Venus in the 4th house: the house of your home, vehicles and kin, where Venus's directional strength peaks. An illustration of the placement, not your chart.
Venus in the 4th house in Vedic astrology puts Venus where it is strongest by direction: the count for that strength starts from nothing at the 10th house and peaks at the 4th42.13. The 4th is your home, your vehicles, your kin and your mother's happiness17.4, and Venus is the planet read for vehicles and fine things17.62. How kind that turns out for you depends on your rising sign, and the table below gives all twelve.
Still, that is one house of twelve. A planet sharing the 4th, the sign your Moon is in, or the years running right now can tilt it another way. Your free personal reading reads those pieces together, on one page written for you.
Why the 4th house is Venus's strongest spot
Think of the friend whose apartment turns into the default hangout, the one with the sofa everyone ends up on. There's a reason in the text why home is where this Venus is strongest.
Each of the planets gains power facing one point of the compass, and for Venus that point is the north3.24. A later chapter on strength turns that into a count you can do on a chart: take Venus's distance from the 10th house, and the further it is, up to six signs, the more directional strength it holds42.13. The 4th is exactly six signs from the 10th, so a Venus there gets the full measure. On our page about Venus in the 1st house, the same count gives half.
A second rule adds to it. Each matter of life has a significator: Venus for a fine wife, vehicles, goods and ornaments, the Sun for the father, the Moon for the mother17.62. Those matters grow when the significator sits in a corner of the chart or in one of its two trine houses, the 5th and 9th, among a few other conditions17.63. The 4th counts as a corner: the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th sit on the two lines that cross the chart. So the planet of vehicles sits in a corner, and that corner is the house of vehicles.
Venus in any corner also gives what the verse calls royal marks17.28, once a sign on the body that someone was marked out. Read today, it can be the ease people notice in you the first time they walk into your space.
What Venus in the 4th looks like in your home
Picture a Sunday at yours: a playlist you made for the room, and a dinner that ran three hours over. That's close to the list Venus is the significator of: happiness, song and poetry, flowers, youth, ornaments, silver, vehicles, prosperity and a feel for the arts12.karakatva-6.
One more line is worth knowing, because it names a home. Each planet is placed in one of several states by a sum that begins with its lunar mansion and its navamsha, the ninth-part slice of a sign it falls in26.45. For Venus in the netrapani ("hand to the eye") state, the 1st, 7th and 10th houses read harm to the eyes and loss of wealth, but any other house, your 4th included, reads a spacious dwelling instead26.114.
These lines are readings to reflect on, and they don't forecast property for you. A choice about buying a place, money or your family belongs to you and the people who share that home with you.
Your mother, your love life and your work
If you came here to learn what this Venus says about your mother or your marriage, here's the plain answer first. We searched every verse that names Venus alongside the 4th house, in the Sanskrit as well as the English, and none reads Venus in the 4th for your mother. The lines on a partner and on rank that do touch this placement belong to Venus's years, and they're given in that section below.
Here is what the book does give. It reads your mother's happiness from the 4th house itself17.4, and your mother from the Moon, not from Venus17.62. So for her, look at your Moon. Venus is the significator of a wife12.karakatva-6, which today reads as a partner; that line holds for Venus anywhere in the chart.
Work is built from parts. Venus looks with full strength at the house seventh from where it sits9.22, and seven houses on from the 4th is the 10th. The 10th is read for kingship, a livelihood tied to the sky, honor, the father, residence abroad and debt17.10. No single verse says what Venus's look does to your 10th, so treat the link between your home and your work as two facts set side by side. Our guide to the 10th house reads that house in full.
Venus in the 4th: Vedic vs Western
A Western chart reads Venus near the bottom, the IC, as a love of home and a family that tends to get along. The Vedic reading keeps the home and adds a measure: how much directional strength Venus has there, and whether your rising sign counts it as kind for you.
Make sure your Venus is really in your 4th before you read on. Vedic charts are drawn on the sidereal zodiac, roughly 24 degrees behind the Western one; the gap comes from axial precession, a slow turning of the direction Earth's axis points. A planet late in a sign keeps that sign, while one in its first degrees slips back a sign, and the same goes for your rising sign, so Venus can turn up in your 3rd or 5th instead. Our page on sidereal vs tropical astrology sets the two zodiacs side by side, and how to find your Vedic rising sign gets you the right starting point.
Venus in the 4th for each rising sign
Two people with Venus in the 4th can have very different homes. Your rising sign fixes which sign sits in your 4th, and that changes how much good Venus can give and what role it plays for you.
Venus's kind strength follows the owner of its sign. Exalted, it has all of it; in its moolatrikona, the favored first stretch of Libra, it has all but a quarter; at home in its own sign, half; with a friend, a quarter3.51. A neutral's sign leaves an eighth, and an enemy's sign, its fall or burning up beside the Sun (being combust) leaves nothing3.52. Mercury and Saturn are Venus's friends, Mars and Jupiter neutral, the Sun and the Moon enemies3.46. Venus is exalted in Pisces3.38 and falls in Virgo, the sign opposite3.39.
Then there's Venus's role for your chart. Each planet is judged as a helper or a troublemaker by the houses it rules16.9, and chapter 16 works that out rising sign by rising sign.
The Cancer row splits at 15 degrees: up to there Libra is Venus's moolatrikona, and past it Libra is plain own sign3.43. Your chart can also shift a friendship by one step. Placement makes temporary friends of planets3.48, and when a lasting enemy is a temporary friend, the two cancel to neutral3.50. Depending on where your Moon or your Sun sits, an Aries or Taurus row can climb from none to an eighth.
Three rows are worth a second look. With Cancer or Aquarius rising, Venus rules your 4th and sits in it in its own sign, and the ruler of the 4th in the 4th, in its own sign, reads an increase of happiness and vehicles, with conches, drums and festive music17.64. With Capricorn rising, the verse after the one that calls Venus kind adds that Venus alone gives a good yoga for you16.33. With Sagittarius rising, Venus has full strength in Pisces and is still the one hard planet for your chart; the text gives both facts and doesn't rank them.
When Venus in the 4th reads hard
Sometimes the home that should feel easy is where the friction lives. Every hard reading below has its condition attached; check the condition before you take the reading as yours.
The clearest is for Gemini rising, because your 4th is Virgo and Venus is debilitated there. The condition: Venus placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, in its fall, or in the twelfth sign36.71. The result, for its years: enmity from your own relatives, affliction to the women of the house, business that loses its returns, and the destruction of cattle and buffaloes36.72. The list runs on into one more line, on wife, children and kin, which we give with the Venus years below, because the same line opens a kinder reading. Today this can look like a stretch of strain with family at home, or a venture that doesn't pay back what you put in. Gemini rising also makes Venus the only kind planet for your chart16.18, but that verse speaks to Venus's role, not to its fall, so it doesn't cancel the list.
The second needs no special sign. A combust Venus, one burned up by the Sun's nearness, has no kind strength left in any house3.52.
The third is a health line. Aries, Scorpio and Virgo rising make Venus the ruler of your 2nd or 7th, and then its years carry bodily affliction36.76. For that fault the verse that follows prescribes chanting to Rudra or the Tryambaka mantra, or the gift of a white cow or she-buffalo, and says health returns36.77. Anything you notice in your body is a question for a doctor.
Your Venus years with Venus in the 4th
In the order of the nine planets' years, Venus comes last35.14, and its stretch is twenty years, longer than any other35.15. If you're inside them now, these are the readings for a Venus placed where yours is.
Because the 4th is a corner, your Venus qualifies for the kind reading. A Venus that is exalted, at home in its own sign, or in a corner reads, for its years, a king's crowning and new vehicles, clothes and jewelry36.67. Add elephants, horses and cattle, good food every day, rule that no one shares and honor from the throne36.68. Then wedding festivities, the well-being and prosperity of children, leading an army, and being reunited with relatives you love36.70. In a life now that can be a car you chose for yourself, a place you finally furnish the way you want, a wedding on the calendar, a team that answers to you, or a cousin back at your table.
Among its readings for the planets' years, the book has a short passage on the 4th house that names Venus outright. It opens on the years when the 4th holds an exalted planet, the lord of a good house, or any kind planet: celebration, festivity, prosperity, and the worship of gods and brahmins, the priest-scholars of the day36.100. It goes on to the gain of vehicles and villages, and plenty of cattle36.101. Then it turns to Venus: if Venus is there, the person is honored with musical instruments such as the mridanga drum, along with tokens of respect36.102. Today a village can be a neighborhood where people know your door, and the honor a home people hope to be invited to.
One verse does double duty. It closes the fallen-Venus list with affliction to wife and children, or a parting from your own kin, and in the same breath opens a second kind reading: Venus ruling the 9th or 10th house and placed in the rising sign or the 4th36.73. With Leo, Virgo, Capricorn or Aquarius rising, that's your Venus. For you its years read great happiness, rule over a country or a village, and building good works like temples and ponds36.74. Joy from feeding others, good food every day, zeal, a growing name, and a wife, children and wealth that prosper come next36.75. A Virgo rising gets this and the bodily-affliction line above, side by side.
With Cancer or Aquarius rising, Venus also rules your 4th, and the years of the 4th's ruler bring a home to live in36.78. Inside the twenty years, each shorter season takes its color from the planet running it; our page on the Venus mahadasha walks through all nine.
Which Venus-in-the-4th chart is yours?
With your Vedic chart in front of you, try these four checks.
Look up your rising sign's row. With Aquarius rising, for example, Venus is the only kind planet for your chart and sits in its own sign in your 4th16.34.
Look for the Sun in your 3rd, 4th or 5th. If it's close enough to make Venus combust, Venus's kind strength is void3.52.
Ask which houses Venus rules for you. Ruling the 9th or 10th sends you to the great-happiness reading of its years36.74; ruling the 2nd or 7th, to the bodily-affliction line36.76.
Note which planet's years are running. If they're Venus's twenty35.15, the years section above is the one to read.
Four checks, one planet. The rest of you (your Moon, the years you're in, the other eleven houses) may back this Venus up or argue with it, and your free personal reading weighs all of it at once, in a page made for you.
What does your home give you that nothing outside it does?
If your rising sign counts Venus as hard, where has comfort cost you more than it gave?
Who do you honor at your table, and who honors you there?
During Venus's years, what has arrived on your doorstep, and what has your family needed from you?
Venus in the 4th house: common questions
Is Venus in the 4th house good in Vedic astrology?
It's Venus's strongest house by direction42.13, and Venus in a corner carries royal marks17.28. Your rising sign decides the rest: Aquarius, Capricorn, Virgo and Gemini count Venus as kind, Libra as even, and the remaining seven as hard.
Does Venus in the 4th house mean I'll own a house?
No verse says so. In the years a kind planet in the 4th runs, the book reads vehicles and villages36.101, and the years of the 4th's ruler a home to live in36.78, which applies when Venus rules your 4th.
What does Venus in the 4th say about my mother?
Nothing directly. The mother is read from the Moon17.62, so look at your Moon, and if it shares your 4th, read the Moon in the 4th house.
What is Venus's directional strength (dig bala)?
A count of how far Venus is from the 10th house: nothing at the 10th, full at the 4th42.13.
Is Venus in Pisces in the 4th house exalted?
Yes, with Sagittarius rising. Venus has full kind strength there3.51, but it is still the one hard planet for a Sagittarius rising chart16.30.
The verses
From the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, with our plain-English reading. Where a verse is in the public-domain Bombay 1899 printing, the page link opens the scan, so you can read it there yourself.
Subtract the 4th house from the Sun and Mars, the 7th from Jupiter and Mercury, the lagna from Saturn, and the 10th (midheaven) from Venus and the Moon; if the remainder exceeds 6 signs, subtract from 12, convert to degrees, and divide by 3 — this gives the dig-bala (directional strength).
दिव्याङ्गनावाहनवस्तुभूषा चिन्ता तु कार्या भृगुणा बुधैद्रैः । तमः शनिभ्यामभिचिन्त्यमायुरर्केण तातःशशिना च माता ॥६२॥
The matter of a fine wife, vehicles, goods, and ornaments should be judged from Venus; longevity from Rahu and Saturn; the father from the Sun; and the mother from the Moon.
Mercury and Jupiter are strong in the east; the Sun and Mars in the south; Saturn in the west; and Venus and the Moon in the north — the directional strengths of the grahas.
The matter of intellect should be judged from Mercury; when these karakas are in their respective houses joined with the house-lords, or have gone to kendras/trikonas, or are seen by [a graha] in its own exaltation, the corresponding significations increase.
Wife, the bow, happiness, treatises on song, poetry, flowers, tender youth, ornaments, silver, vehicles, the heavenly worlds, pearls, prosperity, poetic composition, and aesthetic essence and the like — the karaka is Bhrigu [Venus].
Whatever nakshatra a graha occupies, multiply [the graha's own count] by that nakshatra's ordinal number; multiply the product again by the graha's own navamsha count.
When Venus, in the netrapani state, is in the lagna, 7th, or 10th house, there is certainly harm to the eyes and loss of wealth; in any other house, one instead has a spacious dwelling.
From the 10th house (the house of the sky) one should examine kingship, a livelihood connected with the sky, honor, the father, foreign residence, and debt.
In its own exaltation, a graha's auspicious strength is full; in its moolatrikona, it is full less a quarter; in its own sign it is half; in a friend's sign it is declared to be only a quarter.
In a neutral's sign it is declared to be an eighth; it is void in debilitation, combustion, or an enemy's sign. Likewise the wise should state malefic/inauspicious strength in the reverse order.
To Jupiter: Mercury and Venus are enemies, Saturn is neutral, and the others are friends. To Venus: Mercury and Saturn are friends, Mars and Jupiter are neutral, and the rest are enemies.
अजो वृषो मृगः कन्या कुलीरझषतौलिकाः । सूर्यादीनां क्रमादेतास्तुङ्गसंज्ञाः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥३८॥
Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces, and Libra are declared, in order, to be the signs of exaltation (uchcha) of the Sun and the other grahas.
The precise degree of exaltation for each graha is given by a series of word-numerals; the sign of debilitation (nicha) is the seventh from the exaltation sign, at the same degree already stated (the exact numeric values encoded by the word-numerals in this verse are not fully certain without further cross-reference).
According to these houses, the measure [of strength] of the grahas should be reckoned; the kendra-dosha (kendra-lordship affliction) of the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus increases in that order.
मन्दसौम्यसिताः पापाः शुभौ गुरुदिवाकरौ । न शुभं योगमात्रेण प्रभवेच्छनिजीवयोः ॥१३॥
For Mesha (Aries) lagna: Saturn, Mercury, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Sun are benefic. The mere combination of Saturn and Jupiter does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
Leo, ruled by the Sun, is of sattva-guna, quadruped, of the kshatriya class, strong, rising by its head, large-bodied, pale/tawny, and strong in the earlier part of the day.
For Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna: Jupiter, Venus, and the Moon are malefic; Saturn and the Sun are benefic. The one Raja-yoga-karaka is Saturn (रवेः सुतः, "son of the Sun") alone, directly.
Associated with grain and fire, of the vaishya class, of variegated color, windy (restless) in nature; a maiden, joined with tamas, of youthful disposition, and ruled by Mercury.
For Mithuna (Gemini) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun are malefic; Venus alone is benefic. The combination of Saturn and Jupiter [here] gives results the same way as [described] for one born in Mesha lagna.
Head-rising, endowed with strength by day, of the shudra class, of rajo-guna; ruled by Venus, lord of the west, of medium body, and biped — this is Tula (Libra).
For Karka (Cancer) lagna: Venus and Mercury are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत, "son of the earth") alone becomes the Raja-yoga-karaka, directly.
Head-rising, small-bodied, many-legged, of the brahmin class, strong, associated with the benefics, strong by day, tawny-colored, moving through water and earth; abundant in bristles and extremely sharp-limbed — this is Vrishchika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars.
बुधशुक्रार्कजाः पापाः भौमेज्यार्काः शुभप्रदाः । प्रभवेद्योगमात्रेण न शुभं गुरुशुक्रयोः ॥२२॥
For Simha (Leo) lagna: Mercury, Venus, and Saturn (अर्कज, "son of the Sun") are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun give auspicious results. The mere combination of Jupiter and Venus does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
BPHS 2.17
अश्वजङ्घो त्वथ धनुर्गुरू स्वामी च सात्त्विकः ॥१७॥
Having the shanks of a horse (the sign Dhanu, Sagittarius); ruled by Jupiter, and of sattva-guna.
Dhanu, continued: situated in the east, roaming the earth, radiant, and rising by its back. Then, for Makara (Capricorn): ruled by Saturn, of tamas, earthy, south-dwelling, and strong by night.
Mars is the maraka; Jupiter and the other [aforesaid grahas] carry the character of marakas [through association], and are inauspicious in their effects; Venus (काव्य) gives even/neutral results — so it should be known for one born under Tula.
Venus's moolatrikona spans fifteen degrees of Libra, the rest of Libra being its own sign; Saturn's moolatrikona spans twenty degrees of Aquarius, the rest being its own sign.
For Vrishchika (Scorpio) lagna: Mercury, Mars, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Moon are benefic. The Sun and the Moon together become the Yoga-karakas.
सुराचार्याधिपश्चास्य राशीनां गदितं मया । त्रिंशद्भागात्मकः स्थूलसूक्ष्माकरफलाय च ॥२४॥
Its ruler is Jupiter (suracharya, teacher of the gods). Thus have the natures of the signs been declared; each consists of thirty degrees, for the purpose of both gross and subtle results.
For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna: Venus alone is malefic; Mercury and the Sun are benefic. Their combination (Sun and Mercury) is a Raja-yoga; the maraka is Saturn (भास्करसुत, "son of the Sun").
Dwelling in the east, of royal kinship, roaming the mountains, of rajo-guna, rising by its back (prishthodaya), and of fiery nature — the sign Aries is ruled by Mars.
For Makara (Capricorn) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are malefic; Venus and Mercury (चन्द्रज, "son of the Moon") are benefic. Saturn is itself the maraka; Mars and the other [aforesaid malefics act as marakas] through association.
White, ruled by Venus, long-bodied, quadruped, strong by night, dwelling in the south, domesticated, of the merchant class, earthy, female, and rising by its back — this is Taurus.
For Kumbha (Aquarius) lagna: Jupiter, the Moon, and Mars are malefic; Venus (दैत्यगुरु, "teacher of the demons") alone is benefic. Venus is the Raja-yoga-karaka, together with Mars and Jupiter.
शीर्षोदयी नृमिथुनं सगदं च सवीणकम् । प्रत्यक्स्वामी द्विपाद्रात्रिबली ग्राम्याग्रगोऽनिली ॥९॥
Rising by its head, depicted as a pair of humans — one bearing a mace, the other a vina — ruled by Mercury (whose direction is west), biped, strong by night, foremost among domesticated creatures, and of airy nature — this is Gemini.
For Meena (Pisces) lagna: Saturn, Venus, and the Sun are malefic; Mercury, Mars, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत) and Jupiter together become the Yoga-karakas.
Grahas occupying certain houses relative to one another (per the scheme given) are to be known as temporary (tatkalika) friends at that time; in the remaining houses they are temporary non-friends.
When enmity and friendship combine, the result is neutral; when enemy and enemy combine, it becomes a 'great enemy' (adhishatru). Thus the wise describe five grades of relationship (panchadha-maitri) among the grahas.
BPHS 17.64
स्वकीये स्वांशगे स्वोच्चे सुखस्थानस्थितो यदि । सुखवाहनवृद्धिः स्याच्छङ्खभेर्यादिवाद्ययुक् ॥६४॥
If [the 4th-lord] is situated in the house of happiness in its own sign, its own navamsha, or its own exaltation, there is an increase of happiness and vehicles, accompanied by conches, drums, and other festive instruments.
Those [malefics] carry the character of marakas; Venus alone is the giver of a good yoga — these results should be known by the wise for one born under Mriga (Capricorn).
नष्टराज्याद्धनप्राप्तिर्गृहे गोधनसंग्रहम्। षष्ठाष्टमव्यये शुक्रे नीचे वा व्ययराशिगे।।७१।।
Gain of wealth from a lost kingdom, and accumulation of cattle-wealth in the household [occur, closing the favorable results]. When Venus is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, or debilitated, or in the 12th sign —
Hostility from one's own kin, and affliction to the women of the household; loss of results from business, and destruction of cattle, buffaloes, and the like.
In its own bhukti (sub-period), the result is thus [as described]; [similar] results apply in [its] other bhuktis as well. But if Venus is the lord of the 2nd or 7th house, bodily affliction will occur.
तद्दोष परिहारार्थ रुद्रं वा त्र्यम्बकं जपेत्। श्वेतां गां महिषष्ठीं दद्यादारोग्यं च भविष्यति।।७७।।
For the removal of that fault, one should recite [the mantra to] Rudra or the Tryambaka mantra; giving a white cow or a she-buffalo, health will result.
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu (tamas), Jupiter (vakpati), Saturn, Mercury (manda-chandra-ja), Ketu, and Venus — these, in order, should be known as the dasha-lords.
[Their dasha periods, encoded as number-words, are, in order:] six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven, and twenty years, respectively held [as the dasha-years for Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and Venus].
Now the results of Venus' dasha: when Venus is in its supreme exaltation, its own exaltation, its own sign, or a kendra — the attainment of royal coronation (nrupa-abhisheka), and [the gain of] vehicles, garments, and ornaments [result].
BPHS 36.68
गजाश्वपशुलाभं च नित्यं मिष्टान्नभोजनम्। अखंडमंडलाधीशराजसन्मानवैभवम्।।६८।।
Gain of elephants, horses, and cattle, and daily fine food; the gain of undivided territorial rule and royal honor and prosperity.
There is celebration, festivity, prosperity, and worship of gods and brahmins, when in the 4th house there are exalted planets, or the lord of a benefic house, or any benefic planet.
There is gain of vehicles and villages, and abundant increase of cattle; if it is the Moon there, there is attainment of one's desire, accompanied by much grain and produce.
If the Moon is full, there is attainment of buried treasure, or one gains a store of jewels; if it is Venus there, one is honored with musical instruments such as the mridanga, along with tokens of respect.
दारपुत्रादिपीडा वा आत्मवन्धु वियोगकृत्। भाग्यकर्माधिपत्येन लग्नवाहनराशिगे।।७३।।
Affliction to wife and children, or separation from one's own kin, [occurs]. When Venus, being the 9th or 10th lord, is situated in the lagna or the 4th house (vahana-rashi) —
In that dasha, great happiness, and lordship over a country or village [occur]; the undertaking of meritorious works such as temples, ponds, and the like [results].
The dasha of the lagna-lord gives strength and abundant wealth; that of the 2nd lord (vitteshitu), death or hardship; that of the brother-house's lord (3rd), malefic results for the most part. The dasha of the 4th lord brings [domestic] dwelling; that of the wisdom-house's lord (5th), the happiness of learning; that of the disease-house's lord (6th), fear from enemies; that of the wife-house's lord (7th), grief.
