You already know Venus as the part of a chart that holds love, beauty, money and taste. A centuries-old Sanskrit text, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, gives that same planet something your Western chart does not: twenty years of your life to rule, the largest share of the nine. What it reads into those years turns on where your Venus sits. Exalted, in a sign of its own, or in one of the four strongest houses, it reads a rise in standing, a car, good clothes, a home that looks the way you want it to36.67. In the 6th, 8th or 12th, or in its sign of debility, the same twenty years read as friction inside the family and loss in business36.72.
So the question these verses answer is not whether the Venus years are good. It is which Venus you are living it with.
Twenty years, the longest share of the nine
This system hands your life to nine rulers in a fixed order: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus35.14. Their shares are six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven and twenty years, so Venus holds the longest stretch any planet gets35.15. Where you enter the cycle is set not by your Sun sign or your rising sign but by the lunar mansion your Moon held at birth, counted from Krittika35.12. Follow that count and Venus takes Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha. If your Moon falls in one of those, you arrived with your Venus years already running and some of them used up. If not, they reach you after Ketu's seven years and hand over to the Sun.
Twenty years is long enough to build a home, a marriage and a working name, and long enough to have to keep them, which is why the condition of your Venus colors more of an adult life here than any other planet's years. If you came to Vedic astrology through the sidereal signs, this is the other half of the surprise: a chart is read through the years each planet rules, not only through transits.
What a well-placed Venus is read to give across those years
Take a Venus in its highest exaltation, in a sign it owns, or in an angle house. The text reads a coronation, with vehicles, fine clothes and ornaments36.67; elephants, horses and cattle, good food every day, rule over undivided territory, honor from the throne36.68; drums and music in the house, and the goddess of fortune's kind eye on it36.69. Then wedding celebrations, children who do well, command of an army, and a reunion with family you love36.70. The kind list closes on a line worth sitting with: wealth regained from a kingdom that was lost36.71.
Read today, the court language points at ordinary things. A coronation can be the role you had been working toward, handed to you in public; command of an army, the first time people report to you. Wealth from a lost kingdom is the strangest: something you once had and gave up — a position, a business, a city — coming back in another shape.
The one placement this text singles out
One case gets its own verses. If Venus rules your 9th or 10th house and sits in your rising sign or your 4th36.73, the text reads great happiness and charge of a region, with public works built in your name36.74, happiness that comes through feeding other people, a name that grows, and wife, children and wealth all doing well36.75.
Notice what that case is made of: not Venus's sign, but which parts of your chart Venus is responsible for. A planet can be weak by sign and still rule your luck or your work, and this book weighs the second as heavily as the first — the weighing our method sets out.
When these twenty years read hard
The verses turn on their conditions, and they do not soften when they turn. Venus in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or in its sign of debility36.71, and the text reads hostility from your own family, trouble for the women of the household, loss in business, and the loss of cattle and buffaloes36.72 — and trouble for wife and children, or a parting from your own people36.73.
Three things keep that in proportion.
It is conditional. Those lines belong to a Venus hidden in the 6th, 8th or 12th or debilitated — the mirror of the strong case above, not a sentence on everyone whose Moon fell in Bharani.
It speaks a household's language. Loss of cattle was the loss of a family's working wealth; today it can read as income that dries up. A parting from your own people can be a move away, or a quarrel that keeps a family apart for a while.
One verse is never the whole chart. The 9th or 10th lord case above can lift even a Venus the general rule reads as weak, and the seasons below change the picture again.
One more condition: if Venus rules your 2nd or 7th house, its years are read as bringing strain on the body, in its own season and in the others36.76. The text is describing a placement here, not forecasting your life. Where they touch the body or money they are not advice, and a real worry belongs with a doctor or an adviser.
Venus in Pisces, the sign these verses name
Only one sign gets a line of its own. Venus in Pisces, standing in a trine house, is read as a kingdom, wealth and a house of your own36.69 — Pisces is Venus's exaltation sign here, which is why the verse names it. The other eleven go by the conditions above.
What the text offers instead of a stone
For the strain named above, the verses give their own response: reciting the Rudra or Tryambaka mantra, and the gift of a white cow or a she-buffalo36.77. That is a practice and an act of giving, as the text gives it — never medical or financial advice. No stone, no ring and no paid ritual appears in these verses.
The nine seasons inside Venus's twenty years
The twenty years pass through nine seasons, each with its own ruler, and Venus's own season comes first. A strong Venus in an angle, a trine or the 11th is called a powerful combination37.610, read as gain of wealth and cattle, celebrations for children, and a settled home37.611. In the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th with kind planets on it, travel west brings vehicles and clothes37.615.
Then the others, in the order the text lists them:
The Sun. Hard by default: distress, trouble with people in authority, quarrels over property, disputes in dealings37.620. Exalted, in its own or a friend's sign, or well placed from Venus37.621, it turns to wealth, a happy household, and family coming back together37.622.
The Moon. In an angle, a trine or the 11th, or full and with a kind planet37.628: vehicles and children37.629. Debilitated, lost in the Sun's glare, or hidden37.632, it reads loss of wealth and great fear37.633.
Mars. In an angle or trine, exalted, or strong in the 11th37.638, with the ruler of the rising sign, the 9th or the 10th: splendid prosperity37.639.
Rahu. With kind planets looking at it in an angle, a trine or the 11th37.644: wealth, grain, family around you37.645; in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th the season reads as a happy one37.646. With harsh planets in the 6th or 12th from Venus37.650, it reads trouble touching your parents and hostility on every side37.651.
Jupiter. Exalted, in its own sign, or in an angle37.653: wealth from something recovered, and honor from friends and from the people you work for37.654.
Saturn. Exalted, in its own sign, or in an angle or trine37.660: happiness with family, esteem, and in the text's words the possible birth of a daughter37.661. Reversed, it reads affliction37.662. Saturn's own nineteen years work the same way, in the Saturn years.
Mercury. In an angle, a trine or the 11th, or exalted: favor from above37.666. Weak, hidden from Venus, with harsh planets37.669, it reads living in someone else's house, an unsteady mind, and losses in trade37.670.
Ketu. Exalted or with a yogakaraka — a planet ruling both a strong angle and a strong trine37.673 — it opens with plenty and more profit from your work37.674. Its own seven years run just before Venus's, in the Ketu years.
So no one gets twenty uniform years. A weak Venus can hold a Jupiter season the text reads kindly, and a strong one a Sun season it reads hard. The lines above about children, parents or money belong to a placement, not to your family or your accounts.
Three tests for your own Venus
In order: the sign, where exalted or own-sign leans one way36.67 and debilitated the other36.71. The house, where an angle is the strong case and the 6th, 8th and 12th the hidden one36.72. Then what Venus rules: the 9th or 10th lifts all twenty years36.73, the 2nd or 7th brings the strain the text names36.76. After that, take each season's ruler on its own placement.
Most charts land between the two pictures, which is why a single verdict on Venus's years is worth little. The same three tests work for any planet's years — the North Node's eighteen years are the clearest case — and the whole library is built that way.
Questions to sit with in your Venus years
The kind readings here are about having and keeping: a home, a partnership, a name. Which of those are you building, and which only maintaining?
"Wealth regained from a lost kingdom" — is there something you set down that is asking to come back?
The hard readings land inside the family, not outside it. Where do you spend your patience most carelessly?
If Venus rules your 9th or 10th, these years are read as public ones. What would you want your name attached to?

How long is Venus mahadasha?
Twenty years, the longest of the nine35.15, and they open when the Ketu years close, in the fixed order35.14.
What happens during it?
That depends on your Venus. The text gives a strong one a rise in standing, a home, celebrations and a name36.67,36.70, and a hidden or debilitated one friction in the family and loss in business36.72. No outcome comes without a condition attached.
Is Venus dasha good for everyone?
No, and the verses say so plainly: the same twenty years read one way for an exalted Venus in an angle and the opposite way for a debilitated Venus in the 8th36.67,36.71.
Which planet's years are the luckiest, and which the hardest?
This text ranks none of the nine. It conditions every one on sign, house and lordship, which is a different claim from "Venus is lucky".
What are the antardashas of Venus mahadasha?
Nine seasons, one for each ruler, Venus's own first37.610, then the Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Ketu, each read by where that planet sits in your chart.
Is there a remedy?
Only what the verses name: a mantra and a gift36.77. No stone appears in them.
Are these twenty years yours?

Now the results of Venus' dasha: when Venus is in its supreme exaltation, its own exaltation, its own sign, or a kendra — the attainment of royal coronation (nrupa-abhisheka), and [the gain of] vehicles, garments, and ornaments [result].
Hostility from one's own kin, and affliction to the women of the household; loss of results from business, and destruction of cattle, buffaloes, and the like.
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu (tamas), Jupiter (vakpati), Saturn, Mercury (manda-chandra-ja), Ketu, and Venus — these, in order, should be known as the dasha-lords.
[Their dasha periods, encoded as number-words, are, in order:] six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven, and twenty years, respectively held [as the dasha-years for Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and Venus].
अथ विंशोत्तरीदशामाह। आनयनप्रकारं च शृणुष्व द्विजपुङ्गव। नामनक्षत्रपर्यन्तमाक्षादि कृत्तिकादितः।।१२।।
Now Vimshottari Dasha is stated: listen, O best of the twice-born, to the method of deriving it. [Nakshatras are counted] from Krittika onward up to one's own birth-nakshatra.
मृदङ्गवाद्ययोगं च गृहेलक्ष्मीकटाक्षकृत्। त्रिकोणस्थे मीन शुक्रे राज्वार्थगृहसम्पदः।।६९।।
The enjoyment of drums and musical instruments, and Lakshmi's favorable glance upon the household [occur]; when Venus is in Pisces, situated in a trikona, [it brings] kingdom, wealth, house, and prosperity.
नष्टराज्याद्धनप्राप्तिर्गृहे गोधनसंग्रहम्। षष्ठाष्टमव्यये शुक्रे नीचे वा व्ययराशिगे।।७१।।
Gain of wealth from a lost kingdom, and accumulation of cattle-wealth in the household [occur, closing the favorable results]. When Venus is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house, or debilitated, or in the 12th sign —
दारपुत्रादिपीडा वा आत्मवन्धु वियोगकृत्। भाग्यकर्माधिपत्येन लग्नवाहनराशिगे।।७३।।
Affliction to wife and children, or separation from one's own kin, [occurs]. When Venus, being the 9th or 10th lord, is situated in the lagna or the 4th house (vahana-rashi) —
In that dasha, great happiness, and lordship over a country or village [occur]; the undertaking of meritorious works such as temples, ponds, and the like [results].
In its own bhukti (sub-period), the result is thus [as described]; [similar] results apply in [its] other bhuktis as well. But if Venus is the lord of the 2nd or 7th house, bodily affliction will occur.
तद्दोष परिहारार्थ रुद्रं वा त्र्यम्बकं जपेत्। श्वेतां गां महिषष्ठीं दद्यादारोग्यं च भविष्यति।।७७।।
For the removal of that fault, one should recite [the mantra to] Rudra or the Tryambaka mantra; giving a white cow or a she-buffalo, health will result.
भृगोरन्तर्गते शुक्रे लग्नात्केन्द्रत्रिकोणगे। लाभे वा बलसंयुक्ते योगप्राबल्यमादिशेत्।।१।।
In Venus's mahadasha, Venus's own antardasha: when Venus, strong, is in a kendra or trikona from the lagna, or in the 11th, a powerful yoga is declared.
There is gain of wealth through brahmins, gain of cows and buffaloes, contentment through celebrations for sons, and the possibility of well-being at home.
Travel toward the west brings gain of vehicles and garments — this when Venus, joined with and aspected by benefics, is in an upachaya house (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th) from the lagna.
In Venus's mahadasha, Sun's antardasha: there is distress, hostility from the king, quarrels with claimants to one's estate, and also disputes in dealings.
स्वोच्चे स्वक्षेत्रगे सूर्ये मित्रक्षे केन्द्रकोणगे। दायेशात्केन्द्रकोणे वा लाभे वा धनगेऽपि वा।।१२।।
But if the Sun is in its own exaltation, own sign, a friend's sign, a kendra, or a kona, or if it is in a kendra, kona, the 11th, or the 2nd from the dasha-lord —
— in its bhukti there is gain of wealth, and prosperity of kingdom, wife, and riches; great happiness through one's own master, and reunion with a beloved kinsman.
In Venus's mahadasha, Moon's antardasha: when the Moon is in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or in its own exaltation or own sign, joined with the lords of the 9th and 10th —
— or the Moon is full, joined with a benefic and the ruler of the kingdom, in its antardasha there is great happiness through abundance of vehicles and offspring.
भोजनाम्बरसौख्यं च बन्धुसंयुक्तं भोजनम्। नीचे वास्तंगते वापि षष्ठाष्टव्ययराशिगे।।२३।।
There is comfort through food and garments, and dining together with kinsmen. But if the Moon is debilitated, combust, or in the 6th, 8th, or 12th sign —
शुक्रस्यान्तर्गते भौमे लग्नात्केन्द्रत्रिकोणगे। स्वोच्चे वा स्वक्षेत्रे भौमे लाभे वा बलसंयुते।।२९।।
In Venus's mahadasha, Mars's antardasha: when Mars is in a kendra or trikona from the lagna, or in its own exaltation or own sign, or strong in the 11th —
शुक्रस्यान्तर्गते राहौ केन्द्रलाभत्रिकोणगे। स्वोच्चे वा शुभसंदृष्टे योगकारकसंयुते।।३५।।
In Venus's mahadasha, Rahu's antardasha: when Rahu, aspected by benefics, is in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or in its own exaltation, joined with a yogakaraka —
There is success in undertakings and wealth for the traveler, and the possibility of gain in livestock and land; if Rahu is in an upachaya house from the lagna, its bhukti proves happy.
शुक्रस्यान्तर्गते जीवे स्वोच्चे स्वक्षेत्रकेन्द्रगे। दायेशाच्छुभराशिस्थे भाग्ये वा कर्मराशिगे।।४४।।
In Venus's mahadasha, Jupiter's antardasha: when Jupiter is in its own exaltation, own sign, or a kendra, or from the dasha-lord in an auspicious sign, the 9th, or the 10th —
— it gives gain of wealth through a recovered kingdom, prosperity of one's desired aim and garments, honor from friends and one's master, and abundance of wealth and grain.
शुक्रस्यान्तर्गते मन्दे स्वोच्चे वा परमोच्चगे। स्वर्क्षकेन्द्रत्रिकोणस्थे तुङ्गांशे स्वांशगेऽपि वा।।५१।।
In Venus's mahadasha, Saturn's antardasha: when Saturn is in its own exaltation or supreme exaltation, its own sign, a kendra, or a trikona, or its exaltation-navamsha or own navamsha —
There is attainment of the merit of holy pilgrimage, and merit through charity and righteousness; special distinction through one's own master — but if the reverse (debilitation) applies, one experiences affliction.

शुक्रस्यान्तर्गते सौम्ये केन्द्रे लाभत्रिकोणगे। स्वोच्चे वा स्वक्षेत्रगे वापि राजप्रीतिकरं शुभम्।।५७।।
In Venus's mahadasha, Mercury's antardasha: when Mercury is in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or in its own exaltation or own sign, it auspiciously brings royal favor.
अन्यालयनिवासश्च मनोवैकल्यसम्भवः। व्यापारेषु तथा प्राज्ञं हानिरेव न संशयः।।६१।।
There is residence in another's dwelling, and the possibility of mental instability; loss even for the wise in matters of trade, without doubt.

In Venus's mahadasha, Ketu's antardasha — the ninth and final antardasha of Venus-mahadasha: when Ketu is in its own exaltation or own sign, or connected with a yogakaraka, endowed with positional strength —
— at the start of the bhukti there is abundant auspiciousness, daily enjoyment of sweet food, greater profit from one's occupation, and increase of cows and buffaloes.
