The Moon in the 4th house, the house of home and mother, where the Moon's directional strength is at its fullest. An illustration of the placement, not your chart.
The Moon in the 4th house in Vedic astrology sits in the one house where its directional strength is full: the count starts at zero in the 10th and climbs to its peak six signs away, in the 4th42.13. It is also the planet the book assigns to that house12.37, so your mind, your mother and your home share one address. Whether that reads as comfort or as weight depends most on two things: whether your Moon was waxing or waning, and your rising sign, and all twelve rising signs are in the table below.
That said, the 4th is one house out of twelve. A planet sitting next to your Moon, the sign it falls in, or the years you're living through can all pull the reading somewhere else. Your free personal reading takes those pieces together and writes them up as one page about you.
What a 4th-house Moon looks like at home
Think of the person whose mood changes with the state of their room. A messy kitchen throws off their whole week, and a clean one with something on the stove puts it right again. That fits this placement. The Moon is the planet of the mind3.1, and the 4th is where the book looks for vehicles, kinsmen, your mother's happiness, buried treasure, fields and the house itself17.4.
So the Moon here puts your inner weather in the room where you live. The verse describing the Moon's own nature calls it wise, sweet-spoken, of auspicious appearance and restless3.13. Read today, that can look like someone people open up to over their kitchen table, who still rearranges the furniture every few months.
The 4th is also one of the two houses the book singles out as special houses of happiness, the other being the 10th16.1. Comfort is part of what this house measures, and with the Moon here, your sense of comfort and your state of mind tend to move together.
Why home is where your Moon is strongest
You probably know the feeling of thinking more clearly on your own couch than in an office. The book has a measure for that. The Moon shares its best direction with Venus3.24, and the strength chapter turns this into a count: take the distance from the Moon to the 10th house, and the further the Moon sits from it, up to six signs, the more directional strength it holds42.13. The 4th is exactly six signs from the 10th, so this is the most the Moon can score.
Compare our page on the Moon in the 10th house: the same count gives a 10th-house Moon nothing, because that's where the count begins. Venus in the 4th house is the other planet that peaks here.
A second rule points the same way. The Moon is the karaka, the significator, of the 4th house12.37, and the book reads your mother from the Moon17.62. When a significator sits in its own house joined with that house's ruler, goes to a corner house or a trine, or is seen by a planet in its exaltation, the matters it stands for increase17.63. Your 4th is a corner house, the bottom point of the cross the chart is drawn on, so the planet of the mother sits in the house of the mother.
You may have read that a significator spoils the house it signifies. We didn't find that rule among this book's verses on the 4th house, and the one it does give there runs the other way: the significator's matters grow17.63.
Your mother and the 4th-house Moon
If you searched this to understand your mother, here is what the book gives. The 4th is read for her happiness17.4 and the Moon for her17.62, so with the Moon in your 4th, both of her signs fall in the same place. If that relationship takes up a lot of room in your head, there's a reason in the chart.
There is one more step, and it's easy to miss. The mother is also read from the 4th house counted from the Moon12.32, and whatever the book reads from the 4th house it also reads from the Moon's 4th8.40. Count four from a Moon in your 4th and you land on your 7th house. So look at the 7th, its planets and its ruler for your home life as well as for your partners. If you want the partner layer, the navamsa (D9) has its own guide.
None of this is a forecast about your mother. It's the book's reading, there to reflect on, and a real question about your family is for you and them to work through, with whoever actually knows the situation.
Your work comes in sideways. From the 4th, the Moon looks with full strength at the house seventh from it9.22, which is your 10th house. No verse spells out what that look does for a career, so take it as two facts side by side: the Moon is strongest at home, and from there it looks at your 10th.
How this differs from a Western Moon in the 4th
A Western chart already reads a Moon near the IC, the bottom of the chart, as roots, a parent and a need for a safe place. The Vedic layer adds three measures: the directional score above, whether your Moon was growing or shrinking at birth, and what your rising sign makes of the Moon.
First, make sure your Moon really is in your 4th. Vedic charts use the sidereal zodiac, which runs about 24 degrees behind the Western one because of axial precession, the slow wobble of Earth's axis. So a Moon late in a Western sign usually lands early in the same sign in a Vedic chart, and one early in a Western sign often falls back into the sign before. Our guide to sidereal vs tropical explains the gap, and your Vedic Moon sign shows what the Moon's sign means on its own.
Waxing or waning: the question that changes your Moon
If you were born while the Moon was shrinking toward new, the book counts your Moon among the hard planets16.5. Born while it was filling toward full, your Moon escapes that line, and kind planets are at their most powerful in that bright half of the month, the hard ones in the dark half3.26.
In the 4th it matters twice over, because the book's lines for this house change with it. In the Moon's own years, a full Moon in the 4th reads as finding buried treasure or a store of jewels36.102. A waning one falls under a much harder line, given in the hard section below. A Moon-phase calendar for your birth date settles which one you have.
Moon in the 4th for each rising sign
Your rising sign fixes which sign your 4th house is, so it also decides the Moon's dignity there and the house it rules for you. The Moon rules Cancer2.11, is exalted in Taurus3.38 and falls in Scorpio, the seventh sign from its exaltation3.39. Its friends are the Sun and Mercury, it has no enemies, and every other planet is neutral to it3.44. A planet's kind strength is half in its own sign and a quarter in a friend's3.51, an eighth in a neutral's sign, and nothing at all in its fall3.52.
The last column comes from the chapter that grades each planet, rising sign by rising sign, as kind or hard for that chart. Where the book doesn't name the Moon for a rising sign, the column says so.
Two rows need a word. For Aquarius rising, the Moon's first three degrees of Taurus are its exaltation and the rest of the sign is its moolatrikona, its root sign3.40, worth full strength and full less a quarter3.51. Strong as that is, the same chart counts the Moon as hard. For Aries rising, the Moon rules the 4th and sits there in its own sign, and a 4th-house ruler in its own sign in the 4th adds happiness and vehicles, with conches, drums and other festive instruments17.64. Today that reads like a home people come to for the party.
It can look odd that a modestly placed Moon is graded kind for one chart and an exalted one hard for another. Dignity is how well the Moon is placed; the kind-or-hard grade is what it does for your chart. Our guide to house lords explains the grading, and exalted and debilitated planets explains the dignities.
When a 4th-house Moon reads hard
The hard version has clear conditions: a Moon that is debilitated or waning. In the Moon's years, that reads as loss of money36.19. Debilitated means the Moon is in Scorpio, which in the 4th happens only for Leo rising. Waning means it was shrinking toward the new Moon when you were born.
A second verse goes further. A weak Moon joined by hard planets reads, for its years, as bodily lethargy and mental affliction, trouble from people who work for you, loss of money and harm that comes from the mother's side of the family36.20. If a hard planet shares your 4th with a weak Moon, this is the verse that describes it. For anything about your health, see a doctor; the verse doesn't diagnose anyone.
Years like that can ask you to build some support that doesn't run through family, and to notice when your mood is following the state of your home rather than the other way round. What changes the reading is the condition itself: a Moon that is waxing and strong, with no hard planet beside it, doesn't meet these two verses.
Your ten Moon years with the Moon in the 4th
The Moon runs ten years in the cycle of planetary years the book gives35.15. A good Moon's years bring the mother's welfare, ponds, fields, gardens and houses, a seat of standing, wealth, fame and the comfort of being carried in a palanquin36.12. The same verse's hard list names lost food, stinginess, loss of money, loss of judgment, disgrace and unrest. It names illness too, which belongs with a doctor.
What makes the years good is a list of conditions: the Moon exalted or in its own sign, in a corner, the 11th or a trine, with a kind planet, waxing and strong36.13. The next verse gives a second route, the Moon ruling the 9th or 10th and strongly joined with the ruler of the 4th, which brings fortune at the start and end of the years36.14. A Moon in your 4th already meets the corner condition. The own-sign or exaltation condition is met only in two rows of the table: Aries rising (Cancer) and Aquarius rising (Taurus). Libra and Scorpio rising are where the second route opens: the Moon rules your 10th or 9th there, and Saturn, ruler of your 4th in both charts, would need to sit with it.
Out of these good years the book lists auspicious work in the household, a new vehicle and a hearing with the king, with the house under the favor of Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune36.15. Then good fortune through friends and seniors, kingly standing, horses and palanquins, and white clothes36.16. Today the king's hearing can be a boss who finally backs you, and the vehicle can simply be your first car.
One more set of lines belongs to these years and to the 4th itself. When a kind planet, an exalted one or the ruler of a kind house sits in your 4th, its years read as celebration, festivity and prosperity36.100. Vehicles and villages arrive, and if it's the Moon there, you get what you wanted, with plenty of grain and produce36.101. A full Moon there adds buried treasure or a store of jewels36.102. These describe those years, not your whole life.
Which 4th-house Moon is yours?
Pull up your Vedic chart; here are four things to look at.
Find your rising sign's row in the table. With Scorpio rising, for example, the Moon rules your 9th and is counted kind for your chart16.28.
Look at the Moon's phase on your birth date. Waning, your Moon is counted with the hard planets16.5.
See what shares your 4th. Venus, Mercury or Jupiter in a corner counted from your rising sign carries what the verse calls royal marks17.28, and one beside your 4th-house Moon is in a corner. Once a mark on the body, today it can be the way you stand out among your people.
Count four houses from your Moon, which lands on your 7th, and look at what's there: the book reads the mother from that house too12.32.
All four look at the Moon alone. The rest of your chart, the other houses and whichever planet's years you're in now, can agree with this Moon or argue with it. Your free personal reading puts it all side by side in a page made for you.
When your home is in order, what changes in your head, and when it isn't, what goes first?
Which parts of your mother's life do you carry around without having chosen them?
Was your Moon waxing or waning, and does the answer match how home has felt to you?
Where, outside your home, do you feel as settled as you do inside it?
Moon in the 4th house: common questions
Is the Moon in the 4th house good in Vedic astrology?
For directional strength it's the best house the Moon has42.13. Whether it's kind for you depends on the Moon's phase16.5 and your rising sign; the table gives all twelve.
Is the Moon in the 4th house in its own house?
Only with Aries rising, where the 4th is Cancer, the Moon's own sign2.11. For every rising sign, though, the Moon is the significator of the 4th12.37.
What does the Moon in the 4th house say about my mother?
The Moon stands for her17.62 and the 4th for her happiness17.4, so she is central to this placement. Read the 7th house too, since it's the 4th from your Moon8.40.
Does the Moon in the 4th mean I'll own a home?
No verse promises that. A good Moon's years name houses, fields and gardens among their gifts36.12, and for those years a kind Moon in the 4th reads vehicles and villages36.101. Today that can mean land or a place of your own.
Does the Moon in the 4th house affect my career?
Indirectly. It looks with full strength at your 10th9.22; the book gives no line on what that look does to your work.
Are there remedies for the Moon in the 4th house?
None of the verses on this page names one, and we don't recommend gemstones or rituals. What you can do with this Moon is the four checks above and the questions to sit with.
The verses
From the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, with our plain-English reading. Where a verse is in the public-domain Bombay 1899 printing, the page link opens the scan, so you can read it there yourself.
Subtract the 4th house from the Sun and Mars, the 7th from Jupiter and Mercury, the lagna from Saturn, and the 10th (midheaven) from Venus and the Moon; if the remainder exceeds 6 signs, subtract from 12, convert to degrees, and divide by 3 — this gives the dig-bala (directional strength).
Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn — these are the bhava-karakas [of the twelve houses in order].
Mercury and Jupiter are strong in the east; the Sun and Mars in the south; Saturn in the west; and Venus and the Moon in the north — the directional strengths of the grahas.
BPHS 17.62
दिव्याङ्गनावाहनवस्तुभूषा चिन्ता तु कार्या भृगुणा बुधैद्रैः । तमः शनिभ्यामभिचिन्त्यमायुरर्केण तातःशशिना च माता ॥६२॥
The matter of a fine wife, vehicles, goods, and ornaments should be judged from Venus; longevity from Rahu and Saturn; the father from the Sun; and the mother from the Moon.
The matter of intellect should be judged from Mercury; when these karakas are in their respective houses joined with the house-lords, or have gone to kendras/trikonas, or are seen by [a graha] in its own exaltation, the corresponding significations increase.
From the Sun, in the punya-bhava [9th], the father; from the Moon, in the 4th, the mother; from Mars, in the 3rd, the brother; the maternal uncle from the ripu-bhava [6th] from Mercury.
In the fourth, in tanu, in dhana, in labha, in bhagya — whatever is considered there, that same, from the Moon's fourth, tanu, labha and bhagya, one should surely consider.
The lords of the wife-house (7th) and the family-house (2nd) are declared to be the [principal] marakas. The waning Moon and the Sun should also be known as malefic grahas [under these conditions].
The malefics are strong in the dark fortnight, the benefics powerful in the bright fortnight; benefic grahas are strong in the northern course of the Sun (Uttarayana), and the malefics in the southern course (Dakshinayana).
If the Moon is full, there is attainment of buried treasure, or one gains a store of jewels; if it is Venus there, one is honored with musical instruments such as the mridanga, along with tokens of respect.
अजो वृषो मृगः कन्या कुलीरझषतौलिकाः । सूर्यादीनां क्रमादेतास्तुङ्गसंज्ञाः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥३८॥
Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces, and Libra are declared, in order, to be the signs of exaltation (uchcha) of the Sun and the other grahas.
The precise degree of exaltation for each graha is given by a series of word-numerals; the sign of debilitation (nicha) is the seventh from the exaltation sign, at the same degree already stated (the exact numeric values encoded by the word-numerals in this verse are not fully certain without further cross-reference).
Mercury is neutral to the Sun; Venus and Saturn are its enemies; the remaining grahas are its friends. To the Moon, certain grahas stand as related; the rest of the grahas are neutral to it (natural friendship/enmity, naisargika-maitri).
In its own exaltation, a graha's auspicious strength is full; in its moolatrikona, it is full less a quarter; in its own sign it is half; in a friend's sign it is declared to be only a quarter.
In a neutral's sign it is declared to be an eighth; it is void in debilitation, combustion, or an enemy's sign. Likewise the wise should state malefic/inauspicious strength in the reverse order.
मन्दसौम्यसिताः पापाः शुभौ गुरुदिवाकरौ । न शुभं योगमात्रेण प्रभवेच्छनिजीवयोः ॥१३॥
For Mesha (Aries) lagna: Saturn, Mercury, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Sun are benefic. The mere combination of Saturn and Jupiter does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
Leo, ruled by the Sun, is of sattva-guna, quadruped, of the kshatriya class, strong, rising by its head, large-bodied, pale/tawny, and strong in the earlier part of the day.
For Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna: Jupiter, Venus, and the Moon are malefic; Saturn and the Sun are benefic. The one Raja-yoga-karaka is Saturn (रवेः सुतः, "son of the Sun") alone, directly.
Associated with grain and fire, of the vaishya class, of variegated color, windy (restless) in nature; a maiden, joined with tamas, of youthful disposition, and ruled by Mercury.
For Mithuna (Gemini) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun are malefic; Venus alone is benefic. The combination of Saturn and Jupiter [here] gives results the same way as [described] for one born in Mesha lagna.
Head-rising, endowed with strength by day, of the shudra class, of rajo-guna; ruled by Venus, lord of the west, of medium body, and biped — this is Tula (Libra).
For Karka (Cancer) lagna: Venus and Mercury are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत, "son of the earth") alone becomes the Raja-yoga-karaka, directly.
Head-rising, small-bodied, many-legged, of the brahmin class, strong, associated with the benefics, strong by day, tawny-colored, moving through water and earth; abundant in bristles and extremely sharp-limbed — this is Vrishchika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars.
बुधशुक्रार्कजाः पापाः भौमेज्यार्काः शुभप्रदाः । प्रभवेद्योगमात्रेण न शुभं गुरुशुक्रयोः ॥२२॥
For Simha (Leo) lagna: Mercury, Venus, and Saturn (अर्कज, "son of the Sun") are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun give auspicious results. The mere combination of Jupiter and Venus does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
BPHS 2.17
अश्वजङ्घो त्वथ धनुर्गुरू स्वामी च सात्त्विकः ॥१७॥
Having the shanks of a horse (the sign Dhanu, Sagittarius); ruled by Jupiter, and of sattva-guna.
Dhanu, continued: situated in the east, roaming the earth, radiant, and rising by its back. Then, for Makara (Capricorn): ruled by Saturn, of tamas, earthy, south-dwelling, and strong by night.
For Tula (Libra) lagna: Jupiter, the Sun, and Mars are malefic; Saturn and Mercury are benefic. The Moon and its "son" (Mercury) become the karakas of Raja-yoga.
Aquarius is of the shudra class, its ruler declared lord of the western direction. Then, for Mina (Pisces): depicted as two fish joined tail-to-mouth; the sign Pisces is strong by day.
For Vrishchika (Scorpio) lagna: Mercury, Mars, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Moon are benefic. The Sun and the Moon together become the Yoga-karakas.
सुराचार्याधिपश्चास्य राशीनां गदितं मया । त्रिंशद्भागात्मकः स्थूलसूक्ष्माकरफलाय च ॥२४॥
Its ruler is Jupiter (suracharya, teacher of the gods). Thus have the natures of the signs been declared; each consists of thirty degrees, for the purpose of both gross and subtle results.
For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna: Venus alone is malefic; Mercury and the Sun are benefic. Their combination (Sun and Mercury) is a Raja-yoga; the maraka is Saturn (भास्करसुत, "son of the Sun").
Dwelling in the east, of royal kinship, roaming the mountains, of rajo-guna, rising by its back (prishthodaya), and of fiery nature — the sign Aries is ruled by Mars.
For Makara (Capricorn) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are malefic; Venus and Mercury (चन्द्रज, "son of the Moon") are benefic. Saturn is itself the maraka; Mars and the other [aforesaid malefics act as marakas] through association.
White, ruled by Venus, long-bodied, quadruped, strong by night, dwelling in the south, domesticated, of the merchant class, earthy, female, and rising by its back — this is Taurus.
For Kumbha (Aquarius) lagna: Jupiter, the Moon, and Mars are malefic; Venus (दैत्यगुरु, "teacher of the demons") alone is benefic. Venus is the Raja-yoga-karaka, together with Mars and Jupiter.
शीर्षोदयी नृमिथुनं सगदं च सवीणकम् । प्रत्यक्स्वामी द्विपाद्रात्रिबली ग्राम्याग्रगोऽनिली ॥९॥
Rising by its head, depicted as a pair of humans — one bearing a mace, the other a vina — ruled by Mercury (whose direction is west), biped, strong by night, foremost among domesticated creatures, and of airy nature — this is Gemini.
For Meena (Pisces) lagna: Saturn, Venus, and the Sun are malefic; Mercury, Mars, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत) and Jupiter together become the Yoga-karakas.
The Sun's moolatrikona spans the first twenty degrees of Leo, the remainder of Leo being its own house; the Moon is exalted in the first three degrees of Taurus, the rest of Taurus being its moolatrikona.
स्वकीये स्वांशगे स्वोच्चे सुखस्थानस्थितो यदि । सुखवाहनवृद्धिः स्याच्छङ्खभेर्यादिवाद्ययुक् ॥६४॥
If [the 4th-lord] is situated in the house of happiness in its own sign, its own navamsha, or its own exaltation, there is an increase of happiness and vehicles, accompanied by conches, drums, and other festive instruments.
नीचे वा क्षीणचन्द्रे वा धनहानिर्भविष्यति। दुश्चिक्ये बलसंयुक्ते क्वचित्सौख्यं क्वचिद्धनम्।।१९।।
If the Moon is debilitated or waning, loss of wealth will occur; if strong in the 3rd house (dushchikya), sometimes happiness and sometimes wealth [result].
If weak and conjoined with malefics, bodily lethargy and mental affliction [result]; trouble from servants, loss of wealth, and harm arising from the mother's side of the family.
[Their dasha periods, encoded as number-words, are, in order:] six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven, and twenty years, respectively held [as the dasha-years for Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and Venus].
Now the results of the Moon's dasha: an excellent dasha of the Moon brings the mother's welfare, [gain of] ponds and the like, fields, gardens, houses, seats/status, excellent brahmins, wealth, fame, and the comfort of a palanquin. A malefic dasha of the Moon brings loss of food, miserliness, endless loss of wealth, disease, loss of wisdom, disgrace, danger to the mother's life, disturbance, and severe cold-fever.
[If the Moon is] in its own exaltation or its own sign, situated in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, conjoined with a benefic graha, and waxing (vriddhi) and endowed with strength —
When the Moon [is] the lord of the 10th or 9th house, strongly conjoined with the 4th lord (sukhesha) — at the beginning and end [of the dasha], it brings great fortune and gain of wealth, grain, and the like through great luck.
In the household, auspicious undertakings [occur]; the gain of a vehicle, an audience with the king; whatever undertaking and wealth-purpose is accomplished, [with] the household under Lakshmi's favorable glance.
मित्रप्रभुवशाद्भाग्यं राज्यलाभं महत्सुखम्। अश्वांदोल्यादिलाभं च श्वेतवस्त्रादिलाभकृत्।।१६।।
Through friends and superiors, good fortune, the gain of kingly status, and great happiness [occur]; the gain of horses, palanquins, and the like, and the gain of white garments and the like.
There is celebration, festivity, prosperity, and worship of gods and brahmins, when in the 4th house there are exalted planets, or the lord of a benefic house, or any benefic planet.
There is gain of vehicles and villages, and abundant increase of cattle; if it is the Moon there, there is attainment of one's desire, accompanied by much grain and produce.
