Your Vedic Moon sign is the sign the Moon was standing in when you were born, measured against the fixed stars instead of the seasons. You find it from your birth date and place (your birth time makes it certain), and it often lands one sign earlier than the Moon sign a Western app gave you.
It is worth finding, because Vedic astrology reads your Moon before your Sun when the question is your inner life. Still, it is one line of your chart. The planets sharing its sign, the house it falls in and whose years you are living through can turn it in a different direction, which is why the free personal reading looks at your whole chart at once instead of one sign on its own.
What is a Moon sign in Vedic astrology?
Think about the last time a small thing took over your whole evening: a message left on read, a song that pulled up a year you thought you were done with. That inner weather, the part of you that takes the day in and keeps turning it over, is what the Moon stands for here. In the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, a centuries-old Sanskrit text, each planet is handed a part of a person, and the Moon is handed the mind3.1.
So your Moon sign is the setting your mind was born into. The book also seats the Moon beside the Sun as one of the two royals of the planets' court, with Mars as the commander and Mercury as the prince3.3. Your Sun sign keeps its seat in Vedic astrology. For questions of feeling and attention, though, a reader starts with the Moon's.
The Moon's own character is wise, sweet in speech and restless3.13. It is strong at night3.25, and of the seasons, the rains are the ones it owns3.34. If you have ever felt most like yourself late at night with rain on the window, the old picture fits.
Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from my Western one?
You probably found your Western Moon sign from an app that counts the zodiac from the March equinox. Vedic astrology counts from the stars themselves, and the two starting points have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so most planets, your Moon included, sit further back in a Vedic chart. Our page on sidereal vs tropical walks through that gap step by step, and the rest of our Vedic astrology guides start from there.
What that means for you: if your Western Moon sits in the first 24 degrees or so of its sign, your Vedic Moon is likely in the sign before. A Western Leo Moon at 10° becomes a Vedic Cancer Moon. If it sits late in its sign, it stays in the same sign but moves near its start: 28° becomes about 4°.
There is one more thing that makes the Moon touchy. It goes all the way around the sky in about 27.3 days, by NASA's count, so it spends only two and a bit days in each sign and moves around 13 degrees in a single day. A Moon that changed signs on your birthday can only be pinned down with your birth time.
How do you find your Vedic Moon sign?
You need three things: your date of birth, the place, and the time if you have it. A sidereal chart calculator, or the free reading form on this page, turns those into a Moon position. The sign it names is your Vedic Moon sign, also called your rashi.
Your Moon's position gives you a second answer for free. The sky is also cut into 27 smaller star segments, and the book's own arithmetic for finding yours is to take the Moon's position in minutes of arc and divide by 80035.17. That segment is your nakshatra, your birth star, and it decides which planet's years you were born into: the count runs from the star Krittika up to your own birth star35.12.
No birth time? Look up where the Moon was at the start and at the end of your birthday. Same sign both times, and your Moon sign is settled. Different signs, and you need the time, or at least whether you were born before or after the hour the Moon changed signs.
What each Vedic Moon sign means
You came here to find out what your Moon sign says about you, so start with the honest part. We searched every verse of the book for the Moon named together with each of the twelve signs, in English and in their Sanskrit names, and no passage gives a personality for the Moon in a sign (how we search and check every verse). What it does give is a description of every sign, read as the limbs of Time itself, starting with Aries2.1, and a description of the Moon. No single verse covers your exact Moon sign, so the reading below is built from those two parts.
Signs come in kinds named outright: movable, fixed and dual, cruel and gentle, male and female2.5. Many of the sign verses also give a guna, one of three old words for temperament. Sattva means clarity and steadiness, rajas means motion and an appetite to act, and tamas means weight and holding still.
Your Moon sign | Its ruler | What its verse gives the sign |
|---|---|---|
Aries | Mars | fiery, rajas, a sign that roams the mountains2.7 |
Taurus | Venus | earthy, white, domestic, strong by night2.8 |
Gemini | Mercury | airy, two-footed, drawn as a couple holding a mace and a vina, strong by night2.9 |
Cancer | the Moon | sattva, strong, very sharp and skilled2.11 |
Leo | the Sun | sattva, large-bodied, strong in the first half of the day2.12 |
Virgo | Mercury | strong by day, of medium build2.13; tamas, restless as the wind, a young woman in temper2.14 |
Libra | Venus | rajas, two-footed, strong by day2.15 |
Scorpio | Mars | small-bodied, many-legged, moving through water and earth, extremely sharp-limbed2.16 |
Sagittarius | Jupiter | sattva, a sign with the legs of a horse2.17 |
Capricorn | Saturn | tamas, earthy, strong by night2.19; half land animal, half water creature2.20 |
Aquarius | Saturn, named as the Sun's son2.22 | airy, tamas, a figure carrying a water pot2.21 |
Pisces | Jupiter2.24 | watery, sattva, self-possessed and gentle2.23 |
Now put the Moon, your mind, into that setting. What follows is a reading of the verses, offered for you to test against yourself.
If your Moon is in Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius or Pisces, it sits in a sattva sign. Today that can look like a mind that finds its way back to calm after a hard day, and thinks best once it has had some quiet. Cancer is also the Moon's own sign, so this Moon is at home.
If it is in Aries or Libra, it sits in a rajas sign. A mind like that tends to feel first and move fast: the reply sent before you've finished being upset, the plan made at 1 a.m. Aries's verse adds fire on top.
If it is in Virgo, Capricorn or Aquarius, it sits in a tamas sign. Read today, that can be a mind that holds on to a mood, or to a routine that works. The same weight is what lets you keep at something long after other people have dropped it.
Taurus, Gemini and Scorpio have no guna in their verses, so read them by their other words. Taurus is earthy and strong at night, as the Moon is, which suits a mind that likes the familiar. Gemini is airy and drawn as two people, a mind that wants company to think in. Scorpio is small, many-legged and sharp-limbed, and read today that can be a mind that notices a great deal.
Is your Moon strong in its sign?
If you have a Scorpio Moon, you may already have read something grim about it. The book does rank the Moon's signs, and the ranking is plain arithmetic. A planet's good strength is full in its exaltation, three quarters in its moolatrikona (a favored sign one step below exaltation), half in its own sign and a quarter in a friend's sign3.51.
For the Moon, the exaltation is only the first three degrees of Taurus, and the rest of Taurus is its moolatrikona3.40. Cancer is the sign it rules2.11. So a Taurus Moon in its first three degrees is the Moon at full strength, the rest of Taurus sits at three quarters, and a Cancer Moon at half.
Scorpio is the hard case. A planet's debilitation, its weakest sign, is the seventh sign from its exaltation, at the same degree3.39, which for the Moon is Scorpio. The result is stated without cushioning: in debilitation, as in an enemy's sign or when burnt up by the Sun, a planet's good strength is void, and its harmful strength runs the same ladder in reverse3.52.
Today that can read as a mind quick to pick up a threat and slow to set it down. It can ask a Scorpio Moon to notice when the sharpness is aimed inward. One verse speaks to this exact condition: even a debilitated planet, if it casts its look on your rising sign, is said to make a person a king22.26. Whether your Moon does that depends on your whole chart, and our guide to cancelled debilitation goes through the other rules for it. Every planet has a sign of fall like the Moon's Scorpio, and our page on exalted and debilitated planets lists all seven with their degrees.
Why your Moon works like a second rising sign
Say you want to know how home life or luck looks in your chart. A Vedic reader counts the houses from your rising sign first, then counts them again from your Moon: whatever is judged from your 4th, 1st, 2nd, 11th and 9th houses should also be judged from the Moon's 4th, 1st, 11th and 9th8.40. In plain words: home, self, gains and luck get read twice, once from each starting point. If you have read about your Vedic rising sign, your Moon sign is the second lens laid over it, and how to read your Vedic birth chart shows where both sit in the whole chart.
One pattern read from the Moon: if Jupiter sits in your Moon's own sign, or three, six or nine signs on from it, that is called Gajakesari20.1. The same verse names a second way in: the Moon seen by Venus, Jupiter and Mercury, none of the four debilitated or burnt up by the Sun. That one clause is why a Scorpio Moon can't make the second kind.
The Moon is also where the book looks for the mother: the fourth sign from the Moon is read for her, as the ninth from the Sun is read for the father12.32. These are readings for reflection, not a forecast about anyone in your family, and what happens between you and your mother belongs to the two of you.
Which Moon reading is yours?
Four checks will tell you which parts of this page are about you.
- Find your Moon's row in the table. Cancer is the Moon's own sign2.11, and the guna in your sign's verse is the temperament your mind was born into.
- Check its strength. A Moon in the first three degrees of Taurus is at full strength, and any other sign falls lower, set by whether that sign's ruler is a friend of the Moon3.51. In Scorpio its good strength is void3.52.
- Count from your Moon's sign to Jupiter. Jupiter in the same sign, or three, six or nine signs on, is the Gajakesari pattern20.1.
- Look up your birth star. Your Moon's star sets whose years you started in35.12, and the mahadasha guide shows how those years and their seasons run.
The Moon sign is the first answer, never the full one. Your free personal reading reads your whole chart together and writes a page about you from it.
Questions to sit with
- When something upsets you, does your mind find its way back to calm, act on it fast, or hold on to it? Which guna does that sound like?
- Is your Vedic Moon sign the same as your Western one? If not, which description sounds more like you at 1 a.m.?
- Where do you feel most like yourself: late at night, or somewhere quiet with the rain going?
- If your Moon is in Scorpio, where is your sharpness pointed this year: at a problem, or at yourself?
