Moon in 11th house in Vedic astrology: gains and good years

If your Moon is in the 11th house, Vedic astrology puts it in the house of gains, and a centuries-old Sanskrit text, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, names the 11th as one of the houses where a strong Moon gives good years^36.13. So the Moon in the 11th house is a kind placement, and what decides how kind is the Moon itself: its sign, whether it was growing or shrinking when you were born, and who sits with it.

What does a Moon in the 11th look like in your week?

Think about when you feel most like yourself. For a lot of people with this Moon, it's the moment something comes in: the paycheck that finally covers rent, or the plan that lands after months of work. The 11th is where things arrive.

The Vedic name says it outright. The 11th is called aya, income, and labha, gain, among its other names^50.5. In the chapter on the twelve houses, it's the house read for acquiring all kinds of goods, for children and a spouse, and for gain and growth of livestock^17.11. Is the Moon in the 11th house good?

Yes, with a condition attached. There is a short list for a Moon at its best: exalted or in its own sign, placed in an angle, the 11th or a trine, joined by a kind planet, waxing and strong^36.13. The 11th is named on that list by number. A Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th can never tick that box. Yours already does. (An angle is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, and a trine the 5th or 9th. What does the Moon at its best bring? When its years are excellent, they bring the mother's welfare, ponds, fields, gardens and houses, a seat of standing, wealth, fame and the comfort of being carried in a palanquin^36.12. How is the Vedic 11th different from the Western one?

If you know Western astrology, you probably think of the 11th as the house of friends, groups and hopes for the future. A Moon there is read as someone who feels safe in a crowd and needs a circle.

The Vedic 11th leans another way. Its own verse in the house chapter speaks of acquisition and gain, and doesn't mention friends or wishes^17.11. Friends do turn up, but in the Moon's seasons. When Rahu's years are running and the Moon is joined by kind planets, in its own sign, exalted, in an angle, a trine, the 11th or a friend's sign^37.298, its season brings honor, wealth for its own sake, ornaments, health, and prosperity through friends, a partner and children^37.299. What does an 11th-house Moon say about your mother?

People often ask what this Moon says about their mother. In this text the Sun signifies the father and the Moon the mother^5.42, so any reading of the Moon touches her too.

The best version is the one already quoted: the Moon's excellent years put the mother's welfare first on the list^36.12. The hard version is in the verses on a weak Moon. If the Moon is weak and joined by malefic planets, the text reads heaviness of body, an afflicted mind, trouble from servants, loss of wealth, and harm from the mother's side of the family^36.20. Today, "servants" can mean the people you rely on for work done well, and "the mother's side" her relatives as much as her.

That verse belongs to its conditions: a weak Moon, with harsh company. An 11th-house Moon that is waxing and well placed by sign isn't the Moon it describes.

A waxing or waning Moon in the 11th

Were you born under a growing Moon or a shrinking one? The text builds this into strength: kind planets are strong in the bright half of the month, and malefics in the dark half^3.26. A debilitated or waning Moon, in the Moon's own years, brings loss of wealth^36.19.

So two people with the Moon in the 11th can have quite different placements. One was born a few days before a full Moon, and their Moon meets the list in full. The other was born near a new Moon, and their 11th-house Moon is in the right house without the strength to fill it.

Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio and Gemini: the signs that change it

Your Moon's sign in the 11th depends on your rising sign: count back two signs from it. A Cancer rising has its 11th in Taurus, a Virgo rising in Cancer, and so on round the circle.

Taurus Moon, Cancer rising

Taurus is the Moon's exaltation sign^3.38. The Moon is exalted in its first three degrees, and the rest of Taurus is its moolatrikona^3.40. Exalted, a planet's good strength is full; in its moolatrikona, full less a quarter; in its own sign, half; in a friend's sign, a quarter^3.51. A Taurus Moon in the 11th is the strongest version there is.

Cancer Moon, Virgo rising

Cancer is the Moon's own sign^2.11, so the Moon is at home, at half strength on that scale.

Scorpio Moon, Capricorn rising

The Moon's debilitation is the seventh sign from its exaltation^3.39, which is Scorpio. In a neutral's sign a planet's strength is an eighth, and in debilitation it is void^3.52. This is the 11th-house Moon in the right house with the least behind it.

Gemini Moon, Leo rising

With Leo rising, the Moon rules your 12th house. The Moon as lord of the 12th, placed in the 9th, 11th or 5th, enjoys divine houses, couches and fragrances alone^17.237. Today, that can look like a room of your own you've made beautiful, and real pleasure in having it to yourself.

The Moon with Mars in the 11th

If Mars shares your 11th house with the Moon, look at your 5th house next. When the Moon and Mars sit together in the 11th and the 5th house is one of Mercury's signs with Mercury in it, the person becomes lord of abundant wealth^24.2. The same holds when the 5th is one of Jupiter's signs with Jupiter in it^24.6.

Both verses need all three pieces: the Moon, Mars, and the 5th house's own ruler at home in the 5th. Mars beside your Moon is only the first of them. For Mars on its own in this house, read Mars in the 11th house.

Your life runs through a calendar of planetary years, and the dasha calendar explains how they are counted. Inside each planet's years there are shorter seasons, and the text reads the Moon's season in each of them. The 11th is named again and again.

When the Moon is exalted or in its own sign, or in a trine or the 11th, and joined by the rulers of the 9th and 10th, its own season brings cattle, horses and fine clothes^37.90, devotion to your teachers, a growing name and great happiness^37.91. A full Moon at full strength gives the great happiness of holding a commander's post, the verse says, before it turns to a Moon with malefics, debilitated, or in the 12th or 6th^37.92. 3. What sits with it: A kind planet beside it is part of the Moon at its best^36.13; a weak Moon with malefics is the hard verse above^36.20.
4. The years you're in: In Saturn's years the Moon needs Jupiter's aspect before the season turns good^37.430.
