In Vedic astrology, the 10th house is the part of your chart read for your work, your standing in the world, your father, time spent living away from home, and debt. It is the tenth sign counted from your rising sign, and the planet that rules that sign says as much about your working life as anything sitting inside the house.
Your 10th house is one corner of your chart, and what shares it, where your Moon sits and whose years you're living through can tilt it a long way. The free personal reading puts all of that together and writes it up as a page about you.
What does the 10th house mean in Vedic astrology?
Picture the version of you that strangers meet first at work: your title, the thing you're known for, the reason someone would recommend you. That public, working self is the ground the 10th house covers in both Western and Vedic astrology.
The Vedic list is wider than "career," though. From the house of the sky, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra reads kingship, a livelihood connected with the sky (which the verse doesn't explain), honor, the father, living abroad, and debt17.10. Kingship today can mean authority of any size, from running a team to running a business of your own. Honor is your name in your field. And the father sits here beside your work, which is why a parent's expectations about what you should do with your life so often turn up in a 10th-house conversation.
The Sanskrit names say the same thing from different angles. The text calls this house vyapara (business), aspada (one's position), mana (respect), ajna (command), karma (action) and kha (sky)50.5. Karma here means what you do, your deeds and your work, which is why the 10th is often called the karma bhava, the house of action.
How do you find your 10th house?
Start with your rising sign, the sign coming up on the eastern horizon when you were born. In a Vedic chart that sign is your whole 1st house. The next sign along is your 2nd house, and so on, so your 10th house is simply the tenth sign counting from your rising sign, with the rising sign as one.
An example: if your rising sign is Aries, count Aries (1), Taurus (2), Gemini (3) and onward until you reach Capricorn (10). Capricorn is your 10th house. If your rising sign is Leo, your 10th is Taurus.
Two things trip people up here. First, you need your birth time, because your rising sign changes roughly every two hours. Second, the chart has to be cast in the sidereal zodiac, which is set against the stars. Over centuries the two zodiacs have drifted about 24 degrees apart because Earth's axis slowly wobbles, which Britannica explains under precession of the equinoxes. So your Vedic rising sign, and with it your 10th house, often lands one sign earlier than in a Western chart. Our guide to the Vedic rising sign covers finding it step by step.
Once you know the sign, look up the planet that rules it. Our page on which planet rules your sign lists all twelve. That planet is your 10th-house ruler, and most of what follows hangs on it.
Why the 10th is one of the four pillars of your chart
Think of the parts of a life you'd rebuild first if everything fell over: yourself, your home, your partner, your work. A Vedic chart treats those four the same way. The lagna, the 4th, the 7th and the 10th carry the special name kendra8.33. Your rising sign is you, the 4th is home, the 7th is your partner, and the 10th is where you meet the world.
The 10th also belongs to a second group, the upachaya houses: counted from your own place, the 3rd, 6th, 11th and 10th, which the verse calls "indeed excellent"8.36. Upachaya means increase or growth. So the house of your work sits in two groups at once, a pillar and a place of growth.
When the text assigns each house a planet that stands for its matters, the one it names for the 10th is Mercury, "the Moon's son"12.37.
The 10th is also where planets in good shape help each other most. Planets in their own sign, their exaltation sign or a friend's sign, standing in one of the four pillar houses, work for one another, "especially so if in the karma house"12.22.
Which planets are strong in the 10th house?
If your Sun or Mars sits in your 10th house, you may know the pull toward being seen at work. The Sun and Mars take their directional strength in the south3.24. That strength is measured by their distance from the 4th house, so it peaks in the 10th, the house straight across from it42.13. Today that can look like a working life lived in plain view.
Every other planet in your 10th is read with its sign and its company. Jupiter is a good example of how detailed that gets; our page on Jupiter in the 10th house goes through it sign by sign, and the Moon in the 10th house shows why the 10th is the Moon's weakest direction. For the slow planet, Saturn in the 10th house sets out the one verse on losing your work and the conditions it needs.
What if your 10th house is empty?
An empty 10th house is common, and it doesn't mean an empty working life. Every chart has at least three empty houses, because nine planets can't fill twelve signs.
When nothing sits in a house, you read its ruler. One rule holds for every house: when the ruler looks back at its own house, the happiness of that house increases17.16. So the first question for an empty 10th is where its ruler sits and whether it can see home. The same count finds the ruler of every other house too, and the house lords guide walks through all twelve.
The same rule runs in reverse, and it's stated plainly. If the ruler of a house is combust (so close to the Sun it can't be seen), or sits with the rulers of the 6th, 8th or 12th17.13. The next verse adds a ruler that doesn't look at its own house, or is in a dead, aged or sleeping state, or afflicted, and for all of these, "the happiness born of that house should be declared destroyed, its fruit doubtful"17.14. For the 10th, the verse on work says it directly: if the 10th ruler is without strength, a flaw in one's vocation should be declared17.211.
Our reading of that for today: a 10th ruler in this condition can show as work that never quite feels like yours, or a title that doesn't match what you can do.
Where your 10th-house ruler sits, house by house
This is the part to look up in your own chart. Find the ruler of your 10th, see which house it's in, and read its line. The verses describe a person in the old language of character and duty; the reading after each is ours.
Some of these lines touch on health and money. Take them as material to think about your work with; a decision about your job, your finances or your body still deserves advice from someone who knows your situation.
If your 10th ruler sits in your 1st house, the verse gives the gift of poetry, a sickly childhood with happiness after it, and wealth that grows day by day18.71. Your work and your self are hard to separate: what you make tends to carry your name and voice.
In your 2nd, 3rd or 7th house, it reads as spirited, virtuous, eloquent, and holding to truth and dharma18.72. Today that often reads as someone whose work runs on words: pitching, writing, negotiating, teaching.
In your 4th or 10th house: knowledgeable, brave and happy with it, devoted to teachers and the gods, righteous and truthful18.73. Respect for the people who trained you is part of how you work.
In your 5th or 11th house: wealthy, blessed with children, always cheerful, truthful and happy18.74. This often looks like work that pays and that you enjoy, the kind of job you'd describe to a friend without sighing.
In your 6th or 12th house the verse is hard: troubled by enemies, and though clever, never happy18.75. Today that can look like rivals at work, office politics, or a job where you're good at what you do and still restless. This placement can ask you to choose your battles, and to ask what "happy at work" would mean for you rather than for the people around you.
In your 8th house comes the hardest line in the set: cruel, a thief or a rogue, a speaker of untruths, and a cause of anguish to the mother18.76. The verse also speaks of lifespan here; we leave that out. Read today, it warns about the shortcut: work that bends the truth, or a career your family worries over. It's the text's reading of one condition, and like every line in this set it's weighed by how strong the ruler is18.92.
In your 9th house, it reads as the protector of the family line, with good relatives and friends, devoted to the mother and to worship18.77. Your work may end up carrying something your family started, or giving it a new form.
When other rulers land in your 10th house
Sometimes a guest in the house shapes your work as much as its ruler does. The text gives a line for every house ruler that sits in your 10th; here are the five that speak most to work and standing.
- Your rising sign's ruler in the 10th gives the happiness of father and mother, many siblings, amorous, with virtue and good looks18.4. People tend to meet the real you at work.
- The 4th ruler there reads as honored by the king, versed in alchemy or chemistry, greatly delighted, with an unusual share of happiness18.34. A boss, a school or an institution that backs you is the modern face of the king's honor.
- The 6th ruler there: bold, known in your family line, happy in a foreign land, eloquent, and wholly devoted to your own work18.44. This is one reading where living abroad shows up as a good thing.
- The 9th ruler there: a minister or an army commander, well regarded, eloquent, bold and free of anger18.68. Today a minister can be a trusted second-in-command, the person the founder calls first.
- The 11th ruler there: honored by the king, a holder of wealth, clever, truthful and devoted to your own path18.83.
Combinations read as a strong working life
Some working lives seem to come together early: the mentor who opens a door, a name in your field before you expected one. The combinations below join the 10th ruler to other planets. Two terms first. A planet's exaltation sign is the one sign where it gets full strength3.51. And besides the four pillar houses, the 5th and 9th are named kona, the trine houses8.35.
- The 10th ruler in its exaltation sign, in a pillar house or the 5th or 9th, joined with or seen by Jupiter: an excellent vocation17.221.
- The 10th ruler in its exaltation sign with Jupiter, and the 9th ruler in the 10th: vehicles, dominion and majesty17.215.
- The 11th ruler in the 10th and the 10th ruler in the 1st, or both in pillar houses: a happy life17.216.
- The 11th ruler in the 10th, the 10th ruler strong, and Jupiter looking at it: a good name17.224.
- The 10th ruler in the 9th, your rising sign's ruler in the 10th, and the Moon in the 5th: wide fame17.225.
And one hard pairing: the 10th ruler with Rahu, the North Node, in the 8th house reads as hateful of people, a great fool, and ill-famed17.213. Like the 8th-house line above, it describes one exact condition, and it asks the person who has it to watch how they treat the people around them at work.
How the Vedic 10th differs from your Western Midheaven
You may already know your Midheaven from a Western chart app. In Western astrology the 10th house usually begins at that point, the highest degree of the zodiac at your birth, and it's tied to Capricorn and Saturn. Three things change in the Vedic version.
The house is a whole sign, counted from your rising sign, so your Midheaven point may sit in your 9th or 11th instead. The planet that stands for the house is Mercury, as above, and the planet that rules your particular 10th sign matters more than any natural ruler. And the house reaches past career to your father, living abroad and debt.
The Vedic view also sends you to a separate chart for the finer detail. The tenth division of your chart, the D10, is read for great deeds8.3, and our guide to the D10 chart shows how it's built and read.
Which 10th house reading is yours?
Four checks you can make on your own chart:
- Find the house your 10th ruler sits in, using the list above. A ruler looking back at the 10th lifts the house; one combust or tied to the 6th, 8th or 12th rulers pulls it down.
- Look for your Sun or Mars in the 10th. Either one is at its directional peak there, which tends to put your work in plain sight.
- Count ten from your Moon as well. The text reads every house both from the Moon's sign and from the rising sign54.42. If your 10th from the Moon looks different from your 10th from the rising sign, both are part of the story.
- Count ten from your Sun. Whatever is judged in the 10th is also judged from the 10th counted from the Sun8.39, so your Vedic Sun sign gets a job here too.
No single one of these settles anything. Your 10th house sits inside a whole chart, with a Moon, a rising sign and a run of years that pull on it, and the free personal reading reads those together and writes you a page about them.
Questions to sit with
- If you could be known for one thing at work, what would it be, and who would you want to know it?
- How much of the work you've chosen is yours, and how much is your father's or your family's picture of you?
- Where do you already have a little authority, and how do you use it?
- If you've lived away from home, or want to, what does it give your work that staying wouldn't?
10th house questions, answered
What does the 10th house represent in Vedic astrology?
Your work and standing, and also your father, living abroad and debt17.10.
How do I know my 10th house?
Count ten signs from your sidereal rising sign, counting the rising sign as one. You need your birth time.
Who is the 10th house lord?
It's the planet that rules the sign on your 10th house. For a Leo rising, the 10th is Taurus, so the lord is Venus.
Which planet is powerful in the 10th house?
The Sun and Mars, which reach their directional peak there42.13.

Does the 10th house rule the knees?
Is the 10th house the same as the Midheaven?
Not quite. In a Vedic chart the 10th is the whole tenth sign from your rising sign, and the Midheaven point can fall in the house before or after it.
