Saturn is the planet Vedic astrology calls lazy: among the planet portraits in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, a centuries-old Sanskrit text, only Saturn's uses the word3.18. That line describes the planet, though, and says nothing about what causes your laziness, and the same book reads Saturn's own years as "great enthusiasm" when it stands well36.52.
So your Saturn is one clue among many. What shares its house, your Moon and the years you're in now can each point another way, and your free personal reading writes one page about you from all of that together.
What the text says: Saturn is the one it calls lazy
Say the alarm has gone off twice, the list is written, and you're still lying there wondering what's wrong with you. If you came here looking for the planet to blame, here is what the source really has, and if the terms are new, our Vedic astrology basics start from zero. From here down to the section marked as ours, every claim about the book carries its verse.
Parashara draws a quick portrait of each planet, one after another. We laid them side by side:
Planet | How its portrait describes it |
|---|---|
Sun | Pure, glorious, well proportioned3.12 |
Moon | Wise, sweet-spoken, restless, amorous3.13 |
Mars | Irascible, with a restless, well-formed body3.14 |
Mercury | Eloquent, precise, very fond of humor3.15 |
Jupiter | Intelligent, learned in all the shastras3.16 |
Venus | Content, fine-eyed, a poet3.17 |
Saturn | Lean and long-bodied, lazy, lame, coarse-haired3.18 |
Rahu | Fearsome, intelligent, smoke-colored3.19 |
The Sanskrit word on Saturn is alasa, the everyday word for idle or slow to act.
Read that row carefully, because it's easy to take it further than it goes. It paints the planet. It doesn't say that a person with a strong Saturn, or a weak one, or Saturn in any given sign, turns out lazy. No line in the portraits makes that jump.
Why would the planet that does the work be the lazy one?
Picture the person at your job who is never first in the door and never leaves anything half done. If you know Saturn from Western astrology, you probably know it as the strict teacher, the planet of discipline. Parashara's version has an odd detail you can hold next to that.
He sets the planets up as a royal court. The Sun and Moon are the kings, Mars the commander, Mercury the prince, and Jupiter and Venus the ministers3.3. Saturn is the servant, with Rahu and Ketu as the army3.4. So the lazy one in the portraits is also the one with the chores. Today that can read as someone slow to begin who still ends up carrying the load, though that's our reading of two lines put together, and the verses don't draw it themselves.
Then come Saturn's years, its long stretch in your timeline (our guide to Saturn's years walks through them). There are several ways into good ones. Saturn exalted, in its own or a friend's sign, or in the 9th house are among them36.45, and so is Saturn in the 3rd or 11th. Those years are read as royal honor, good fame, gain of wealth and delight in learned talk36.46.
These lines are the text's reading, for reflection, and they forecast neither your bank balance nor your health. If you've felt flat or drained for weeks, a doctor is the person to ask, and no planet is a reason to skip that talk or a talk with someone you trust.
There's a second way in that's easier to check. Saturn in Pisces or Sagittarius counts, and so does Saturn in a pillar house (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th), the 5th, the 9th or the 11th36.51. Those years read a kingdom gained, elephants, horses and clothes in plenty, and the phrase we quoted at the top, great enthusiasm36.52.
The Sanskrit there is mahotsaha, about as far from alasa as a word gets. Our page on whether Saturn is bad gives the full lists of conditions and the hard side of those same years.
Who else does the old book call lazy?
Some people are quick in a crisis and useless on a quiet Tuesday. That split is close to what two of these lines describe.
We searched all 4,197 verses we hold, in English and in Sanskrit, for the words behind lazy and indolent (alasa, alasya). Set aside the sluggish seasons in the next section, and the word lands on a person in only five more places.
Start with Gulika in the 12th. Gulika isn't a body you can see in the sky. The day is cut into portions, and Saturn's portion is the one called Gulika4.2. The night is portioned as well, and there too it belongs to Saturn4.3.
If Gulika stands in your 12th house, the reading is hard: given to base deeds, sinful, deformed, unfortunate, lazy, fond of low company10.gulika-12. So this use of the word leads back to Saturn as well. We found no verse that softens this one. Today it can look like a long habit of hiding out, in company that asks little of you, and the rest of your chart still gets its say.
Next come two rare patterns, which ask where all the planets sit together. All of them inside the 7th through 10th houses is called Shakti19.13. It reads without wealth, unsuccessful, sorrowful, base and indolent, yet skilled in the strategy of battle, steady and fortunate19.33.
All of them gathered into just three houses is called Shula19.16. That one reads sharp yet indolent, devoid of wealth and violent, among other things, yet greatly heroic and winning fame in battle19.46. Today that can be the person who idles for months and comes alive when something real is at stake.
Then a state of the Sun. The text gives each planet twelve activities26.44, worked out by a long sum using where it sits among the lunar mansions26.45, the time of day and your rising sign26.46, and even the first letter of your name26.47.
When the Sun lands in the departing state, the reading is living often abroad, beset by sorrow, ever indolent, without intellect or wealth, fearful and prone to anger26.57. Today that can be someone far from home, short on drive and short on patience. It's a sum nobody does by hand, so treat it as one more thing the book noticed.
The last, a pattern called Veshi, is gentle: graceful yet indolent in speech20.53. That describes an unhurried way of talking.
Is it you, or the years you're in?
There's a difference between "I've always been like this" and "I used to get up at six, and for the last year I can't." The lines about people above sit closer to the first. The planets' years have a good deal to say about the second, and they use a body word, deha: bodily lethargy, a sluggish body, for a stretch of time.
About twenty lines read this way, each tied to one planet's years or to a season inside them, and each with its own conditions. Here are the ones that come with the clearest test:
Years | Season | The condition | What it reads |
|---|---|---|---|
Rahu | Mars | Mars rules your 2nd or 7th | Bodily lethargy and great fear; a gift of a bullock and a cow37.312 |
Jupiter | Mars | Mars rules your 2nd or 7th | Bodily sluggishness and mental distress; a gift of a bullock37.382 |
Saturn | Moon | The Moon rules your 2nd or 7th | Bodily lethargy; a fire offering of sesame37.440 |
Venus | Rahu | Rahu stands in your 2nd or 7th | Bodily lethargy; recitation of a mantra37.652 |
Saturn's own season shows up too. In Venus's years, with Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th from your rising sign or from Venus, the season reads bodily lethargy and spending above your income37.663.
Among these lines, only the Moon's is about sleep. In Saturn's years, in the Moon's season, a Moon that is weak in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Saturn37.438 reads too much sleep, disease and lethargy, loss of position yet also some happiness, more enemies and conflict, and a parting from someone dear37.439. A year of oversleeping has many ordinary causes, and a doctor can look at those.
And then the same planet can turn around inside one season. In Ketu's years, Saturn's season reads lethargy and mental loss when Saturn is in the 8th or 12th sign37.594. Among the ways out, put it instead in Pisces, Libra, its own sign, a pillar house, a 5th or 9th, the 11th or the 3rd, with a kind planet looking at it, and that season reads every undertaking accomplished and gain of wealth37.595.
Your Moon's years have their own version as well. A weak Moon joined with harsh planets (the malefics) reads bodily lethargy, an afflicted mind, trouble from servants, loss of wealth and harm from your mother's side36.20. If you don't know which years you're in, our guide to your mahadasha and its seasons shows how they're laid out.
Does a weak Mars, Rahu or a weak 3rd house make you lazy?
You may have come here with one of these in mind, since all three get named when people talk about low drive.
Mars is a natural guess. It governs courage and vitality3.1, and it stands for anger and valor17.18. Venus, for what it's worth, gives vigor and vitality too3.2. So a person short on drive might well look at those two first. But we found no verse saying a weak Mars makes you lazy. Mars's lethargy lines mostly look like the two rows above, where it rules your 2nd or 7th during a season.
Rahu's portrait doesn't use the word, as the table at the top shows. Rahu's clearest lethargy line is the Venus-years row above, for one season, in two houses.
The 3rd house is where valor gets examined17.3, so a weak 3rd is a fair place to ask about effort. No single verse says a weak 3rd means laziness.
The nearest thing to a direct line is the ruler of your 3rd in your 2nd: stout, undertaking little and unhappy, among other things18.20. With that ruler at home in the 3rd, the reading flips to valorous, wealthy and greatly delighted18.21.
Which Saturn is yours? Four things to check
You can test most of this yourself on a free Vedic chart. Your Saturn may sit in a different sign than it does in a Western one, because the sidereal and tropical zodiacs count from different points.
- Saturn's sign. Its auspicious strength is full in exaltation, full less a quarter in its root sign, half in its own and a quarter in a friend's3.51. In a neutral's sign it's an eighth, and it's void in its sign of fall, when combust or in an enemy's sign3.52. Our table of exalted and debilitated planets and our list of planet friends and enemies have the signs.
- Gulika. Many Vedic chart tools mark it. Is it in your 12th?
- The spread. Count the houses holding the seven planets from the Sun through Saturn, which is how we read these patterns, leaving Rahu and Ketu out. Three, or all seven in the 7th through 10th, is one of the two rare patterns above. Most charts are neither.
- The years. Which planet's years and season are you in, and does a row in that table match? It's a sample of about twenty lines, and if "rules your 2nd" is new, our guide to house lords explains it. If yes, the book reads this as a stretch of time.
Those four only cover this one question, and a chart can answer them one way while the rest of it pulls another. Your free personal reading leaves the checklist behind and writes about the whole of you.
A practical thought from us
This part is ours, and the text gives no such advice. We think the first useful step is on paper. For two weeks, note each time you stall and which kind it was: couldn't start, started and drifted, or your body simply wouldn't. Those three call for different things, and the last one goes to a doctor, before any chart.
If it's the first kind, borrow the picture of the court. A servant works from a short list at a set hour, so give your slow part one small job at the same time each day, and judge it by whether it got done.
Questions to sit with
- When did you last move fast without trying, and what was at stake?
- Has this slowness always been there, or did it arrive at a particular time in your life?
- Who first called you lazy, and were they watching the part of your life you cared about?
- If your slowness had a job in your life, what is it good at?
Laziness and your chart: quick answers
Which planet is responsible for laziness?
The word lands on Saturn: its portrait is the only one that calls a planet lazy3.18.
Which planet makes you lazy, then?
No verse says any single planet does this to you. The word is on Saturn's description. The lines about people depend on conditions, such as Gulika in the 12th or the seasons in the table.
Which planet is responsible for lethargy?
Several, for a time. The lethargy lines run through many planets' years, each with a condition, so the season matters more than the name of the planet.
What about Jupiter, a depleted Sun, or a weak 6th or 11th?
None of them turned up in our search as a person's laziness, apart from the Sun's departing state above.
What about Neptune?
We searched the book for Neptune, Uranus and Pluto and found no mention of them, so it has nothing to say on that.
Is there an astrology remedy for laziness?
For laziness as a trait, we found none. The seasonal lines close with a gift or a recitation, as you saw in the table. We list them because the verses do, and we aren't recommending them.
Does a lazy Saturn mean I'm stuck like this?
Those same years can read great enthusiasm when Saturn stands well, so even in this book the planet goes both ways.
