships, and your own chart can move them a step. Planets also become friends by where they sit from one another3.48, and a fixed enemy that is a friend by position counts as neutral3.50. That can lift a Cancer or Leo Venus from void to an eighth, depending on where the Moon or the Sun sits.
With Taurus or Libra rising, one verse is yours alone: Venus in its own sign as the rising sign, joined or looked at by Saturn and Mercury, reads a person who becomes wealthy24.12. It needs Saturn and Mercury both involved.
When Venus in the 1st reads hard
Some years the charm that usually opens doors seems to stop working. The book's hardest Venus lines each come tied to a condition, so read them as yours only if the condition is.
The first comes with a condition you can't see on a chart wheel. When Venus in the rising sign is in the netrapani state ("hand to the eye"), there is certainly harm to the eyes and loss of wealth26.114. That state is one of several the book works out for each planet from a sum: the planet's lunar mansion and its navamsha26.45, then the time elapsed in the day of birth and the rising sign26.46, and even the first sound of your name26.47. A Venus in another state reads very differently. In the "sitting" state it gives steady happiness through new jewels and gold, enemies brought down, and an elevated mind through honor from people in power26.113. "Shining," in its own, exalted or a friend's sign, it reads like an elephant at full strength, equal to a king, delighting in poetry and the arts, skilled in music26.115. Neither of those softens the hand-to-eye reading; it simply belongs to one state out of several. Any real concern about your eyes is one for an eye doctor.
The second needs three things together. If Rahu, Venus and Jupiter all sit in the rising sign, the Moon is joined with Saturn, and the ruler of the rising sign is in the 8th house, the verse reads the absence of a son, through the curse of a departed spirit34.97. All three have to hold. In today's terms it speaks to a hard road around having children, told in the idiom of its age, and nothing on this page turns it.
The third is for Virgo rising, and it sits inside the Venus years, below.
What your twenty Venus years bring
Venus runs the longest of the nine planets' years, twenty in all35.15, and comes last in the order35.14. If you're living through them now, this is the passage that describes them.
Because your Venus sits in a corner of the chart, the kind version applies to you. When Venus is in its exaltation, its own sign or a corner, its years bring a royal coronation and the gain of vehicles, garments and ornaments36.67. They bring elephants, horses and cattle, fine food every day, undivided rule and royal honor36.68. Weddings, children who do well, the command of an army and reunion with beloved kin follow36.70. Today that can be a promotion with a title, a car that's finally yours, a wedding to plan, a team to lead, a friend who comes back into your life.
With Virgo rising, the hard list applies to you as well, because Venus is debilitated there. When Venus is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, debilitated, or in the 12th sign36.71, its years bring hostility from your own kin, affliction to the women of the household, loss of the results of business, and the loss of cattle and buffaloes36.72. The list closes on affliction to wife and children, or separation from your own kin36.73. Today that can look like tension with siblings, or a side business that stops paying. No verse here speaks to the Virgo case to turn it.
That closing verse then opens a second kind reading, for Leo, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, where Venus rules your 9th or 10th house. The condition is Venus as ruler of the 9th or 10th, sitting in the rising sign or the 4th house36.73. Those years bring great happiness, lordship over a country or a village, and the undertaking of good works such as temples and ponds36.74. They bring happiness through the giving of food, fine food daily, enthusiasm, growing fame, and prosperity of wife, children and wealth36.75. So a Virgo rising gets both lists, and the text sets them side by side without ranking them.
Two rules close the passage. If Venus rules your 2nd or 7th house, which it does for Aries, Scorpio and Virgo rising, its years bring bodily affliction36.76. The text's own remedy is to recite the mantra to Rudra or the Tryambaka mantra, or to give a white cow or a she-buffalo, after which, the verse says, health follows36.77. A real health worry still goes to a doctor. And with Taurus or Libra rising, Venus rules your rising sign, and the years of that ruler give strength and abundant wealth36.78.
These checks take a few minutes with your Vedic chart open.
Find your rising sign in the table above. If it's Aquarius, for instance, Venus is the one kind planet for your whole chart16.34.
If the Sun shares your 1st, see whether Venus is combust; a combust Venus has void kind strength3.52.
Look at what else sits in your 1st. Rahu and Jupiter there with Venus send you to the hard verse about children34.97; with Taurus or Libra rising, Saturn and Mercury touching Venus send you to the wealth verse24.12.
Check which planet's years you're in. Venus's own twenty35.15 are when this placement speaks loudest.
Four checks still leave most of your chart unread: the Moon, the other houses, the planet whose years you're in if it isn't Venus. Your free personal reading works from all of them and gives you a page written about you.
Where do people already come to you for taste, and do you give yourself credit for it?
If your Venus is weak by sign, which Venus things (music, a well-kept room, a good outfit) do you still reach for?
Does your rising sign count Venus as kind or hard, and does that match how love and pleasure have gone for you?
If you're in your Venus years, what has arrived, and what has asked more of your family than usual?
Venus in the 1st house: your questions
Is Venus in the 1st house good or bad?
Both, depending on your rising sign. Every Venus in a corner of the chart gets royal marks17.28; then the book counts Venus kind for Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, even for Libra, and hard for the other seven.
Does Venus in the 1st house make you beautiful?
No single verse says so. The reading comes from two parts, the 1st house as the body17.1 and Venus's own beautiful form3.17, and a weak Venus carries less of it.
What if Venus is in someone else's 1st house?
That's chart comparison, or synastry, a Western technique. This page reads Venus in your own birth chart.
Is Venus in the 1st house different for a Leo or Sagittarius rising?
Yes. With Leo rising, Venus sits in an enemy's sign and counts as hard16.22; with Sagittarius rising, it is the one hard planet for the chart16.30.
Is Venus in your 1st house?
Open your Vedic chart and look at the house your rising sign sits in. If Venus is there, start with its row in the table above.
The verses
From the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, with our plain-English reading. Where a verse is in the public-domain Bombay 1899 printing, the page link opens the scan, so you can read it there yourself.
In a neutral's sign it is declared to be an eighth; it is void in debilitation, combustion, or an enemy's sign. Likewise the wise should state malefic/inauspicious strength in the reverse order.
The matter of a fine wife, vehicles, goods, and ornaments should be judged from Venus; longevity from Rahu and Saturn; the father from the Sun; and the mother from the Moon.
Mercury and Jupiter are strong in the east; the Sun and Mars in the south; Saturn in the west; and Venus and the Moon in the north — the directional strengths of the grahas.
Subtract the 4th house from the Sun and Mars, the 7th from Jupiter and Mercury, the lagna from Saturn, and the 10th (midheaven) from Venus and the Moon; if the remainder exceeds 6 signs, subtract from 12, convert to degrees, and divide by 3 — this gives the dig-bala (directional strength).
In its own exaltation, a graha's auspicious strength is full; in its moolatrikona, it is full less a quarter; in its own sign it is half; in a friend's sign it is declared to be only a quarter.
To Jupiter: Mercury and Venus are enemies, Saturn is neutral, and the others are friends. To Venus: Mercury and Saturn are friends, Mars and Jupiter are neutral, and the rest are enemies.
Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces, and Libra are declared, in order, to be the signs of exaltation (uchcha) of the Sun and the other grahas.
The precise degree of exaltation for each graha is given by a series of word-numerals; the sign of debilitation (nicha) is the seventh from the exaltation sign, at the same degree already stated (the exact numeric values encoded by the word-numerals in this verse are not fully certain without further cross-reference).
According to these houses, the measure [of strength] of the grahas should be reckoned; the kendra-dosha (kendra-lordship affliction) of the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus increases in that order.
The lord of the 5th (son-house) is remembered as giving auspicious, happy results even if it is [otherwise] a malefic; the lords of the 3rd, 11th, 6th, and 8th are givers of sorrow.
Dwelling in the east, of royal kinship, roaming the mountains, of rajo-guna, rising by its back (prishthodaya), and of fiery nature — the sign Aries is ruled by Mars.
For Mesha (Aries) lagna: Saturn, Mercury, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Sun are benefic. The mere combination of Saturn and Jupiter does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
White, ruled by Venus, long-bodied, quadruped, strong by night, dwelling in the south, domesticated, of the merchant class, earthy, female, and rising by its back — this is Taurus.
For Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna: Jupiter, Venus, and the Moon are malefic; Saturn and the Sun are benefic. The one Raja-yoga-karaka is Saturn (रवेः सुतः, "son of the Sun") alone, directly.
Rising by its head, depicted as a pair of humans — one bearing a mace, the other a vina — ruled by Mercury (whose direction is west), biped, strong by night, foremost among domesticated creatures, and of airy nature — this is Gemini.
For Mithuna (Gemini) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun are malefic; Venus alone is benefic. The combination of Saturn and Jupiter [here] gives results the same way as [described] for one born in Mesha lagna.
For Karka (Cancer) lagna: Venus and Mercury are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत, "son of the earth") alone becomes the Raja-yoga-karaka, directly.
Leo, ruled by the Sun, is of sattva-guna, quadruped, of the kshatriya class, strong, rising by its head, large-bodied, pale/tawny, and strong in the earlier part of the day.
For Simha (Leo) lagna: Mercury, Venus, and Saturn (अर्कज, "son of the Sun") are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun give auspicious results. The mere combination of Jupiter and Venus does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
Associated with grain and fire, of the vaishya class, of variegated color, windy (restless) in nature; a maiden, joined with tamas, of youthful disposition, and ruled by Mercury.
Head-rising, endowed with strength by day, of the shudra class, of rajo-guna; ruled by Venus, lord of the west, of medium body, and biped — this is Tula (Libra).
Mars is the maraka; Jupiter and the other [aforesaid grahas] carry the character of marakas [through association], and are inauspicious in their effects; Venus (काव्य) gives even/neutral results — so it should be known for one born under Tula.
Head-rising, small-bodied, many-legged, of the brahmin class, strong, associated with the benefics, strong by day, tawny-colored, moving through water and earth; abundant in bristles and extremely sharp-limbed — this is Vrishchika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars.
For Vrishchika (Scorpio) lagna: Mercury, Mars, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Moon are benefic. The Sun and the Moon together become the Yoga-karakas.
For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna: Venus alone is malefic; Mercury and the Sun are benefic. Their combination (Sun and Mercury) is a Raja-yoga; the maraka is Saturn (भास्करसुत, "son of the Sun").
Dhanu, continued: situated in the east, roaming the earth, radiant, and rising by its back. Then, for Makara (Capricorn): ruled by Saturn, of tamas, earthy, south-dwelling, and strong by night.
For Makara (Capricorn) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are malefic; Venus and Mercury (चन्द्रज, "son of the Moon") are benefic. Saturn is itself the maraka; Mars and the other [aforesaid malefics act as marakas] through association.
Venus's moolatrikona spans fifteen degrees of Libra, the rest of Libra being its own sign; Saturn's moolatrikona spans twenty degrees of Aquarius, the rest being its own sign.
For Kumbha (Aquarius) lagna: Jupiter, the Moon, and Mars are malefic; Venus (दैत्यगुरु, "teacher of the demons") alone is benefic. Venus is the Raja-yoga-karaka, together with Mars and Jupiter.
Its ruler is Jupiter (suracharya, teacher of the gods). Thus have the natures of the signs been declared; each consists of thirty degrees, for the purpose of both gross and subtle results.
For Meena (Pisces) lagna: Saturn, Venus, and the Sun are malefic; Mercury, Mars, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत) and Jupiter together become the Yoga-karakas.
Grahas occupying certain houses relative to one another (per the scheme given) are to be known as temporary (tatkalika) friends at that time; in the remaining houses they are temporary non-friends.
When enmity and friendship combine, the result is neutral; when enemy and enemy combine, it becomes a 'great enemy' (adhishatru). Thus the wise describe five grades of relationship (panchadha-maitri) among the grahas.
When Venus, in the netrapani state, is in the lagna, 7th, or 10th house, there is certainly harm to the eyes and loss of wealth; in any other house, one instead has a spacious dwelling.
Whatever nakshatra a graha occupies, multiply [the graha's own count] by that nakshatra's ordinal number; multiply the product again by the graha's own navamsha count.
The wise should always add together [to that product] the elapsed ghatis of the day and the lagna's count, then divide the whole by twelve; the remainder is to be applied to determine the state.
The remainder is again multiplied by itself; to the product is added the svarank (vowel-count) of the native's name's first letter, and the whole is then divided by twelve.
If Venus (उशना) is in the upaveshana state: one has constant happiness through new jewels and golden ornaments, the destruction of one's enemies, and, through honor even from a king, an elevated mind.
When Venus, in its own sign, exaltation, or a friend's sign, is in the prakashana state: one is like an elephant sporting in its full strength, equal to a king, delighting in poetry and the arts, and skilled in music.
If Rahu, Venus, and Jupiter are in the lagna, the Moon is joined with Saturn, and the lagna-lord is in the 8th house (mrityu-rashi), there is absence of a son by a preta's curse.
[Their dasha periods, encoded as number-words, are, in order:] six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven, and twenty years, respectively held [as the dasha-years for Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and Venus].
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu (tamas), Jupiter (vakpati), Saturn, Mercury (manda-chandra-ja), Ketu, and Venus — these, in order, should be known as the dasha-lords.
Now the results of Venus' dasha: when Venus is in its supreme exaltation, its own exaltation, its own sign, or a kendra — the attainment of royal coronation (nrupa-abhisheka), and [the gain of] vehicles, garments, and ornaments [result].
BPHS 36.68
Gain of elephants, horses, and cattle, and daily fine food; the gain of undivided territorial rule and royal honor and prosperity.
Gain of wealth from a lost kingdom, and accumulation of cattle-wealth in the household [occur, closing the favorable results]. When Venus is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, or debilitated, or in the 12th sign —
Hostility from one's own kin, and affliction to the women of the household; loss of results from business, and destruction of cattle, buffaloes, and the like.
BPHS 36.73
Affliction to wife and children, or separation from one's own kin, [occurs]. When Venus, being the 9th or 10th lord, is situated in the lagna or the 4th house (vahana-rashi) —
In that dasha, great happiness, and lordship over a country or village [occur]; the undertaking of meritorious works such as temples, ponds, and the like [results].
In its own bhukti (sub-period), the result is thus [as described]; [similar] results apply in [its] other bhuktis as well. But if Venus is the lord of the 2nd or 7th house, bodily affliction will occur.
For the removal of that fault, one should recite [the mantra to] Rudra or the Tryambaka mantra; giving a white cow or a she-buffalo, health will result.
The dasha of the lagna-lord gives strength and abundant wealth; that of the 2nd lord (vitteshitu), death or hardship; that of the brother-house's lord (3rd), malefic results for the most part. The dasha of the 4th lord brings [domestic] dwelling; that of the wisdom-house's lord (5th), the happiness of learning; that of the disease-house's lord (6th), fear from enemies; that of the wife-house's lord (7th), grief.
