Jupiter in 4th house in Vedic astrology: home and happiness

Jupiter in the 4th house in Vedic astrology: why it lifts happiness, where its look lands, what your rising sign changes, and your 16 Jupiter years.

Jupiter in the 4th house: the house the text reads for your home, land, vehicles, kin and the mother's happiness. An illustration of the placement, not your chart.

Jupiter in the 4th house reads as good news for your happiness, in the house of your home, in Vedic astrology. A centuries-old Sanskrit text, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, judges happiness from Jupiter17.61, and Jupiter sitting in a corner of your chart is one of the ways it says that happiness grows17.63. How far it goes depends on your rising sign: Aries rising puts Jupiter at its exalted high point in Cancer3.38, and Libra rising puts it at its low point in Capricorn3.39.

Still, this Jupiter is one sentence in a longer story. The planets beside it, the sign your Moon landed in and whichever planet's years you're living now could each rewrite what it means. Your free personal reading follows that whole story and sends back a page on what it finds in you.

What a 4th-house Jupiter looks like at home

Picture the place where people end up staying later than they planned. There's food, someone's asleep on the couch, and a shelf of books that actually get read. That's one way this placement can look today. Jupiter is the planet of knowledge and happiness3.2, and in the old court of planets it's a minister, an adviser to the throne3.3. Here the adviser works from your kitchen table.

Your 4th house covers vehicles, kin, the mother's happiness, buried treasure, fields and the house itself17.4. So this Jupiter works on concrete things: the roof, the car, the land, who you count as family. "Buried treasure" can mean savings you forgot you had, or a family story that turns out to be worth keeping.

Take every line here as an old book's reading to reflect on, never a forecast. Signing a lease, taking a loan or moving a parent in gets decided with someone who knows your finances and with the family it touches.

Why this house turns up your happiness

You may know someone who has less than their friends and seems fine about it anyway. This placement speaks to that, and it comes down to two lines read together. In the passage on the 4th, the matter of fields is judged from the ruler of the house, and the matter of happiness from Jupiter17.61. Then the rule: when these significators stand in an angle or a trine, the things they stand for increase17.63. Your 4th is an angle, a corner of the chart like the 1st, 7th and 10th; the two trines are your 5th and 9th.

So the planet that carries happiness is standing in a corner, and in a house read for happiness too: another chapter pairs the 4th and the 10th as the special houses of happiness16.1.

That tie runs through happiness alone. When the text assigns one standing significator to each house, the 4th goes to the Moon, and Jupiter gets the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th12.37.

Where Jupiter looks from the 4th house

The usual shorthand for Jupiter's look from the 4th is your 8th, 10th and 12th. The grading in these verses is finer, and it changes what you'd expect from your career. Jupiter sees with a quarter at the 4th and 8th signs from itself, with half at the 7th, with three quarters at the 3rd and 10th, and in full at the 5th and 9th9.20. Most other planets save their full look for the 7th9.22. Count that out from your 4th:

How much Jupiter sees

Your house

What that house is read for

Full

8th and 12th

debts given and taken17.8; spending17.12

Three quarters

1st and 6th

your body and character17.1; enemies and wounds17.6

Half

10th

kingship, honor, your father, living abroad17.10

A quarter

7th and 11th

counted, but the lightest touch

The surprise is the 10th, which gets half. Your own rising sign, by contrast, gets three quarters. These verses grade how much Jupiter sees and leave the outcome for each house unspoken, so treat this table as a map of attention. Our guide to Vedic aspects has the same grades for every planet.

How far Jupiter's strength reaches in the 4th

Think of a talented person working from a side office: good at the job, a little away from the stage. Every planet has a strongest direction, and Jupiter's is the east, your rising sign3.24. Its directional strength is counted by distance from your 7th house42.13, which leaves it about halfway to its peak in the 4th. The planets at their directional best here are Venus and the Moon, the north's two3.24, which is why Venus in the 4th house gets a different write-up.

Being in a corner brings other things. In the passage on misfortune and what undoes it, any one of Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in a corner from your rising sign clears the whole of the affliction5.44. Jupiter gone to such a corner also has you "endowed with royal marks"17.28, which today can look like the quiet authority people grant you before you've said much.

Your mother, your schooling, your partner, your work

Start with your mother. Here's the plain answer: she is read from the 4th house counted from your Moon12.32, and the Moon is her significator17.62. Your 4th does hold "the mother's happiness" on its list17.4, so Jupiter sits among that, but a reading of who she is starts at your Moon. That sign may be a long way from your Jupiter.

On learning, the line is conditional and generous. Jupiter and Mercury are the lords of learning, and in an angle or trine, in their own house or exaltation, they swiftly bestow flawless learning17.35. That's Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces in your 4th. In the other nine signs, this verse has nothing to say about you either way.

For love, the verse judges "a fine wife" from Venus, along with vehicles, goods and ornaments17.62, so for a partner today, look to Venus as well as Jupiter's quarter look at your 7th. For work, the half look at your 10th above is what you've got here, and Jupiter in the 10th house is a different reading altogether.

How a Western 4th-house Jupiter differs from this one

If you've met this placement in a Western chart, it probably came as a big family, a big house, a warm childhood, a lot of feeling about roots. That picture isn't far off in spirit, which makes this one of the gentler translations between the two systems.

Vedic astrology casts your chart in a different zodiac, so check first that Jupiter really is in your 4th there. Our sidereal vs tropical guide explains how a placement can move.

Then the two part ways on method. A Western reading tends to describe a mood, and this one sets tests: which sign, who rules it, how Jupiter stands for your rising sign, and which planet's years you're in. Two people with this same placement can come away with quite different answers, and the table below shows why. More placements read this way are collected in the Vedic astrology guides.

Your rising sign decides this Jupiter: all twelve

Begin at your rising sign and count it as one. Three signs on is your 4th, and that's Jupiter's sign. Then two separate tests apply. The first is how much good a planet can hand out from that sign: all of it when exalted, three quarters in its root stretch (for Jupiter, the first 10° of Sagittarius), half in its own sign, a quarter in a friend's3.51. A neutral's sign gives an eighth, and an enemy's sign or debilitation gives none3.52. Jupiter counts Mercury and Venus as enemies, Saturn as neutral and the rest as friends3.46.

The second test is whether Jupiter is named kind or hard for your rising sign.

Aries rising is the row everyone hopes for, with Jupiter exalted and named kind. Libra rising is the row to read carefully, since it fails both tests. Several rows split the two: Virgo rising has the strong sign and the hard name, Cancer rising the reverse, and no verse here ranks one test over the other.

One more rule bears on Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces rising, where Jupiter rules corner houses. Kind planets that rule corners don't give kind results16.3, and this fault grows from the Moon to Mercury to Jupiter to Venus, in that order16.9.

Those rows take Jupiter's fixed friendships. Your chart can add temporary ones, made by the houses two planets hold from one another3.48, and a fixed enemy who is a temporary friend counts as neutral3.50. That can lift an enemy-sign row from nothing to an eighth.

With Virgo or Sagittarius rising, Jupiter also rules your 4th, and one line is yours. A 4th-house ruler resting there in its own sign brings more happiness and vehicles, along with conches, drums and other festive instruments17.64. Today that can look like a house that hosts the party. Sagittarius rising adds a curious case: a verse reads gain of a house when the 4th holds both its own ruler and the ruler of your rising sign17.60, and your Jupiter is both, though the verse doesn't say whether one planet can fill two seats.

When a 4th-house Jupiter reads hard

Some versions of this placement read rough, and the verses say so. The conditions come first: Jupiter debilitated, as it is with Libra rising, or combust, burned out by sitting too near the Sun37.113, or joined with malefics, the chart's hard planets. In the season Jupiter runs inside the Moon's years, that brings inauspicious action, the loss of a teacher, of sons and the like, loss of position, sorrow of mind and, certainly, sudden quarrels37.114. It goes on to the loss of house, land, vehicles and clothes37.115.

Inside Jupiter's own years, debilitation gets its own list for Jupiter's own season: great sorrow, conflict with kin over inheritance, quarrels and poor judgment37.317. Then a parting from sons and wife, and loss of wealth and grain37.318. The first of those verses also has a longevity line; we leave that out. The second adds bodily trouble through a flawed 7th-house ruler, which is a matter for a doctor if it's ever real for you.

Today that can look like a family fight over a will, or a stretch where you can't trust your own read on people. What these years can ask of you is slower decisions about property and family, and more outside advice. Each of these verses describes one season of a life.

Jupiter's own years carry a similar passage, naming debilitation, combustion, hard company and the 6th, 8th or 12th house together36.42, a list your 4th-house Jupiter can only partly meet. It reads loss of position, mental distress, affliction to children, great fear, and loss of cattle and wealth36.43. Its last line turns: hardship at the start, then happiness, honor and prosperity in the middle and at the end36.44.

If Jupiter rules your 4th, as with Virgo or Sagittarius rising, one more test applies. A house ruler that is combust or joined with the rulers of your 6th, 8th or 12th17.13, or that fails to look at its own house, or sits in a dead, aged, asleep or afflicted state, leaves the happiness of that house destroyed and its fruit doubtful17.14.

What about a hard planet sharing the house? There the verse runs the other way. A malefic in the 4th is offset when Jupiter holds an angle or trine, and the birth then favors both sides of the family, with health; the verse also speaks of longevity, and we leave that out5.51.

Your sixteen Jupiter years with Jupiter in the 4th

Jupiter's stretch of a life runs sixteen years35.15, and it comes fifth in the order of the nine planets35.14. Our page on Jupiter's years covers all sixteen.

The list of conditions for good Jupiter years is long: its exaltation or own sign, in an angle, the 11th or a trine, or its root sign or the 11th, or an exalted or own navamsa36.38. A navamsa is a finer slice of a sign, read in its own chart (the D9). The 4th is an angle, so your placement stands on that list, and Cancer, Sagittarius and Pisces add the sign as well. Those years read as gain of a kingdom, great happiness, royal honor and renown36.39, with happiness through wife and children and new vehicles and clothes36.40. For you, "kingdom" can mean being given real say over something of your own.

This placement also has its own short passage, written for the years a planet runs. Wherever Jupiter or Venus stands, that house's own results come through36.99. With a kind planet in the 4th, the years read celebration, festivity and prosperity36.100. Vehicles and villages follow, with plenty of cattle36.101. Then Jupiter gets its own line: a palanquin, "certainly a golden one," when the rulers of your rising sign, 10th and 9th all stand exalted36.103. A palanquin was a seat carried on the shoulders of others, the luxury car of its day. That's a rare chart. Without those three, the plainer lines on festivity and vehicles are the ones that stand.

With Virgo or Sagittarius rising, you also have the years of your 4th's ruler, which bring a dwelling36.78. And in Jupiter's own season inside those sixteen, if it's exalted or in its own sign as well as in this angle37.313, the reading includes a new dwelling, with a mansion and its surrounding wall37.314.

Each of the other planets' years holds a shorter Jupiter season too. These four speak most directly to your placement:

  • In Mars's years, with Jupiter in an angle, trine, the 11th or 2nd, or in an exalted or own navamsa37.169, its season reads good fame, and well-being and prosperity at home37.170.
  • In Rahu's years, an angle or trine from your rising sign is enough37.237 for position and a steadier mind37.238, with growth "like the moon in the bright fortnight"37.239.
  • In Ketu's years, an angle, trine or the 11th qualifies37.582, and the season adds well-being at home and pilgrimage37.584.
  • In Venus's years, a corner qualifies37.653, and the season reads a reunion with a beloved relative and comfort for your parents37.656.

Which Jupiter-in-the-4th do you have?

Four questions will separate your version from the rest.

  1. Which sign is Jupiter in? Exaltation in Cancer gives it the full share of good3.51, and Capricorn gives it none3.52.
  2. Is your Moon in a corner from Jupiter? Jupiter in an angle from the Moon is called Gajakesari20.1, read as radiant, wealthy, intelligent and in a ruler's favor20.2. With Jupiter in the 4th, that means a Moon in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th of your chart.
  3. Is the ruler of your 4th in a corner too? If it and Jupiter stand in angles from each other, and the ruler of your rising sign is strong, you get a combination called Kahala20.9. The verse is funny about it: vigorous, bold, yet foolish, commanding an army, lord of some village or other20.10.
  4. Where do the rulers of your 1st and 4th sit? Together in the 4th, the verse reads gain of a house; joined with your 6th, 8th or 12th instead, it reads the reverse, no house obtained17.60.

Each question moves the picture, and no single one finishes it. A debilitated Jupiter can still have a Moon in a corner, and a Cancer Jupiter can sit next to Rahu. All four, and everything else you were born with, go into your free personal reading, which comes back as one page about you.

Questions to sit with about home

  • Who comes to your home to feel better, and who do you go to?
  • What would "enough" look like for the place you live now?
  • Which piece of family knowledge do you want to keep, and which do you want to end with you?
  • When did you last feel happy for no reason you could explain, and where were you?

Jupiter in the 4th house: your questions

Is Jupiter in the 4th house good?

By the verses, it starts well: Jupiter carries happiness17.61, and an angle increases what a significator stands for17.63. After that it comes down to your row in the table above.

Does Jupiter in the 4th mean owning property?

There's no flat yes here. The verses give you conditions: the rulers of your 1st and 4th joined in the 4th for a house17.60, and Jupiter's own season for a new dwelling if the sign qualifies37.314. The planet sitting there doesn't settle it alone.

What about Jupiter debilitated in the 4th house, for Libra rising?

Capricorn gives it nothing to hand out3.52, and its seasons carry the hard readings above37.113. Its other test goes the same way: it is named hard for Libra rising16.26. Whatever else your chart holds could still move this reading.

Does Jupiter in the 4th form Hamsa yoga?

You'll see that name given to Jupiter in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces in a corner. We searched this book's Sanskrit and English for the name and its neighbors: it appears as a combination once, in a passing verse we leave out, and that verse doesn't define it53.19. We found no verse defining Hamsa as that placement. For that case, what you do have is a season read as lord of many kingdoms, prosperous and honored by the king37.313.

What does it say about transits, remedies or a retrograde Jupiter?

None of the verses this page draws on takes up a transit, a retrograde Jupiter or a remedy. Transits are a separate question, and we'd rather say so than guess.

Which planet is best in the 4th house?

By directional strength, the Moon and Venus3.24. By happiness, this page's answer is Jupiter17.61. Moon in the 4th house and Saturn in the 4th house show how differently the same house can read.
