A house lord in Vedic astrology is the ruler of whichever sign occupies one of your twelve houses. To find yours, start at your rising sign, count the signs around the chart, and look up who rules each one: those twelve rulers are your house lords, and where each one sits tells the story of the house it owns.
That makes every lord a thread you can pull, and no thread runs alone. The house a lord sits in, the planets beside it and the years you're living through all pull on it too, which is why the free personal reading takes your chart as one piece and turns it into a page written about you.
What is a house lord in Vedic astrology?
Think of each house in your chart as a room, and each sign as the wallpaper on that room. In Western astrology you may already know that Mars "rules" Aries. A house lord is that same idea put to work: if Aries is the wallpaper on your 7th house, Mars is the lord of your 7th, wherever in the chart Mars happens to be standing.
So a lord is a landlord who often lives somewhere else. Your 4th house might hold no planets at all, and its lord is still out there in your 11th or your 2nd, carrying the 4th house's business with it. You read the room, and then you go and find the landlord.
Seven planets hold all twelve signs between them. The Sun and Moon own one sign each, and the other five own two, so most planets in your chart are the lord of two of your houses at once. Rahu and Ketu, the North and South Nodes, aren't on the list of sign rulers; how they still get a say comes further down.
How do I find my house lords?
You need your sidereal chart, the one Vedic astrology uses, which often moves your planets back one sign from your Western chart (our page on sidereal and tropical zodiacs walks through why). You also need your birth time, because the rising sign changes every couple of hours.
Then it's three steps:
- Find your rising sign. That sign is your 1st house. (What the rising sign means on its own is in our Vedic rising sign guide.)
- Count forward through the zodiac. The next sign is your 2nd house, the one after that your 3rd, and so on around to the 12th. In most Vedic charts you'll be given, each house is one whole sign.
- Look up the ruler of each sign in the list below.
Sign | Its lord |
|---|---|
Aries | Mars2.7 |
Taurus | Venus2.8 |
Gemini | Mercury2.9 |
Cancer | Moon2.11 |
Leo | Sun2.12 |
Virgo | Mercury2.14 |
Libra | Venus2.15 |
Scorpio | Mars2.16 |
Sagittarius | Jupiter2.17 |
Capricorn | Saturn2.19 |
Aquarius | Saturn, named there as the Sun's son2.22 |
Pisces | Jupiter2.24 |
Here's how that plays out for a Gemini rising. Mercury rules your 1st, and through Virgo it rules your 4th as well. Cancer makes the Moon your 2nd lord, Leo makes the Sun your 3rd, and Libra gives Venus your 5th. Further round, Saturn owns both your 8th (Capricorn) and your 9th (Aquarius), and Jupiter owns your 7th (Sagittarius) and your 10th (Pisces). One planet, two of your rooms. The sign rulers page explains what owning a sign gives a planet, and why Uranus, Neptune and Pluto aren't on the list.
Does an empty house mean nothing happens there?
Plenty of people look at an empty 7th house and decide their love life has nothing going on. Read this way, an empty house is never empty, because its lord is still out there doing the work, and the lord's condition is the first thing you check.
The hard version comes first. A house's lord can be combust (lost in the Sun's glare, too near it to be seen), or sitting with the lords of the 6th, 8th or 12th houses17.13. It can fail to aspect its own house properly, be in a "dead", "aged" or "asleep" state (a planet's states are a separate measure of how awake and able it is, worth a page of their own), or be afflicted, and then the happiness born of that house should be declared destroyed, its fruit doubtful17.14. That's strong language, meant to be. Today it can look like a part of life where effort keeps leaking away until you see what's pulling on it.
Then the turn. When benefic planets aspect a house, and its own lord, a benefic, sits in it, young, awake and princely, the house flourishes17.15. Even the lord's look at its house from a distance makes that house's happiness grow, and this one rule is meant for all twelve houses alike17.16. So the question to ask of any room in your chart is simple: where is its owner, and can the owner see home from there?
Which house lords are kind and which are hard?
You might expect Jupiter and Venus to bring good news wherever they rule. It isn't that simple here: what a planet owns changes what it hands out.
Start with the four houses that hold your chart up, the kendras: your 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th8.33. A naturally kind planet that owns one of them doesn't give auspicious results, and a naturally harsh one that owns one doesn't give inauspicious ones, while the lords of the two konas, the 5th and 9th, give auspicious results16.3. For that Gemini rising, Jupiter owns two pillars, the 7th and the 10th, so by this verse its natural kindness doesn't carry over into what it gives as their owner.
The 5th and 9th, counted from your rising sign, are the konas, and the same verse calls the 6th, 8th and 12th the places of trouble8.35. Your 9th lord always gives benefic results, and if it happens to be a natural malefic, it still doesn't give purely malefic ones16.10. Your 5th lord is remembered as giving happy, auspicious results even when it's a malefic16.11. Those are the two lords to find first, because no other lord is read as kind every time.
On the other side, the lords of the 11th, 6th and 3rd are called malefic, the 8th lord doesn't give good results, and the 2nd and 12th lords give results according to the company they keep16.4. That can feel odd, because the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th are also called the houses of growth, "indeed excellent"8.36. Our reading of the two together: one verse praises the house itself, the other is about what its owner gives.
There's a ranking too. Among the pillars, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th grow stronger in that order, so your 10th is the strongest16.6. Of the two konas the 9th is stronger than the 5th16.7. And when one planet owns a kind house and a hard one, like Saturn with the 8th and 9th of a Gemini rising, these verses state both rules side by side and don't say which one wins.
What happens when Rahu or Ketu sits with a house lord?
If your North Node (Rahu) or South Node (Ketu) sits next to a lord you care about, it matters more than you'd guess. The nodes own no house in the table above, so they take their say from wherever they land: in whatever house Rahu and Ketu are placed, and with whichever house lords they're joined, they give the full result of those houses16.12.
So the nodes work like a stand-in. If Rahu sits with your 9th lord, Rahu carries the 9th house's results too. And unless you're in Rahu or Ketu years, the planet whose years you're living through is also the lord of one or two of your houses, so the mahadasha and antardasha guide is the natural next read once you know your lords.
What does each house lord mean in each house?
Maybe you already know where your 9th lord is and want the line for it. Chapter 18 goes through each of the twelve lords in each of the twelve houses, then closes by saying it has stated the result of every house lord in every house18.94. That's 144 readings. Here are two lords followed all the way through, so you can see how it works. For the 10th lord in every house, our 10th house guide gives all twelve rows; for the other lords, the full lines are in chapter 18 of the text, which you can read in the public-domain Bombay 1899 printing.
The 9th lord, the most trusted
In your 1st or 7th, you're read as virtuous and renowned, though whatever task you set out to finish is never fully achieved18.66. In your 2nd or 3rd, you're always mindful of your fortune, wealthy, virtuous, amorous, learned and loved by people18.67. These rows are the book's reading for you to reflect on, not a forecast of your bank balance or your family, and any real choice about either is yours to make with the people who share it. In your 4th or 10th, the reading is a minister or the head of an army: meritorious, well spoken of, eloquent, bold, without wrath18.68. Today that can look like being the person a team turns to when a call has to be made. In your 5th or 11th, you're fortunate, loved, devoted to your teacher, self-respecting, resolute and steady in your virtues18.69.
Now the hard row. When the 9th lord falls in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the reading is a person devoid of fortune, with no happiness from a maternal uncle or from an elder brother18.70. It's the rule from earlier showing up in a single line: even the kindest lord loses ground in the places of trouble. What this placement can ask of you is to build luck slowly, through your own work.
The 4th lord, the lord of home
In your 1st, father and child are fond of each other, there's enmity with the father's side of the family, and you become famous under your father's name18.26. In your 5th or 9th, you're happy, loved by everyone, devoted to Vishnu, self-respecting and wealthy through your own effort18.30. In your 10th, the king honors you, you know chemistry (alchemy, in the old word), delighted, and unusually happy18.34. A modern version of "honored by the king" is a boss or a field that backs you.
The 4th lord has its hard rows too. In your 6th, the reading is someone always traveling, wrathful, a thief, given to sorcery, evil-minded and yet spirited18.31. In your 7th, you're very learned but give up the wealth your father earned, and go as if mute in an assembly18.32. Read today, the 6th-house row can be a home life that never settles, and the 7th-house row a bright mind that freezes when the room is watching.
Two surprises from the hard houses
Some lords of hard houses read well in certain places. The 6th lord in your 10th or 2nd is read as bold, renowned in your family line, happy in a foreign land, eloquent and wholly given to your own work18.44. The 12th lord in your 2nd or 8th is read as devoted to Vishnu, righteous, pleasant-spoken and possessed of every virtue18.87. Chapter 18 doesn't turn these into a blanket rule; each pair gets its own line.
How strong is your house lord?
Two people can share the same lord in the same house and live it very differently, and the reason is a dial. Each result is to be judged by the lord's strength or weakness18.92. A lord at full strength gives the full result, middling strength gives half, and a weak one a quarter18.93.
What sets the dial? One measure is the sign the lord sits in. A planet in its sign of exaltation has full strength, in its moolatrikona (its favored stretch of its own sign) full less a quarter, in its own sign half, and in a friend's sign a quarter3.51. In a neutral's sign it's an eighth, and it's void when fallen, when combust or in an enemy's sign, with harsh strength counted in the reverse order3.52. Our page on planet friends and enemies lists who counts as a friend to whom.
So if your 9th lord sits in its own sign in your 10th, you get about half of that "minister or commander" row. If it's in an enemy's sign there, the dial reads void. Same row, very different week.
What happens when two house lords meet?
You may have a planet that owns your 5th sitting right beside the one that owns your 9th, and if so, you've found a pairing the text treats as royal. The 9th lord is treated as the king and the 5th lord as the minister, and if the two aspect each other, the person comes to possess a kingdom21.2. If they're joined in any house, or stand in the 7th from each other, a child of a royal line certainly becomes a king21.3.
Two more pairings join the pillars to the konas. If your 4th lord sits in your 10th and your 10th lord in your 4th, swapping places, and the 5th and 9th lords aspect them, the reading is a kingdom21.4. If your 4th and 10th lords are joined with the 5th lord, or with the 9th lord, the reading is the same21.6.
Nobody reading this is about to be crowned. What "a kingdom" can mean in a life now is a domain that's yours: a craft, a team, a home you built, a name people trust. These lines tie it to your home and work lords meeting the two lords read as kind every time.
How are Vedic house lords different from Western rulers?
If you learned astrology from Western sites, the rulers shift first. Scorpio belongs to Mars and Aquarius to Saturn, and the outer planets rule nothing. The zodiac shifts too: it's sidereal, so your rising sign itself may move back one, and every lord moves with it.
The bigger change is where the weight sits. Many Western readings start from the planets inside a house. A Vedic reading keeps asking who owns the house and where that owner went. A planet's nature and its job are two separate things here: your Venus can be gentle by nature and still be the lord of a hard house, and both get read. That's why two people with Venus in the same sign can get very different readings.
Which of your house lords should you check first?
Your chart has twelve lords, which is a lot to hold at once. These four checks take you to the ones the verses lean on hardest:
- Find your 9th lord, the ruler of your 9th sign, and the house it sits in. It's the lord that always gives benefic results16.10, so its house is where your luck is pointed.
- Find your 5th lord, the other kona lord, giving happy results even as a malefic16.11. Note whether it touches your 9th lord, the king-and-minister pair.
- Note each lord's sign. Exalted, own sign, friend, enemy or fallen: that's the dial between the full result and a quarter18.93.
- Look at your rising sign's own lord. Is it combust, or sitting with your 6th, 8th or 12th lord? That's the first condition of the hard verse17.13.
These four still don't make a whole reading on their own. The lord of your 10th might be doing beautifully while your Moon tells another story, and the years you're living through decide which house speaks first. The free personal reading sets all of it side by side, from your own birth details, and gives you a page about yourself. The Vedic basics hub gathers the rest of the guides.
Questions to sit with
- Which house in your chart do you think of as empty, and where is its lord living?
- Your 9th lord is the one that always gives good. Does the house it sits in feel like where your luck has actually come from?
- If a kind planet owns one of your pillars, where have you seen its kindness spent on holding that house up?
- Which two of your rooms does your busiest planet own, and do those parts of your life move together?
House lord questions, answered
Who are the lords of each house in Vedic astrology?
They depend on your rising sign. Each sign has one ruler, from Mars for Aries to Jupiter for Pisces, and your house lords are the rulers of the signs on your twelve houses, counted from the rising sign.
How do I find my 7th house lord?
Count your rising sign as the first sign, then keep going until you reach the seventh. The ruler of that seventh sign is your 7th lord. The 7th is a pillar house, so a naturally kind planet ruling it doesn't give auspicious results as its owner16.3.
Which house lord is the most powerful?
What if a house has no planets in it?
Then you read it through its lord. A lord that looks at its own house makes that house's happiness grow, for any of the twelve17.16. For how we read these verses at all, see how AstroEngine reads the BPHS, or start from the top with how to read your Vedic birth chart.
