Jupiter mahadasha: the 16 Jupiter years people call lucky
Sixteen years ruled by Jupiter, the planet you know as luck. A centuries-old Sanskrit text makes those years conditional, and says when they open hard.

Jupiter in the 9th, a trine house: the kind of placement BPHS 36.40 reads as honor, family joy and good work across Jupiter's sixteen years. An illustration of the placement, not your chart.
In the chart you already read, Jupiter is the lucky one — expansion, generosity, the benefic everyone hopes is well placed. A centuries-old Sanskrit text, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, calls that same planet Guru, the teacher, and hands it sixteen years of your life. It does not call those years lucky. Exalted, in its own sign, or in an angle, a trine or the 11th, the text reads honor, a name, and happiness through wife and children36.40. Debilitated, burned by the Sun, among harsh planets and sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the same sixteen years open with loss of position and worry36.43 — and then grow kinder in the middle and at the end36.44.
That last line is why this page exists. The book says nothing about your Jupiter until it knows where it sits.
Sixteen years, and where they fall in the cycle
Your life is handed to nine rulers in a fixed order: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus35.14. Their shares are six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven and twenty years, so Jupiter's sixteen sit between Rahu's eighteen and Saturn's nineteen35.15. Where you enter the cycle is set by the lunar mansion your Moon held at birth, counted from Krittika35.12. Follow that count and Jupiter takes Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada. If your Moon falls in one of those, you were born inside your Jupiter years; if not, they reach you when Rahu's long stretch ends.
This is the part with no Western equivalent. Transits run on a shared clock — the Saturn return arrives at much the same age for everyone. A planet's years do not. Two people the same age can be living under different planets, which is why one finds their early thirties expansive and the other narrow.
What this text reads into a strong Jupiter's years
Take a Jupiter in exaltation or its own sign, in an angle, a trine or the 11th, or strong in the ninth-part chart Vedic astrologers call the navamsa. The text calls those years favorable36.38, then lists what it reads into it: the gain of a kingdom, great happiness, honor from the king, a name, elephants and horses, and the worship of gods and teachers36.39.
Then it turns to the house: happiness through wife and children, vehicles and fine clothes, success in rites, and the hearing of Vedanta, the old teaching on the self36.40. Through a great ruler's favor what you set out to do is accomplished, with a palanquin and well-being36.41. The kind list closes on children and a wife, and the merit earned by feeding people36.42.
Read today, a kingdom can be the role you had been working toward, or charge of a team or a practice of your own. The king's favor can be a senior person who decides to back you. And the hearing of Vedanta tells you the mood these verses expect: study, a teacher, the wish to understand rather than to acquire.
The question people actually arrive with: a hard start
Search for Jupiter mahadasha and you find people asking why theirs began badly. The text answers for one Jupiter in particular: debilitated, burned by the Sun or joined with harsh planets, and placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house36.42. For that Jupiter it reads loss of position, distress of mind, trouble touching children, great fear, loss of cattle and wealth, and pilgrimage36.43. Then the line worth more than the rest: at the beginning there is hardship, and in the middle and at the end, happiness, honor and prosperity36.44.
Three things hold that in proportion.
It is conditional. Those lines belong to a weakened Jupiter in a hidden house — the mirror of the strong case above, not a verdict on everyone whose Jupiter years have begun.
It speaks an old household's language. Loss of position can be a role that ends; loss of cattle was working wealth, which today can read as income drying up for a while. Pilgrimage can be travel you did not plan.
The verse turns itself. The same rule that gives the hard opening gives a better middle and end, and the seasons below shift single years inside the sixteen.
Read these as what the text says about such a placement, never as a forecast for you. Where they touch money, work or family they are not advice, and a real worry belongs with someone who can look at your circumstances.
Marriage, children and study, where these verses put them
If your question is marriage or children, these are the years where the text puts them most plainly — and only for the well-placed Jupiter, as happiness through wife and children36.40,36.42. For the weakened one the same subject returns as trouble touching children36.43. Readings of a placement, not forecasts.
Sixteen years are shared among all nine rulers, and Jupiter's own season comes first. Exalted or in its own sign, in an angle or trine from the rising sign, the text reads charge of many kingdoms and honor from the king37.313, with cattle, vehicles, ornaments and a new walled house37.314. In the 9th or 10th: honor from teachers and lords, and meetings with your equals in rank37.315. Debilitated, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th37.316, it reads a parting from children and wife, loss of wealth, and, through the ruler of the 7th, strain on the body37.318. For that strain the verses name their own response: the thousand names of Shiva and the Rudrashtadhyayi, and the gift of a cow37.319 — a practice and an act of giving, never medical or financial advice, and a health worry belongs with a doctor. No stone and no paid ritual appears in these verses.
Then the others, in the order the text gives them:
Saturn. Strong in exaltation, its own or a friend's sign, in an angle, trine or the 11th37.320: standing, wealth, happiness through a woman37.321. In the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated or burned37.324, it reads bad turns at home and coldness from your own people37.326. In an angle, trine, the 11th or the 2nd from Jupiter it gives land and a son37.327; hidden from Jupiter with harsh planets37.328, conflict with family and work that keeps breaking off37.329.
Mercury. In an angle, trine or the 11th, exalted or in its own sign, with Jupiter37.332: wealth, ease, a wish fulfilled through a powerful patron37.333. With kind planets on it, happiness through your wife37.336; the text adds a loss of wealth toward its end, and more enemies if Mars aspects it37.337.
Ketu. With a kind planet, modest gain37.344; in the 4th, 5th, 9th or 10th from Jupiter, money from a doubtful source too37.345. In the 8th or 12th from Jupiter, or with harsh planets, it reads displeasure from authority, loss of wealth, confinement and trouble for kin37.348, and friction with your father and brothers37.349.
Venus. With the rulers of the 9th and an angle, in the 11th or the 5th37.351: territory and happiness37.352. In an angle or the 9th from Jupiter, gain through a woman and a meeting with powerful people37.358. In the 6th, 8th or 12th, or debilitated37.355, quarrels with kin and trouble for wife and children37.356, a dispute with a brother or a father-in-law37.357. Venus runs its own twenty years later in the cycle.
The Sun. Exalted, in its own sign, in an angle, a trine, the 3rd or the 11th37.362, or strong in the 9th from Jupiter: honor37.363, the birth of a son, and aims reached through friends and employers37.364.
The Moon. Strong and full in an angle, trine or the 11th37.369: honor and happiness through wife and children37.370. With harsh planets in the 6th or 8th from Jupiter37.373, trouble with those who claim your estate, strain touching your mother37.374.
Mars. In an angle or trine, or in its own dignity37.376: study and marriage, land, success in what you take on37.377. Hidden from Jupiter with harsh planets, or debilitated, loss of grain, wealth and house37.380.
Rahu. Exalted, in an angle or the 9th, or with an angle's ruler37.383, it is called a strong combination, though the first five months ask for toil37.384; then authority, a patron abroad, a thriving home37.385. In the 6th or 8th from Jupiter37.387, too many tasks at home and conflict with a brother37.388.
So sixteen years are never one verdict: a weak Jupiter can hold a Sun season read as honor, a strong one a Ketu season read as loss.
Three things that decide your Jupiter years
In order: the sign, where exaltation or its own sign leans one way36.38 and debility the other36.42. The house, where an angle, a trine or the 11th is the strong case and the 6th, 8th and 12th the hidden one36.43. Then the company — harsh planets beside it, or the Sun's glare — which turns the kind reading into the hard one. After that, every season's ruler by its own placement: the weighing our method sets out, and the way each planet's years in the dashas section are read.
Questions to sit with in your Jupiter years
These verses expect study and a teacher, not only gain. Who are you learning from right now?
The hard reading opens hard and eases. If you are early in years you were told would be lucky, what changes if you treat this as the opening rather than the whole?
The kind readings arrive through someone's favor. Whose backing have you not asked for?
"The merit of feeding people" sits in the same list as a kingdom. What do you give away when things go well?
Jupiter mahadasha: short answers
How long is it?
Sixteen years35.15, and they begin once the Rahu years end, in the fixed order35.14.
Are the Jupiter years the luckiest?
This text ranks none of the nine. It reads the years as favorable for a Jupiter exalted, in its own sign, or in an angle, a trine or the 11th36.38, and hard for one debilitated or burned in the 6th, 8th or 12th36.43. The planet's reputation is not the verdict on its years.
Why did mine start badly?
For the weakened Jupiter above, the text puts hardship at the beginning, and happiness, honor and prosperity in the middle and at the end36.44. It gives no dates.
What should I avoid during it?
These verses prescribe no conduct and nothing to buy — only the conditions above, the rulers of the seasons, and for one hard case a mantra and a gift37.319.
Is it good for marriage or children?
For a well-placed Jupiter the text reads happiness through wife and children36.40; for a weakened one, trouble touching children36.43. Readings of a placement, not predictions.
What are the antardashas?
They are the nine seasons, one per ruler, Jupiter's own first37.313, then Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, the Sun, Moon, Mars and Rahu, each read by where that planet sits.
Are these your Jupiter years?
Check your own chart. Your reading sets out which planet's years you are in, with dates, and what this text makes of each — where your Jupiter sits, which of these verses fire for it, and which of the nine seasons is running now, every line next to the verse it rests on.

Happiness through wife and children, and the gain of vehicles and garments [occur]; success in yajnas and other rites, and the hearing and study of Vedanta and the like, come about.
At the beginning, hardship results, [though] bringing the gain of quadrupeds; in the middle and at the end, one attains happiness, royal honor, and prosperity.
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu (tamas), Jupiter (vakpati), Saturn, Mercury (manda-chandra-ja), Ketu, and Venus — these, in order, should be known as the dasha-lords.
[Their dasha periods, encoded as number-words, are, in order:] six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven, and twenty years, respectively held [as the dasha-years for Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and Venus].

Now Vimshottari Dasha is stated: listen, O best of the twice-born, to the method of deriving it. [Nakshatras are counted] from Krittika onward up to one's own birth-nakshatra.
Now the results of Jupiter's dasha: when Jupiter is in its own exaltation or own sign, situated in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or in its mulatrikona or the 11th, or in an exaltation-navamsha or its own navamsha —
[Such a dasha brings] gain of kingdom, great happiness, royal honor and renown; being endowed with elephants and horses, and the worship of gods and brahmins.
महाराज प्रसादेन इष्टसिद्धिः सुखावहा। आंदोलिकादिलाभश्च कल्याणं च महत्सुखम्।।४१।।
Through the great king's favor, the accomplishment of desired ends brings happiness; the gain of a palanquin and the like, well-being, and great happiness [occur].

Gain of sons and wife, and great merit through the gift of food [occur, closing the strong-Jupiter results]. If Jupiter is debilitated, combust, conjoined with malefics, and in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house —
In Jupiter's mahadasha, Jupiter's own antardasha: when Jupiter, in its own exaltation or own sign, is in a kendra or trikona from the lagna, one becomes lord of many kingdoms, prosperous, and honored by the king.
Gain of cows, buffaloes, and the like, along with clothes, vehicles, and ornaments; construction of a new dwelling, together with a mansion and its surrounding wall.
If Jupiter is conjoined in the 9th or 10th house, wealth attended by the opulence of elephants; honor from brahmins and lords, and audience with rulers of equal rank.

There is gain of cows, buffaloes, and the like, and gain of wealth through a shudra. But if Saturn is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th from the dasha-lord, joined with malefics —

जीवस्यान्तर्गते सौम्ये केन्द्रलाभत्रिकोणगे। स्वोच्चे वा स्वर्क्षे वापि दशाधिपसमन्विते।।२०।।
In Jupiter's mahadasha, Mercury's antardasha: when Mercury is in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or in its own exaltation or own sign, joined with the dasha-lord —
— it gives gain of wealth, bodily comfort, gain of a kingdom, and great happiness; through the great king's favor, the accomplishment of one's desired aim, bringing happiness.
If aspected by and joined with benefics, there is happiness through one's wife and the arrival of wealth; at the beginning there is auspicious bodily comfort and gain of vehicles and garments.
In Jupiter's mahadasha, Ketu's antardasha: when Ketu is joined with a benefic, there is modest happiness and gain of wealth, though also the eating of wretched food.
There is food from others, or food from ancestral rites, and wealth from a tainted source — this when Ketu is in the 5th, 9th, 4th, or 10th from the dasha-lord.

But if Ketu is in the 8th, 12th, or joined with malefics from the dasha-lord, there is royal displeasure, loss of wealth, imprisonment, and affliction to kinsmen.
There is loss of strength, hostility with one's father, hostility with brothers, and mental distress; if Ketu is lord of the 2nd or 7th, there will be bodily affliction.
जीवस्यान्तर्गते शुक्रे भाग्यकेन्द्रेशसंयुते। लाभे वा सुतराशिस्थे स्वक्षेत्रे शुभसंयुते।।३९।।
In Jupiter's mahadasha, Venus's antardasha: when Venus, joined with the lords of the 9th and a kendra, is in the 11th or the 5th, in its own sign, joined with benefics —

— in its antardasha there is quarreling, hostility with kinsmen, and affliction to wife, sons, and the like; if joined with Saturn, Mars, or Rahu, there is quarreling and hostility from the king.
There is gain of vehicles, garments, livestock, and ornaments, and birth of a son; through friends and one's master, the accomplishment of one's desired aim, bringing auspiciousness in every undertaking.
