Mahadasha and antardasha meaning: your years and seasons
What mahadasha and antardasha mean in Vedic astrology: each planet's years, the seasons inside them, their order, and how the two combine, verse by verse.

A mahadasha is one planet's long stretch of your life, your Venus years or your Saturn years, and an antardasha is a shorter season inside it, run by each of the nine planets in turn. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, a centuries-old Sanskrit text, gives the nine planets their order and their years35.14,35.15.
Your years are only one layer of your chart. The planet running them sits in a sign and a house, with company, and that decides what its years hold for you. Your free personal reading reads your whole chart together and writes what it finds as a page about you.
What is a mahadasha, in plain words?
Think of your life as a playlist whose order was set the minute you were born. Each planet gets a block of years, plays it out, and hands over to the next. You don't skip a track; you live through it, and it colors those years.
That block is the mahadasha; maha means great. On this site we call it a planet's years: your Rahu years, your Jupiter years. The nine planets run in this order: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus35.14. They hold six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven and twenty years35.15. Add them up and the full cycle is 120 years.
The text knows many ways to time a life. It names the Vimshottari first35.2 and counts forty-two kinds of dasha in all35.11. This page sticks to the Vimshottari, the one the order and years above belong to, and the one our readings use.
What is an antardasha?
Inside each planet's years, all nine planets take a turn. Each of those shorter stretches is an antardasha; antar means inner. We call it a season: the Mercury season of your Saturn years.
The length comes in one line. Multiply the two planets' years together and divide by ten: the answer is the season in months, and the remainder, times thirty and divided by ten again, gives the days37.1. So Venus's own season in Venus's years is 20 × 20 ÷ 10, forty months, or three years and four months. The Sun's own season in the Sun's years is 6 × 6 ÷ 10: three months and eighteen days. The nine seasons always add up to the planet's full years.
Why bother with seasons? Because the antardasha is the finer reading. After the years are worked out, the text says the wise should work out the season too, for fine-grained results35.55. And it asks you to read each planet's own season by how well that planet is placed36.127.
You can keep dividing. A season splits into smaller pieces the same way, again and again, for still finer results36.128. Software often calls the next level down a pratyantar dasha.
In what order do the antardashas run?
Each planet's years open with that planet's own season. The other eight follow in the same cycle as the years, wrapping around from Venus back to the Sun.
You can see the order in how the text reads the seasons. In Saturn's years it reads Saturn's own season first37.391, then Mercury's37.397, then Ketu's37.405, following the cycle. In Venus's years it starts with Venus's own37.610 and moves straight to the Sun's37.620, because the Sun comes after Venus once the cycle wraps.
So the last season of any planet's years always belongs to the planet just before it in the cycle. The last season of your Venus years is Ketu's; the last of your Saturn years is Jupiter's.
How do you find which mahadasha you're in?
It starts with your Moon. Your Moon at birth sits in one of 27 star-groups, the nakshatras, and the text counts them from Krittika up to yours to find which planet's years you were born into35.12. The precise method takes the Moon's position in minutes of arc and divides by 800, the width of one nakshatra. What's left over tells you how much of that first planet's years had already passed, and so how much was still to run35.17.
That's why your birth time matters. The Moon moves about one nakshatra a day, so a few hours can shift the date your first years end by months or even years. Our page on nakshatras walks through the arithmetic with a worked Moon.
Once you know the planet you started in and how much of its years were left, the rest follows the fixed order. Your first change of years might come at age three or at sixteen, and every change after that is set.
What does each planet's mahadasha mean?
Each planet's years have a strong version and a weak one, and the strong one comes with conditions. Here is the strong version of each, with its conditions, in the order the years run. Each planet with a page of its own on this site is linked. The verses speak of kind planets (benefics) and harsh ones (malefics) without listing them here; your reading works out which is which for your chart.
All of this is the text's reading, offered for reflection. It isn't a forecast or advice, and real decisions about health, money, children or family belong with a doctor, an adviser or the people involved.
The Sun: six years
When the Sun is in its moolatrikona, own sign or exaltation, in an angle, a trine or the 11th, and joined with the rulers of the 9th and 10th36.2, its years bring children, intelligence and wisdom, a rise in status, knowledge, wealth, fame and courage36.1. A planet's moolatrikona is its strongest stretch of its own ground; an angle is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, a trine the 5th or 9th.
The Moon: ten years
When the Moon is exalted or in its own sign, in an angle, the 11th or a trine, with a kind planet, waxing and strong36.13, the years bring the mother's welfare, fields and gardens, houses, a seat of standing, wealth and fame36.12.
Mars: seven years
When Mars is exalted, in its moolatrikona or own sign, or in an angle, a trine, the 11th or the 2nd36.23, with full strength, a kind planet's aspect and a kind planet's sign in the partner chart (the navamsa, D9), the years bring land, wealth and grain36.24. Our page on Mars in the 11th house reads them for one placement.
Rahu: eighteen years
In Rahu's own house, Virgo, the years bring much happiness and plenty36.30: aims reached through friends and superiors, vehicles, a child, a new house, and big celebrations36.31. More in your Rahu years.
Jupiter: sixteen years
When Jupiter is exalted or in its own sign, in an angle, the 11th or a trine, in its moolatrikona, or exalted or in its own sign in the partner chart36.38, the years bring a kingdom, great happiness, honor and renown36.39. More in your Jupiter years.
Saturn: nineteen years
When Saturn is exalted, in its own sign or a friend's, in its moolatrikona or the 9th house, or exalted or in its own sign in the partner chart36.45, or in the 3rd or 11th, the years bring honor, prosperity, a good name, wealth and a love of learned talk36.46. More in your Saturn years.
Mercury: seventeen years
When Mercury is exalted or in its own sign, in an angle, the 11th or a trine, or in a friend's sign, its years bring great happiness36.53, with wealth, a good name, knowledge and a ruler's favor36.54. More in your Mercury years.
Ketu: seven years
When Ketu is in an angle, the 11th or a trine, or in a kind sign looked at by kind planets, or exalted, or in a kind planet's division of the chart36.61, the years bring a ruler's affection, a lifted mind, charge of a place, vehicles, a child, and happy travel abroad36.62. More in your Ketu years.
Venus: twenty years
When Venus is in its deepest exaltation, its exaltation, its own sign or an angle36.67, the years bring a crowning, vehicles, clothes and ornaments, fine food every day, and honor36.68. More in your Venus years.
Read today, a crowning can be the promotion that makes you the boss, and a ruler's favor the manager who fights for you.
How do the mahadasha and antardasha combine?
The planet running your years sets the ground. The planet running your season decides how that stretch feels on it. The question is whether the two are friends.
A season run by a friend of the years' planet goes well, whether they're friends by nature or by where they sit in your chart36.120. A season run by an unfriendly planet brings hardship to the things it works against36.121. Our page on planet friends and enemies lists who gets on with whom.
When in your years do the results come?
The sign a planet sits in decides whether its years deliver at the start, in the middle or at the end.
Planets in the head-rising signs give their results at the start of their years; a planet in the sign that rises both ways gives them in the middle36.119. Rising both ways is how the text describes Pisces. Planets in the back-rising signs give theirs at the end36.120. The twelve signs sort like this:
So if your Saturn is in Capricorn, a back-rising sign, its nineteen years are read as saving their results for the end. Patience is built into that reading.
Which years read hard?
The hard ones are named plainly. The years of the rulers of your 6th, 8th and 12th houses bring hardship37.9. Which planets those are depends on your rising sign. The text also discusses illness and longevity here; we leave that out, and any health worry belongs with a doctor.
A planet's years also read hard when the planet is weak. The six planets with their own pages here have the conditions for that case in full.
How are dashas different from Western astrology?
Western astrology times your life mostly by transits, where the planets are moving now against your birth chart. The Saturn return around age 29 is the famous one, and everyone born the same year gets it at about the same age.
The Vedic years work differently. They're personal: your sequence starts from your own Moon, so your friends born the same month can be in Rahu's years while you're in Jupiter's. And they're laid out in advance. Once your first planet is known, you can see every change of years for the rest of your life.
Vedic charts also count signs against the stars, which puts every planet back by about 24 degrees from a Western chart, the drift caused by axial precession. Your Moon's nakshatra comes from that Vedic position, so check it there, not in a Western chart. Sidereal vs tropical explains the shift.
Which years are you in, and what do they ask?
Four checks tell you what your own years are made of:
Find your Moon's nakshatra. Counted from Krittika, it names the planet whose years you were born into35.12.
Find where that planet, or the one running your years now, sits. Its sign and house decide whether you're living the strong version; Saturn's, for example, wants its exaltation, its own sign or a friend's, or the 9th house36.45, or the 3rd or 11th36.46.
See whether it rules your 6th, 8th or 12th house, the years the text reads as hard37.9.
Check your current season. A friend of your years' planet runs a good one36.120.
None of these can be read from a Sun sign. Your free personal reading starts from the minute you were born and reads all of it together.
Questions to sit with
Looking back, where did one stretch of your life clearly hand over to the next?
Which recent season felt different from the years around it, better or harder?
If your current years save their results for the end, what are you building now?
Who were the people who backed you in your best stretch, and are they still close?
Mahadasha and antardasha: quick answers
How many years is each mahadasha?
The Sun six, the Moon ten, Mars seven, Rahu eighteen, Jupiter sixteen, Saturn nineteen, Mercury seventeen, Ketu seven and Venus twenty35.15.
Which is more powerful, mahadasha or antardasha?
The years set the ground and the season is the finer reading35.55. A season goes well when its planet is a friend of the years' planet36.120.
What is the antardasha sequence?
Each planet's years open with its own season, then follow the same order as the years, as the text's own reading of Saturn's seasons shows37.391,37.397.
Is it bad if the two planets are 6-8 from each other?
The verses we read give no single rule for it, though some seasons turn on it. In the Sun's years, for example, Mars in the 6th or 8th from the Sun, joined with or looked at by the harsh planets, reads as a loss of authority and strength, a cruel turn of mind and mental strain37.36. Strain like that is a doctor's to look at, not a chart's.
What is a pratyantar dasha?
A season divided again in the same way, for finer results36.128.
Is a Saturn mahadasha always bad?
No. Saturn's strong years bring honor and wealth36.46. Our page is Saturn bad? reads both sides.
Can I find my mahadasha without a birth time?
Roughly. The Moon moves about one nakshatra a day, so a birth date alone can leave your first years uncertain by months or years, and sometimes by which planet you started in.
From the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, with our plain-English reading. Where a verse is in the public-domain Bombay 1899 printing, the page link opens the scan, so you can read it there yourself.
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu (tamas), Jupiter (vakpati), Saturn, Mercury (manda-chandra-ja), Ketu, and Venus — these, in order, should be known as the dasha-lords.
[Their dasha periods, encoded as number-words, are, in order:] six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven, and twenty years, respectively held [as the dasha-years for Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and Venus].
Now the varieties of Dasha are stated: hereafter I shall declare the many varieties of Dasha. Vimshottari Dasha is spoken of, and likewise Shodashottari Dasha.
The Sandhya Dasha should also be known, and the Pachaka Dasha, O twice-born. There are forty-two varieties [in total] — I shall now declare them from the beginning [in detail].
[The antardasha] should be made by multiplying the [sub-lord's] dasha[-years] by the [main] dasha[-lord's years]; division by ten should be performed. The quotient gives months, and the remainder, multiplied by thirty [and again divided by ten], gives days.
The elapsed (bhukta) portion of the dasha should be known proportionally, by each [system's] own reckoning. The wise should likewise work out the antardasha (sub-period) as well, for the sake of fine-grained (sukshma) predictions.
BPHS 36.127
One should infer differing results according to the difference between favorable and unfavorable placement; thus, for all planets, one should likewise examine each one's own antardasha.
Having computed the raashi-bhukti reckoned from one's own sign, one should declare the result; in this same way, by dividing one's own antardasha again and again [into finer sub-periods, still more subtle results may be derived].
In Saturn's mahadasha, Saturn's own antardasha: when Saturn is in its own mulatrikona, own sign, or exalted in Libra, or in a kendra, trikona, or the 11th, joined so as to form a rajayoga —
In Saturn's mahadasha, Mercury's antardasha: when Mercury is in a trikona or a kendra, there is honor, fame, renown, gain of learning, and the arrival of wealth.
In Saturn's mahadasha, Ketu's antardasha: when Ketu, joined with and aspected by benefics, is in its own exaltation or an auspicious sign, joined with a yogakaraka —
In Venus's mahadasha, Venus's own antardasha: when Venus, strong, is in a kendra or trikona from the lagna, or in the 11th, a powerful yoga is declared.
In Venus's mahadasha, Sun's antardasha: there is distress, hostility from the king, quarrels with claimants to one's estate, and also disputes in dealings.
Now Vimshottari Dasha is stated: listen, O best of the twice-born, to the method of deriving it. [Nakshatras are counted] from Krittika onward up to one's own birth-nakshatra.
An alternate, more precise method: form the true Moon's longitude in kala (minutes of arc), and divide by 800 to get the elapsed nakshatra. From that, determine the dasha; multiply the remainder by the dasha's total years and divide again by 800 to get the elapsed months, etc.; subtracting this from the dasha's years gives the remaining (bhogya) years, etc.
[If the Sun is] in its mulatrikona, own sign, its own exaltation, or supreme exaltation (parama-uccha) — situated in a kendra, trikona, or the 11th house, and conjoined with the 9th and 10th lords —
Now the chapter on the results of the dashas: first, by the Vimshottari system, the results of the Sun's mahadasha. An excellent (strong) dasha of the Sun brings sons, intelligence, wisdom, elevation of authority/status, gain of knowledge, wealth, fame, valor, and happiness, by the grace of the Lord. A malefic (weak) dasha of the Sun brings failure in undertakings, loss of wealth, illness, fear from royal displeasure, disturbances, affliction, and danger from fire.
[If the Moon is] in its own exaltation or its own sign, situated in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, conjoined with a benefic graha, and waxing (vriddhi) and endowed with strength —
Now the results of the Moon's dasha: an excellent dasha of the Moon brings the mother's welfare, [gain of] ponds and the like, fields, gardens, houses, seats/status, excellent brahmins, wealth, fame, and the comfort of a palanquin. A malefic dasha of the Moon brings loss of food, miserliness, endless loss of wealth, disease, loss of wisdom, disgrace, danger to the mother's life, disturbance, and severe cold-fever.
Now the results of Mars' dasha: when Mars is in its supreme exaltation, its own exaltation, its mulatrikona, or its own sign, situated in a kendra, a trikona, the 11th, or even the 2nd house —
[If Mars is] endowed with full strength, aspected by benefics, and in a benefic's navamsha — it brings gain of kingdom, gain of land, and gain of wealth, grain, and the like.
Virgo is declared to be [Rahu's] own house, and Pisces is remembered as [Ketu's] own house. In the dasha of [a node] situated in its own house, much happiness, and wealth of grain and other prosperity, [result].
Through friends and superiors, desired accomplishments; [the comfort of] vehicles, the birth of a son, the construction of a new house, thoughts of dharma, and great celebrations [occur].
Now the results of Jupiter's dasha: when Jupiter is in its own exaltation or own sign, situated in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or in its mulatrikona or the 11th, or in an exaltation-navamsha or its own navamsha —
[Such a dasha brings] gain of kingdom, great happiness, royal honor and renown; being endowed with elephants and horses, and the worship of gods and brahmins.
Now the results of Saturn's dasha: if Saturn is in its own exaltation, own sign, or a friend's sign, or in its mulatrikona or the 9th house, or in an exaltation-navamsha or its own navamsha —
Now the results of Mercury's dasha: when Mercury is in its own exaltation or own sign, situated in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or joined with a friend's sign — in the dasha of this benefic (saumya), great happiness [results].
Gain of wealth, grain, and the like, good fame, and increase of wealth and prosperity; abundance of knowledge, the king's favor, and growth in virtuous deeds and qualities [occur].
Now the results of Ketu's dasha: when Ketu is in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or in a benefic sign aspected by benefics, or in its own exaltation, or in a benefic's varga — [its dasha brings] the king's affection and mental enthusiasm.
BPHS 36.62
Lordship over a country or village, [gain of] vehicles, and the birth of a son; travel to another land, bringing happiness in that other land.
Now the results of Venus' dasha: when Venus is in its supreme exaltation, its own exaltation, its own sign, or a kendra — the attainment of royal coronation (nrupa-abhisheka), and [the gain of] vehicles, garments, and ornaments [result].
BPHS 36.68
Gain of elephants, horses, and cattle, and daily fine food; the gain of undivided territorial rule and royal honor and prosperity.
Planets situated in prishthodaya (back-rising) signs give their result at the end of their own dasha; and, whether by natural (naisargika) or temporal (tatkalika) friendship, in the antardasha of a friend there is auspiciousness.
[In the antardasha of] an unfriendly planet, hardship results for those [affairs] running contrary to it. [The antardasha sequence of signs] is derived beginning from the house occupied by the dasha-lord, running through the twelve signs.
Planets situated in shirshodaya (head-rising) signs give their own result at the beginning of their respective dasha; those situated in ubhayodaya/dvisvabhava (dual, 'both-rising') signs give their result in the middle [of the dasha].
Rising by its head, depicted as a pair of humans — one bearing a mace, the other a vina — ruled by Mercury (whose direction is west), biped, strong by night, foremost among domesticated creatures, and of airy nature — this is Gemini.
Leo, ruled by the Sun, is of sattva-guna, quadruped, of the kshatriya class, strong, rising by its head, large-bodied, pale/tawny, and strong in the earlier part of the day.
Head-rising, endowed with strength by day, of the shudra class, of rajo-guna; ruled by Venus, lord of the west, of medium body, and biped — this is Tula (Libra).
Head-rising, small-bodied, many-legged, of the brahmin class, strong, associated with the benefics, strong by day, tawny-colored, moving through water and earth; abundant in bristles and extremely sharp-limbed — this is Vrishchika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars.
Kumbha (Aquarius) is depicted as a man bearing a water-pot, tawny-brown in color, of medium body, biped, strong by day, situated amid the waters, of airy nature, head-rising, and tamasic.
Dwelling in the east, of royal kinship, roaming the mountains, of rajo-guna, rising by its back (prishthodaya), and of fiery nature — the sign Aries is ruled by Mars.
White, ruled by Venus, long-bodied, quadruped, strong by night, dwelling in the south, domesticated, of the merchant class, earthy, female, and rising by its back — this is Taurus.
Dhanu, continued: situated in the east, roaming the earth, radiant, and rising by its back. Then, for Makara (Capricorn): ruled by Saturn, of tamas, earthy, south-dwelling, and strong by night.
Back-rising, large-bodied — Makara moves through both water and earth; quadruped in its first half and, in its latter half, biped, considered to move through water.
Watery, abounding in sattva-guna, self-possessed, aquatic, of the brahmin class; footless, of medium body, gentle in disposition, and rising in both ways (ubhayodaya).
Now I shall speak in particular of the dasha that brings hardship to people: the dasha of the lords of the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses is hardship-bringing.
BPHS 37.36
