Moon in 10th house in Vedic astrology: work and standing
Moon in the 10th house, from a centuries-old Sanskrit text: all 12 rising signs, your ten Moon years, and why the 10th is the Moon's weakest direction.

The Moon in the 10th house of the birth chart, counted from the rising sign: the house of your work and standing. An illustration of the placement, not your chart.
With the Moon in the 10th house, Vedic astrology puts your mind in the house of your work and your standing. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, a centuries-old Sanskrit text, lists the kendras, the four quarter houses that include your 10th, among the places where a Moon that is exalted or at home, joined by a kind planet, waxing and strong, gives good years36.13. There is one catch: by the text's own formula, the 10th is where the Moon's directional strength is lowest.
Your 10th-house Moon is also only one part of a larger picture. Its sign, the planets near it and the years you're living in can push the reading in very different directions. The free personal reading weighs all of your chart at once and hands it back as one page about you.
What a 10th-house Moon looks like at work
Your mind and your work share a house, so your feelings leak into your work, for better and worse. On a good day the whole team feels it; on a flat one, a smile doesn't quite cover it.
That's our reading of a Moon placed here. Among the planets' roles, the Moon is your mind3.1, and it is one of the two royal planets, with the Sun3.3. Its portrait is wise, round-bodied, pleasant to look at, sweet-spoken and restless3.13. Put that restless, well-liked mind in the house the whole world sees, and work becomes the place where how you feel goes public.
The Moon also stands for your mother5.42. Whether her hopes for you shaped the work you chose is a question only you can answer, and the verses here don't answer it for you.
Treat all of this as a mirror to think with, not a forecast or advice. Where your money, your health or your family comes into it, you make the choice, ideally with a qualified person or the people it involves.
What your 10th house holds
Your 10th is the part of your chart that covers your place in the world: rule and authority, a livelihood connected with the sky, honor, the father, debt, and residence in a foreign land17.10. Read for today, that's the title on your badge, how much say you have, a job that takes you overseas, and what you owe. Its other names include business, position, honor, command and karma, which here means work50.5.
Two more facts frame your Moon here. The 10th is one of the four growth houses (upachaya), with the 3rd, 6th and 11th, and the text calls them excellent8.36. And the planet that naturally stands for the 10th is Mercury, while the Moon's own house in the same list is the 4th, straight across from your 10th12.37.
The catch: the 10th is the Moon's weakest direction
Each planet is given a compass point of its own, and the Moon shares the north with Venus3.24. In a birth chart the text turns that into a sum: to score the Moon's directional strength, you measure how far it sits from the 10th, the midheaven42.13.
The arithmetic does the rest. By that formula, the farther your Moon is from the midheaven, the higher its score, up to its most at the opposite point, the bottom of the chart and your 4th house. A Moon near the top of your 10th scores close to nothing.
None of the verses on this page ranks directional strength above a planet's sign or its company. So a 10th-house Moon in a strong sign can still read well; it just doesn't get this particular boost. If yours sits near the very top of the chart, read the rest of this page with that in mind.
The Moon in the 10th: Western vs Vedic
In Western astrology, a 10th-house Moon is usually read as a public, emotional career: someone known for how they make people feel, often shaped by their mother's ambitions. That picture isn't far from the Vedic one. The difference is where the weight falls: here the 10th is first the house of karma, the work you do and the standing it earns.
The bigger change is the zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which sits roughly 24 degrees behind the tropical one, so your Moon frequently falls a sign back from the one your Western app shows. Your rising sign can move too, and with it the house. Check your Vedic Moon sign and your Vedic rising sign before you trust any house reading, this one included.
Your Moon's sign in the 10th, for each rising sign
The 10th house is the tenth sign from your rising sign, so your rising sign fixes your Moon's sign here. The text marks three signs for the Moon outright. It is exalted (at its strongest) in Taurus3.38, and debilitated (at its weakest) in the seventh sign from there, Scorpio3.39. Only the first three degrees of Taurus are exaltation; the rest of Taurus is its moolatrikona, its next-best ground3.40. Cancer is its own sign2.11.
Chapter 16 adds a second test. For each rising sign it lists which planets act kindly (benefic) and which act hard (malefic) for someone born with it. Here is the Moon's row in each:
"Not named" means that rising sign's verse lists other planets and leaves the Moon out.
By sign, Leo rising gives the strongest Moon in this house, exalted or close to it. Libra rising puts it at home, and chapter 16 pairs it with Mercury for a royal combination (raja yoga)16.26. Aquarius rising is the hardest row: a debilitated Moon that the same chapter also lists as hard.
Two rules that can lift a 10th-house Moon
If your reputation matters to you, one rule starts from exactly this placement. With the Moon in the 10th, the planet ruling the Moon's sign in a trine from it (the 1st, 5th or 9th sign counted from the Moon), and the ruler of your rising sign in a kendra, you become someone of good renown17.223. Kendras are the houses at the chart's quarter points: your rising sign itself, and the 4th, 7th and 10th from it.
The second rule is about company. When planets in their own sign, exaltation or a friend's sign sit in kendras, they become helpers (yogakarakas) to one another, and the text adds that this holds especially in the 10th12.22. A Moon at home in Cancer or exalted in Taurus in your 10th, with another planet just as strong in a kendra, is the version this verse describes.
Both rules need more than the Moon itself, so look at the rest of your chart before you count on either.
Your ten Moon years
Every life runs through each planet's years in a fixed order, and the Moon's come right after the Sun's35.14. They last ten years35.15. Which one you're in now depends on your Moon at birth; mahadasha and antardasha explains how to find it.
A good Moon's years bring the mother's welfare, land, gardens and houses, a seat of status, money, fame and comfort36.12. The list of what makes them good is the one in the opening: exalted or in its own sign, in a kendra, the 11th or a trine, with a kind planet, waxing and strong36.13.
Then the text gets specific. Good work at home, a new vehicle, a meeting with the person in charge, the money goal you set actually reached36.15. Luck through friends and the people above you, kingly status, real happiness, fine clothes36.16. In a modern office, picture a promotion that comes through a mentor.
What the Moon's seasons need, year by year
Inside each planet's years, every planet takes a shorter turn, called a season. The Moon's season in each of them has its own condition, and almost all of them name the kendras, which include your 10th. In the table, houses are counted from your rising sign; a trine there means your 1st, 5th or 9th.
Whose years you're in
What the Moon's season needs
What it brings
the Sun's
the Moon in a kendra or trine from your rising sign37.21
a wedding, good undertakings, plenty37.21; then house, land and vehicles, and with the Moon exalted or at home, a happy partnership and money37.22
Mars's
the Moon exalted, at home or in a kendra, joined with the rulers of the 9th, 4th, 10th or rising sign37.223
a wide domain, fine things, building, merit earned37.224
Rahu's
the Moon with kind planets, at home, exalted, in a kendra, a trine, the 11th or a friend's sign37.298
being honored by people in power, money, and prosperity through friends, partner and children37.299
Jupiter's
the Moon strong and full, in a kendra, the 11th or a trine, or exalted or at home37.369
public honor and happiness through partner and children37.370
Saturn's
the Moon seen by Jupiter, exalted or at home, in a kendra, a trine or the 11th37.430
if full and with a kind planet: favor from the top and new vehicles and clothes37.431
Mercury's
the Moon seen by Jupiter, in a kendra or trine from your rising sign, or exalted or at home37.493
a strong yoga, a partner, a child, clothes and vehicles37.494
Ketu's
the Moon exalted or at home, in a kendra, a trine or the 11th, or linked with the 2nd or 4th house37.557
the Moon in a kendra, the 11th or a trine, or exalted or at home, joined with the 9th and 10th rulers37.628
if instead it is full, with a kind planet and the realm's ruler: vehicles and children37.629
The one exception is the Moon's own season inside its own years. There the text asks for the Moon exalted or at home, or in a trine or the 11th, joined with the 9th and 10th rulers, and it leaves the kendras out37.90. When those conditions hold it reads devotion, the gain of a kingdom (today, a bigger role) and growing fame37.91. So a 10th-house Moon doesn't get its own season's boost from the house alone.
When a 10th-house Moon reads hard
The plainest hard verse for your Moon's years is short. A debilitated or waning Moon brings loss of money36.19. A waning Moon is one that was shrinking toward the new Moon when you were born, and the debilitated one belongs to Aquarius rising, where your 10th is Scorpio.
Four rising signs also put the Moon on chapter 16's hard list: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius. For those rising signs, the text counts the Moon as a hard planet for you, whatever house it sits in.
Aquarius rising gets all three marks at once: the house of the Moon's weakest direction, its weakest sign and the hard listing. If that's yours, look hard at what else is in your chart before taking this as the final word. No verse on this page turns a debilitated Moon in the 10th around, so we won't offer one.
How to tell which 10th-house Moon you have
Four questions about your own chart narrow it down:
Find your rising sign's row. Leo rising gives the exalted or moolatrikona Moon3.40; Aquarius rising gives the debilitated one3.39.
Was the Moon waxing or waning when you were born? Waning, it sits in the hard verse for its years36.19.
Is Jupiter looking at your Moon? In Saturn's years, the Moon's season asks for exactly that37.430.
Where is the ruler of your Moon's sign? In a trine from the Moon, with your rising sign's ruler in a kendra, the text reads good renown17.223.
No single answer decides it. Your Moon's sign, its phase, Jupiter and the rulers all have to be weighed together, which is the job of your free personal reading: it weighs your chart as a whole and writes you a page.
What these verses leave out
People search for which careers a 10th-house Moon suits, whether it means mood swings at work, whether it makes you famous, and what to do about it. The verses on this page don't name careers, don't describe moods, and give no remedy. The nearest they come to fame is the renown rule above, which needs the rulers in place.
They also don't cover the Moon passing through your 10th by transit, or the Moon in the 10th of the career chart (D10); our D10 guide says what that chart is read for. Our searching method, and the way we flag what the verses don't say, is set out in how AstroEngine reads the BPHS.
When your mood drops at work, who notices first, and what do they do?
Which job change in your life so far did you choose, and which one chose you?
Who above you has backed you, and what did they see?
If your mother had a hope for your work, how close is your life to it now?
Moon in the 10th house: the short answers
Is the Moon in the 10th house good in Vedic astrology?
It can be very good: the 10th is a kendra, one of the places the text lists for a strong Moon's good years36.13. It is also the Moon's weakest direction, so its sign, phase and company decide how good.
Is the Moon in the 10th good for career?
The 10th is the house of work and standing17.10, and a strong Moon's years read kingly status, today a rise in rank, and luck through the people above you36.16. The verses don't name a career.
Does the Moon in the 10th make you famous?
Only under conditions: the renown rule needs the ruler of the Moon's sign in a trine from it and your rising sign's ruler in a kendra17.223.
Which rising sign gives the strongest Moon in the 10th?
By sign, Leo: your Moon lands in Taurus, exalted in its first three degrees and moolatrikona after3.40. Chapter 16 doesn't name the Moon for Leo rising, though; it lists the Moon as kind for Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rising.
In directional strength, no: that score is measured from the 10th, which makes the 10th its low point42.13.
Is your Moon in the 10th?
Check your chart: is the Moon in your 10th house? Its sign, its phase on the day you were born and the rulers around it settle which of these Moons is yours.
The verses
From the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, with our plain-English reading. Where a verse is in the public-domain Bombay 1899 printing, the page link opens the scan, so you can read it there yourself.
[If the Moon is] in its own exaltation or its own sign, situated in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, conjoined with a benefic graha, and waxing (vriddhi) and endowed with strength —
From the 10th house (the house of the sky) one should examine kingship, a livelihood connected with the sky, honor, the father, foreign residence, and debt.
चतुरस्रं तुर्यरन्ध्रं कथयन्ति द्विजोत्तम । स्वस्थादुपचयक्षाणि त्रिषडायां वराणि हि ॥३६॥
The fourth and the eighth [ashta] they call chaturasra, O best of the twice-born. From one's own place, the third, sixth, eleventh and tenth are the upachaya houses, indeed excellent.
Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn — these are the bhava-karakas [of the twelve houses in order].
Mercury and Jupiter are strong in the east; the Sun and Mars in the south; Saturn in the west; and Venus and the Moon in the north — the directional strengths of the grahas.
Subtract the 4th house from the Sun and Mars, the 7th from Jupiter and Mercury, the lagna from Saturn, and the 10th (midheaven) from Venus and the Moon; if the remainder exceeds 6 signs, subtract from 12, convert to degrees, and divide by 3 — this gives the dig-bala (directional strength).
BPHS 3.38
अजो वृषो मृगः कन्या कुलीरझषतौलिकाः । सूर्यादीनां क्रमादेतास्तुङ्गसंज्ञाः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥३८॥
Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces, and Libra are declared, in order, to be the signs of exaltation (uchcha) of the Sun and the other grahas.
The precise degree of exaltation for each graha is given by a series of word-numerals; the sign of debilitation (nicha) is the seventh from the exaltation sign, at the same degree already stated (the exact numeric values encoded by the word-numerals in this verse are not fully certain without further cross-reference).
The Sun's moolatrikona spans the first twenty degrees of Leo, the remainder of Leo being its own house; the Moon is exalted in the first three degrees of Taurus, the rest of Taurus being its moolatrikona.
मन्दसौम्यसिताः पापाः शुभौ गुरुदिवाकरौ । न शुभं योगमात्रेण प्रभवेच्छनिजीवयोः ॥१३॥
For Mesha (Aries) lagna: Saturn, Mercury, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Sun are benefic. The mere combination of Saturn and Jupiter does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
For Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna: Jupiter, Venus, and the Moon are malefic; Saturn and the Sun are benefic. The one Raja-yoga-karaka is Saturn (रवेः सुतः, "son of the Sun") alone, directly.
For Mithuna (Gemini) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun are malefic; Venus alone is benefic. The combination of Saturn and Jupiter [here] gives results the same way as [described] for one born in Mesha lagna.
For Karka (Cancer) lagna: Venus and Mercury are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत, "son of the earth") alone becomes the Raja-yoga-karaka, directly.
BPHS 16.22
बुधशुक्रार्कजाः पापाः भौमेज्यार्काः शुभप्रदाः । प्रभवेद्योगमात्रेण न शुभं गुरुशुक्रयोः ॥२२॥
For Simha (Leo) lagna: Mercury, Venus, and Saturn (अर्कज, "son of the Sun") are malefic; Mars, Jupiter, and the Sun give auspicious results. The mere combination of Jupiter and Venus does not by itself produce an auspicious result.
For Tula (Libra) lagna: Jupiter, the Sun, and Mars are malefic; Saturn and Mercury are benefic. The Moon and its "son" (Mercury) become the karakas of Raja-yoga.
For Vrishchika (Scorpio) lagna: Mercury, Mars, and Venus are malefic; Jupiter and the Moon are benefic. The Sun and the Moon together become the Yoga-karakas.
For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna: Venus alone is malefic; Mercury and the Sun are benefic. Their combination (Sun and Mercury) is a Raja-yoga; the maraka is Saturn (भास्करसुत, "son of the Sun").
For Makara (Capricorn) lagna: Mars, Jupiter, and the Moon are malefic; Venus and Mercury (चन्द्रज, "son of the Moon") are benefic. Saturn is itself the maraka; Mars and the other [aforesaid malefics act as marakas] through association.
For Kumbha (Aquarius) lagna: Jupiter, the Moon, and Mars are malefic; Venus (दैत्यगुरु, "teacher of the demons") alone is benefic. Venus is the Raja-yoga-karaka, together with Mars and Jupiter.
For Meena (Pisces) lagna: Saturn, Venus, and the Sun are malefic; Mercury, Mars, and the Moon are benefic. Mars (महीसुत) and Jupiter together become the Yoga-karakas.
स्वर्क्षे तुङ्गे च मित्रर्क्षे कण्टके संस्थिता ग्रहाः । अन्योन्यकारका विप्र कर्मगास्तु विशेषतः ॥२२॥
Grahas standing in their own sign, in exaltation, or in a friend's sign, in a kendra — these, O brahmin, are mutual [yoga]karakas of one another; especially so if in the karma [10th] house.
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu (tamas), Jupiter (vakpati), Saturn, Mercury (manda-chandra-ja), Ketu, and Venus — these, in order, should be known as the dasha-lords.
[Their dasha periods, encoded as number-words, are, in order:] six, ten, seven, eighteen, sixteen, nineteen, seventeen, seven, and twenty years, respectively held [as the dasha-years for Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, and Venus].
Now the results of the Moon's dasha: an excellent dasha of the Moon brings the mother's welfare, [gain of] ponds and the like, fields, gardens, houses, seats/status, excellent brahmins, wealth, fame, and the comfort of a palanquin. A malefic dasha of the Moon brings loss of food, miserliness, endless loss of wealth, disease, loss of wisdom, disgrace, danger to the mother's life, disturbance, and severe cold-fever.
In the household, auspicious undertakings [occur]; the gain of a vehicle, an audience with the king; whatever undertaking and wealth-purpose is accomplished, [with] the household under Lakshmi's favorable glance.
मित्रप्रभुवशाद्भाग्यं राज्यलाभं महत्सुखम्। अश्वांदोल्यादिलाभं च श्वेतवस्त्रादिलाभकृत्।।१६।।
Through friends and superiors, good fortune, the gain of kingly status, and great happiness [occur]; the gain of horses, palanquins, and the like, and the gain of white garments and the like.
सूर्यस्थे लग्नात्केन्द्रत्रिकोणगे चन्द्रे विवाहं शुभकार्यं च धनधान्यसमृद्धिकृत्।।२१।।
In Sun's dasha, when the Moon is in a kendra or trikona from the lagna, its antardasha brings marriage, auspicious undertakings, and abundance of wealth and grain.

There is increase of house and land, of cattle, vehicles, and property; when exalted or in its own sign, there is the happiness of a wife and the gain of wealth.
In Mars's mahadasha, Moon's antardasha: when the Moon is in its own exaltation, own sign, or a kendra, joined with the lords of the 9th, 4th, 10th, or the lagna —
— it produces a vast kingdom together with fragrances, garlands, and garments; there is construction of tanks, gateways, and the like, and accumulation of merit and righteousness.

केतोरन्तर्गते चन्द्रे स्वोच्चे स्वक्षेत्रराशिगे। केन्द्रत्रिकोणलाभे वा धने सुखसमन्विते।।२३।।
In Ketu's mahadasha, Moon's antardasha: when the Moon is in its own exaltation or own sign, or in a kendra, trikona, or the 11th, or joined with the 2nd or 4th house —
In Venus's mahadasha, Moon's antardasha: when the Moon is in a kendra, the 11th, or a trikona, or in its own exaltation or own sign, joined with the lords of the 9th and 10th —
— or the Moon is full, joined with a benefic and the ruler of the kingdom, in its antardasha there is great happiness through abundance of vehicles and offspring.
In Moon's mahadasha, Moon's own antardasha: when the Moon is in its own exaltation or own sign, or in a trikona or the 11th, joined with the lords of the 9th and 10th, its antardasha gives abundance of cattle, horses, and garments.
There is devotion to deities and guru, and the recitation of sacred verses; gain of kingdom, great happiness, and increase of fame bringing happiness.
